Matchday Musings: Sunderland show some very early promise (Roker Report)

The noon kick-off threw a lot of people out of kilter, but the Lads were still up for it as they battled for a point.

The players were putting the graft in and the likes of Patterson and Alex Pritchard had started running down the clock to good effect, so whilst it was disappointing to concede as late as we did, we won’t see finishes like that every game. I hope to see more of it where appropriate, and whilst we didn’t have quite enough for the win I think there was enough to be positive about; there was a slight sense of disappointment at full time but the otherwise appreciative response from the crowd would seem to back that up too. There was just one debutant in the side against Coventry City, and despite playing against one of the better sides in the division nobody looked out of place. The only other real clear cut chance that I recall was of our own doing, and as the minutes passed it was looking like we could hold on. The visitors did come into it more as the half wore on though, and with the Lads unable to keep hold of the ball following the break Mark Robins’ side began dictating play. One of my mates meanwhile, who lives outside of the city, had to tape the Josh Kelly fight on Saturday night as he’d have been unable otherwise to get up in time for his transport.

Clarke was not favourite to win the ball when Lynden Gooch hung a cross towards the far post on 12 minutes. Among them is scorer Clarke, signed from Tottenham in the summer after a loan spell. That is why the likes of Fulham are interested in the 24-year-old, who is valued at £10million. You do not come up against Sweden internationals such as Viktor Gyokeres in League One and he was the reason Coventry left with a share of the points. This, then, was more to his liking — a gritty draw against a very decent Coventry side to open their first season back in the second tier. The last time that Sunderland were in the Championship the best thing they produced was a Netflix documentary.

Hot Takes! Sunderland showed flashes of real promise against ... (Roker Report)

Despite conceding a late equaliser in our first Championship game for four years, this was a very encouraging start for Alex Neil's side!

Beyond any doubt, we have the core of a competitive Championship side, and additional signings made between now and the window will only enhance that. Additions are certainly needed, and despite Corry Evans not exactly being outmuscled in this game, a dominating central midfielder should be high on the agenda. Teams at this level will punish slackness, and we need to be aware of that at all times. After eighty minutes, hope was growing that an opening-day victory was on the cards, but it wasn’t to be, as Viktor Gyökeres curled home a delicious effort from the edge of the box after slack marking. Patterson might be another player over whom question marks may be hanging, but displays like this will do his cause and his confidence the power of good. Neil is both a realist and an optimist, as we have heard during the past week.

While it was an afternoon that ended in frustration for Sunderland, supporters will be delighted to be back in the Championship and will no doubt be hoping that their blockbuster home support can help them to retain their second tier status over the course of the campaign. The second half saw Elliot Embleton go close for Sunderland as he sent his effort narrowly over the bar, while Coventry also posed a real threat with Matty Godden who sent a decent effort wide of the mark. Sunderland dominated for the duration of the first half and kept the Sky Blues at bay, giving them the advantage going in at the break.
