Globally, 3 in 5 citizens say abortion should be legal in all or most ... (Ipsos Research)

The survey of 20,523 adults under the age of 75 was conducted on Ipsos' Global Advisor online platform between June 24 and July 8, 2022. Detailed findings.

- Those who say abortion should be legal for any woman in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy outnumber those who say it should be illegal by a global average of 11 points (45% vs. Globally – and in many countries -- the percentage of adults surveyed in 2022 who say abortion should be legal if the pregnancy is the result of a rape is higher than the combined percentage of those who said in 2021 that it should be permitted “whenever a woman decides she wants one” or “in certain circumstances, such as when a woman has been raped.” It is up five points on average globally, and by at least seven points in Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Turkey, and the United States. The only country where it is lower (by five points) is India. The 10 countries where those who say it should be illegal outnumber those who say it should be legal are Argentina, Chile, Colombia, India, South Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, Peru, South Africa, and Turkey. On average, globally, support for the legal status of abortion in all or most cases is somewhat higher among women than it is among men, among those aged 50-74 than among those under 50, and among those with a university-level education than those without. Those who say it should be legal outnumber those who say it shouldn’t in 22 countries – nowhere more than in Sweden, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Opposition prevails in only 4 countries – Peru, India, Malaysia, and Colombia. Views about whether abortion should be legal vary depending on the circumstances.

This week's Ipsos Core Political has President Biden with a 38% approval rating, and 69% of Americans say things in this country are off on the wrong track.

The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 5.7 percentage points for Democrats, ± 6.4 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 10.3 percentage points for independents. All partisans are in agreement that President Biden should prioritize the economy, with Republicans (66%) and independents (64%) most likely to say so. For Democrats, a similar order appears: the economy (26%), then the environment (15%), and then the healthcare system (12%). For Republicans, it is the economy (39%), then immigration (11%), and then crime or corruption (9%). Finally, 42% of independents say the economy is most important, followed by a two-way tie between the healthcare system (7%) and terrorism/extremism (7%), and rounded out with the environment (6%) in third place. Forty-nine percent of Americans approve of the work Biden has been doing on COVID-19, declining by five points since this time last year (54% on August 12, 2021). On the environment, his approval has dropped to 41% from 49% last year.
