Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest live score, updates, highlights ... (Sporting News AU)

The emotions will be running high at St. James' Park where Nottingham Forest will make their return to the Premier League after 23 years in a difficult road ...

26th min.: Some chaos in and around the Forest box that ends with a shot from Bruno Guimaraes that's off the mark. The Frenchman gets the ball on that left wing and is targeting Forest captain Worrall. This time his slicing run ends in a shot on goal that Dean Henderson stops. 31st min.: Chance Newcastle! Big Joelinton pushes into the attack and he rips two shots in consecutive minutes with one coming close to Forest's left post. 58th min.: Goal Newcastle! After Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin were misfiring in the box, Fabian Schar collects a clearance and blasts it into the top right corner. The Brazilian and Almiron are connecting well. The one thing that should be concerning to Eddie Howe is the decision-making and lack of goal-scoring instincts from his attackers in the final third. Saint-Maximin and Almiron are always busy on the flanks, and they want to make things happen on the ball. There came a point when Cooper didn't need all three of them on the field and would have been better suited adding a central midfielder. His vision, decision-making, and feel for the game are world-class. Jesse Lingard had a quiet debut for his new club, while record signing Taiwo Awoniyi and newcomer Orel Mangala came off the bench, but could not provide much of a spark. And they didn't even need star center-back signing Sven Botman, who only came on in the the final minute. Two moments of superb class by Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson produced the decisive goals in the second half.

ST JAMES' PARK — Fabian Schar's howitzer of an opening goal might have arrived like a bolt from the blue but Newcastle's impressive performance on the opening ...

Forest’s riposte was a Lingard effort that was well blocked by Schar but it wasn’t enough to spoil an almost perfect day for the home side. Allan Saint-Maximin was not able to head past Dean Henderson. Newcastle, of course, feel they are still a couple of attacking players short and as they struggled to break down Forest for 45 minutes you could understand that. For Nottingham Forest, this was a harsh lesson to absorb on the first day of the season. Before the game the supporters unveiled a banner that reflected a “New Day, a New Dawn” at the club. Some of his passing and vision with the ball at his feet was breath-taking – with a World Cup to come in a few months, he could enjoy a special campaign.

Forest, playing in the top flight after an absence of 23 years, was pegged back for most of the game as Newcastle created a slew of chances in the first half. The second came in the 78th when Allan Saint-Maximin slid the ball into Joelinton’s run and when he crossed low, Wilson flicked expertly across the helpless Henderson to find the back of the net. But it took until the 58th to break the deadlock, when Schar drove forward toward the right edge of the penalty area and blasted the ball into the top of the net.

Almironón manned the right chalk, moved to the AMF, dropped to the CMF, and didn’t bit for a second. The system works and did so already last season in the Magpies' run to secure their Premier League status for at least another year. Howe used him in the forward line last season, then found a gem when deploying him in the middle of the pitch, and an even better piece of diamond when handing him the do-it-all role later in the year. Pope was barely tested in Newcastle’s goal and Joe Willock looked more than good starting in place of expected-XIer Sean Longstaff. Give me those two all day over the Notts duo, all day, every day. That can’t be said of the good old times when, as recently as in the summer of 2019, Newcastle went on to sign a Brazilian bangscorer by the name of Joelinton. On a six-year deal. Clubs are quoting every living organism part of their organization at astronomical values to take advantage of Newcastle’s full bags—reasonable—but the Men In Black have kept a leveled head and operating impeccably so far.

Discussing Saint-Maximin’s future at NUFC, Jones told Give Me Sport: “The information I’ve had is that all summer, Newcastle have been looking for a wide forward as well as a centre forward. That means that the long-term future for Saint-Maximin at Newcastle is probably bleak. Journalist Dean Jones certainly seems to think Saint-Maximin doesn’t have much of a future at St James’ Park, as he insists Newcastle have been working on replacing him this summer.

Fabian Schar opened the scoring for Newcastle with a fabulous goal in an eventual 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Swiss defender obviously has taken a liking to that particular zone on the field. Not only is it wildly impressive considering Schar is a central defender, it’s insane to see how the two goals are essentially identical. A comparison video has put Schar’s strike against Forest side by side with a goal he bagged against Burnley in February 2019.
