Norwich frustrated again as Wigan hold out for Championship draw (The Guardian)

1. Tim Krul · 2. Maximillian Aarons · 4. Andrew Omobamidele · 6. Ben Gibson · 30. Dimitrios Giannoulis · 26. Marcelino Nunez · 19. Jacob Sorensen · 23. Kenny McLean.

With Wigan defending stoutly, Norwich had to work hard for another opening and it was not until the 82nd minute that they went close again. Norwich were on the front foot from the start and maintained their dominance for the majority of the opening period, even after going behind. A beautiful chipped pass from the Chilean Marcelino Núñez then put Milot Rashica in but his lob over Ben Amos lacked power and was cleared. And after seeing defender Dimitris Giannoulis leave the pitch with what looked like serious injury to his right ankle, Dean Smith’s team deservedly got back on level terms in the 62nd minute. Naylor got the ball but Smith felt the challenge was overzealous. Max Aarons had cancelled out James McClean’s opener and was taken out by a strong challenge from Tom Naylor as he went looking for his second goal of the game.

Norwich City 1-1 Wigan Athletic: Aarons rescues point for Canaries (VAVEL.com)

Despite dominating much of the match, Norwich were forced to settle for a point against a scrappy Wigan side.

Will Keane cut out Gibson's pass and, after finding a gap in the defence, fed an unmarked McLean, who slotted past Krul to make it 1-0. Sam McCallum came on in his place. Aarons was taken off in the first minute of stoppage time, replaced by Sara, who was making his debut for Norwich. The Canaries saw out ten minutes of stoppage time to earn a point. He volleyed the subsequent rebound high and wide. Rashica then took advantage of a mistake by the Latics and was one-on-one with Amos, but like Kerr in the first half, he beat the 'keeper, but not the goal. Aarons was the next to try his luck as at the quarter-hour mark, he found space on the edge of the box and although he beat goalkeeper Ben Amos, his shot flashed wide of the goal.

So, whilst one points from two games is poor, there were at least signs of improvement from the poor display in Wales last week. They created plenty of chances early on and will feel they should’ve had a penalty to get the three points as well. Whilst Max Aarons equalised, and the hosts felt a few key decisions went against them, they had to settle for a point as they wait for a first Championship win.
