"Say what you want, I just think it's a bummer that those were his final moments. We had one recently that hit me hard, I just wish it could have ended differently." Although dogs bring so much to our lives, the prospect of having to say goodbye to them one day is enough to put people off welcoming them into their homes. That was one I definitely understood why the owner couldn't be there.

Many endure painful physical mutilations such as ear-cropping, an illegal process that involves removing part of a dog's ears to prevent another dog from grabbing them in a fight, thereby losing the fight. In India, inciting dogs to fight is illegal under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960. Yet organised dogfights are prevalent in Punjab, Haryana, other parts of north India, and Rajasthan, making pitbull–type dogs used in these fights the most abused dog breeds. They are commonly bred to be used in illegal fighting or kept on heavy chains as attack dogs, resulting in a lifetime of suffering. Healthier foods exist but they are way harder to adopt (they require thawing, scooping, prep work, extra time, and they’re more expensive). Even with the “healthier” options that we are marketed, it’s not clear whether the food actually results in better health outcomes. It was clear that the pet industry had a massive problem and I set out to fix it. Eventually we started evaluating his nutrition and once I changed his diet to raw food, the seizures stopped and I watched his health improve within about 30 days.

Paws & Pints, a canine retreat with a park, vet and bar in Des ... (desmoinesregister.com)

Paws & Pints, a dog retreat that combines a dog park and canine services with a human bar, is set to open in Des Moines in August.

The bar plans to serve cocktails and 20 craft beers on tap, with a small menu for humans and dogs on the way. Paws & Pints is one of the first businesses in the Des Moines area to combine multiple dog-related services with a human bar and social venue under one roof. "From our mentors and from just being dog owners for as long as we have, we knew exactly what experience we wanted to give our fellow dog owners," Kyle said. The couple's beloved Bernese mountain dog Porter did not live to see Paws & Pints' opening, but the Caseys have made new additions to their family. The Caseys believe that Paws & Pints fills a need for dog owners who otherwise crisscross the metro for various services for their pets. "The feedback's been good," Kyle said. It's not easy pulling all this off at one time." "We've had founding members asking for months when they could start getting appointments booked." "Capital raising is not easy, especially doing it through a worldwide pandemic." And similarly, spending on pets trended upward during the pandemic as more households adopted pets that did not own animals previously. After 16 years of it, I had to do something. "I kind of jokingly say that the love for our beloved (dog) Porter changed the trajectory of our lives," Kyle said.

In Her Own Words: Katie Spies turns dog food recipe into business ... (The Business Journals)

What does a woman with engineering degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard do in her spare time? Adopt a dog with seizures, cure him with her own recipe ...

With my background in product design, we spent 3.5 years in R&D to optimize not only the nutrition and ingredient quality with our team of veterinary nutritionists, but also to design our products the way we would design a new hardware device or an app or a piece of furniture – intentionally so that every thoughtful detail makes sense for the end user (the human and the dog). At Maev, we set out to build a brand rooted in transparency and trust, with products that lower the barrier to feeding healthier. That’s where a raw diet, the least processed and most nutrient-available diet for pets, typically stands out: not only is it traditionally seen as picky-eater-proof, but most dog owners report visible improvements in their dogs health within a month of switching to raw. Healthier foods exist but they are way harder to adopt (they require thawing, scooping, prep work, extra time, and they’re more expensive). Even with the “healthier” options that we are marketed, it’s not clear whether the food actually results in better health outcomes. It's no stray matter as dog feeders face constant harassment (Hindustan Times)

We go like criminals in the middle of the night and look for places where there are no CCTVs installed to feed the dogs, just to avoid all this hassle,” said Shalini Dixit, a dog feeder in Noida. In the year 2021, a dog feeder along with his wife, daughter and dog were surrounded by a mob of 250-300 people. The hostility and threats often force these caregivers to go out in the middle of the night to feed the strays, just to avoid confrontation. The key to a successful ABC program is the regular feeding. “ We try to feed dogs in areas that have minimum movement of people. “A dog feeder in my society was filmed feeding these dogs and she was even carrying her baby. There is a designated body by the government of India — AWBI (Animal Welfare Board of India). You need to consult them, should you have to take any action on animals. The only authority in my case that is allowed to issue challans is the Noida authority,” added Chakravarty. In many societies, RWAs (residents’ welfare association) and AOAs have issued a guideline that people can make videos and take pictures of people who are feeding stray dogs. What you need to do is follow the rule of the land. In another instance, one of many, video of a stray dog feeder being abused and heckled in Ghaziabad, went viral. Secondly, there is no way that you can promulgate guidelines that go against the court rulings, Delhi High Court rulings and the Constitution of India, which enshrines that feeding of stray animals is a fundamental duty.

Why your dog is barking and how to stop it (The Standard)

A jumping dog can be annoying and even dangerous. It is annoying when a dog has inappropriate urination and defecation habits. When you teach your dog that begging is permitted, you are sending the wrong message. One of the most important things you can do is to make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise so it can wear off energy and be stimulated in that way rather than turning to chewing. Dedication and attention to detail can go a long way to stop a dog from barking. Before you can correct excessive barking, determine why your dog is vocalising in the first place.

Jennifer's dog training advice - How do I get my dog to stop barking ... (The Chiswick Calendar)

Jennifer Billot, MSc CPDT-KA is a professional dog trainer and the founder and owner of Bone Ball Bark, a force-free dog training company based in Chiswick.

Now you are ready to try this when your dog hears someone at the door and goes to bark. If you need any in-person or virtual help with your dog barking at the door, please get in touch. A great way of helping your dog stop barking at the doorbell specifically, is to teach them that the sound is nothing to react to. Wait for your dog to eat all of them, then repeat a couple more times. Repeat this many times over a period of days, moving varying distances away from the mat. Where the association used to be doorbell=run to door and bark, we now have doorbell=go to bed for something amazing. Be ready to treat as soon as your dog hears the sound. Continuous alert barking is also stressful and anxiety producing for the dog and I don’t want that. Turn the volume on your phone down as low as it goes. I use the rain noise setting with my dog, Griffin, when he is left alone to make sure he can rest soundly and not necessarily hear neighbours and deliveries. It is mostly because we now live in built up and populated areas that we see barking as a nuisance, unnecessary and something to stop. They might now be scared by the noise of the bell, or of strange figures wearing masks appearing in the doorway.

Our Review of the Furbo 360º Dog Camera (theSkimm)

Welcome to Skimm Tested, where we put products to the test and then give 'em a report card. (Check out all of our tried and tested faves here.) ...

One of the best features of this camera, in our humble opinions, is the ability to toss treats to your pet via the app. Setup. As long as you have a solid Wi-Fi connection, setting up the camera is quick and easy. You can also talk to your pets in real time by pressing a microphone icon on the app. We tested that feature while we were in the room with the camera and found the sound to be crisp and come through with almost no lag. Price. At $210 (currently on sale for$189), the Furbo 360º Dog Camera isn’t exactly cheap — though we have noticed that Furbo cameras are frequently on sale, as this one is now. While the treat-tossing function is an incredibly cool one, treats must be less than 0.75 inches in diameter, and should be dry, firm, and round for best toss results. Unlike the previous Furbo model, this device rotates on its base to provide a 360-degree view (hence its name), which you can control via arrows on the app to scan the room in either direction. Bonus: You can choose from either a default squeaky-toy sound to activate when a treat is tossed, or you can record your own sound if you want to personalize it. We found this function to work smoothly and quickly, allowing us a full view of the room. The camera also has an automatic night-vision feature, which provides a clear view of the room in low lighting; the device will determine whether color or black and white will give you the crispest image. And when you’re using the app, you can zoom in 4x as well as take photos or videos in real time. It streams in color, and you can choose from 360p, 720p, and 1080p resolutions — though higher ones may affect streaming quality depending on your Wi-Fi. We consistently kept the camera at 720p and found it to be quite crisp, but if you’ve got a stronger connection, the 1080p resolution is impressive.
