S.A. school district makes Election Day a holiday after shooting (San Antonio Express-News)

After the May 24 Uvalde shooting at Robb Elementary School, many schools have indicated they don't want voters on campus on Election Day.

The deadline for local entities to call an election is Aug. 22. Under state law, the county could have fewer than 160 sites open on Nov. 8. The county provided 258 Election Day voting sites for the May 24 primary runoff, but it may eliminate low-performing sites that traditionally draw no more than 50 voters. In the past, the county used schools for nearly 69 percent of Election Day polling sites. Callanen said she’s planning for up to 45 sites countywide that will be in operation for early voting from Oct. 24 to Nov. 4. In the last four years, about 108,000 new voters have registered.

The attorney general’s election could be one of the fiercest and most expensive Minnesota has seen, with Republicans sensing opportunity around an office they haven’t held in 50 years. Key primaries to watch include the Republican contest for attorney general and DFL primaries against congressional incumbents Betty McCollum and Ilhan Omar. In southern Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District, Republican Brad Finstad and DFLer Jeff Ettinger are vying to fill the final few months of Hagedorn’s term. The only statewide primary race with much intrigue is for attorney general. Down the ballot were key local races, including two in the most populous Hennepin County. Voters there were chopping lists of candidates down to two for the open county attorney and county sheriff races that will be decided in November. House District 54A in Shakopee, which was a rematch between Republican state Rep. Erik Mortensen and former GOP state Rep. Bob Loonan. House District 50B in the Bloomington area where two DFL incumbents were facing off — Reps. Andrew Carlson and Steve Elkins. Senate District 54 in the Prior Lake area between Republican Sen. Eric Pratt and endorsed candidate Natalie Barnes. Senate District 56 on the DFL side between endorsed candidate Justin Emmerich and former state Rep. Erin Maye Quade. Senate District 10 in central Minnesota, an open seat where former legislators Jim Newberger and Steve Wenzel were among those vying for the GOP nod. Finstad, a farmer and former state legislator, is also facing a challenge from Republican state Rep. Jeremy Munson to be the nominee for the next two-year term; Ettinger was favored on the DFL side, although he also has a pair of challengers from within the party. Turnout overall for the August primary could struggle to match 2018 and 2020 — around 22 percent of eligible voters in each of those — due to a lack of competitive races high on the ballot.

When Can We Expect Primary Election Results? (The New York Times)

Most of the attention on Tuesday will be focused on Wisconsin, a battleground state where Republican voters are deciding who will challenge Gov.

Election officials everywhere would like to remind us that all the results we get Tuesday night are unofficial. It is up to local officials to decide whether to start counting mail ballots before or after in-person voting ends. In November 2020, more than 45 percent of the vote was uncounted by midnight on election night. Mail ballots could have a significant impact in tight races, like the Democratic primary for the state’s only House seat, and it could be late into Tuesday night before preliminary results are available in that race. And many of the state’s major cities, including Milwaukee and Green Bay, do not publish any results from ballots cast during early, in-person voting and absentee ballots until all are counted, according to Riley Vetterkind, the Wisconsin Elections Commission’s public information officer. Mail voting is up over previous midterm elections, according to Eric Covey, the chief of staff for Vermont’s secretary of state. In both Vermont and Connecticut, ballot counting is handled by towns, rather than counties. Polls close in Connecticut at 8 p.m. Eastern time. Election officials in Wisconsin could not start processing absentee ballots until polls opened on Tuesday morning. Mr. Trump endorsed Mr. Michels, a construction magnate who has said he would consider decertifying the 2020 results — something that cannot legally be done. Polls close in Wisconsin at 9 p.m. Eastern time. But that is not a guarantee.

Ward 3 head election judge Heather Bregel confirmed there were a higher than normal spoiled ballots. • Voters were able to find their polling place without a problem, but the ballot was confusing for some as it included primary voting and special election voting. • On the primary side of the ballot, voters needed to select candidates in a single party, but some voters accidentally voted in multiple parties resulting in spoiled ballots. In most spoiled ballot cases, the voter realized the mistake and was able to request a new ballot. Ward 3 saw the highest early voter turnout. Other times the voting machine would catch the error if the ballot was filled out improperly.

Newly released messages between border force and home affairs public servants shed light on 'unprecedented' haste to make asylum boat interception public.

Phrases added to later drafts included: “The Australian government’s policy remains unchanged. But the statement did not appear immediately, prompting a flurry of concerned texts from the minister’s office, including “is it live?? At 1.06pm on election day, Morrison was asked about “reports” of an illegal asylum boat arrival, which he confirmed, adding: “I’ve been here to stop this boat. Morrison declined to take follow-up questions about whether the announcement breached protocols not to discuss on-water matters. The public servant replied: “It was unprecedented. Normally the minister announces it after the [illegal maritime arrivals] have touched down/been returned.
