Republicans in Wisconsin will pick their gubernatorial candidate Tuesday night, setting up one of the most important and closely contested general elections ...
And two reach seats for Republicans in Connecticut — to challenge Democratic Reps. Jahana Hayes and Joe Courtney — have no-drama, unopposed primaries Tuesday as well. She was able to beat back a well-funded primary challenger by 20 points in 2020. Trump also targeted Wisconsin state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, backing a primary challenger running against one of the most influential state legislative leaders in the country. Trump also squared off with the local GOP in Connecticut’s Senate race — and won. Meanwhile, Vermont Democrats are getting ready to send a woman to Congress for the first time in state history. Michels will face Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in November, in what is expected to be a highly competitive governor race in the battleground state. Last week, Kansas voters overwhelmingly rejected a state constitutional amendment that would have cleared the way for new abortion restrictions there. She will be heavily favored in November. Kleefisch was seen as an early favorite for the GOP nod until Michels’ late entry into the race. Wade era, which appears to show Democrats getting a boost even as Republicans held the seat. But it remains an open question how strongly voters will consider abortion as they make their picks for elected offices. Trump has been angered by Vos’ refusal to push for “decertifying” the 2020 election results — a legally impossible notion that has nevertheless gained traction on the right — even as Vos has led the state legislature in funding an investigation into the state’s elections.
Michels will go on to face Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in what is expected to be a contentious election.
... I have made no commitments to any candidates in 2024." Driving the news: Responding to Merrick Garland's request to a federal court earlier Thursday to unseal parts of the warrant that the attorney general personally approved, Trump said in a statement: "Release the documents now!" - And then: "The day President Trump announces that he’s going to run for president in 2024, if he does, I will support him and I will endorse him."

Thank you to Governor Ducey for his leadership on ensuring Arizona is the best place for our veterans to live and thrive.” Thanks to Governor Ducey for supporting this important legislation.” The governor also took action to support veterans as they transition out of active duty military status. Thank you to Governor Ducey for his support on this common-sense legislation.” Rural electric cooperatives had been getting assessed twice – once through their generation cooperative which were also required to pay the assessment. The fund set up by the special license plates will support one of Arizona’s many inspiring nonprofit organizations. Thank you to Governor Ducey for always supporting Arizona’s families.” Billy’s Place accomplishes that, creating a support system for children and families on their grief journey. The five-year survival rate is over 93 percent when ovarian cancer is diagnosed and treated in its earliest stages, yet only 20 percent of all cases are found early. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Kelli Butler, establishes ovarian cancer awareness license plates that anyone can put on their vehicle. I’m grateful for the community members, business leaders and elected officials who supported these bills.” Sponsored by Sen. Nancy Barto, the legislation opens more options for Arizonans battling heartbreaking, terminal diseases.
He has contemplated trying to overturn the 2020 election, a legal impossibility that is a popular cause among Wisconsin Republicans.
Still, Mr. Michels triumphed in large part thanks to his endorsement from Mr. Trump — a fact he repeated in television advertising that cost millions of dollars. Then, last week, Mr. Michels said during another debate that he wouldn’t endorse Mr. Trump in a 2024 presidential campaign. Ms. Kleefisch began a shadow campaign for governor nearly the moment after she and Mr. Walker left office. Mr. Michels soon began saying that he would consider any legislation the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature sends to his desk. Less than 24 hours later, he reversed himself, telling a crowd in Kaukauna that he would back the former president on the day Mr. Trump announced his candidacy. Mr. Michels will now face Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, in a general election that will determine the fate of voting access in Wisconsin. Mr. Michels has pledged to restrict absentee voting and eliminate the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission; Mr. Evers has vetoed more than a dozen Republican-passed bills to change the state’s voting laws.
The Republican gubernatorial primary in Wisconsin initially appeared to be Rebecca Kleefisch's for the taking.
“He hasn’t been here for Covid. He hasn’t been here for Kenosha” — where riots broke out in August 2020 following the shooting of an unarmed Black man by a white police officer — she said. When undecided voters were asked whom they were leaning toward, Kleefisch had 41% support, while Michels had 39%. A Marquette University Law School poll from June, after Trump’s endorsement, found Michels leading Kleefisch by 27% to 26% — also within the margin of error — among Republican voters and independents who said they’ll vote in the GOP primary. Strategists warn that the prolonged fight threatens to divide Republicans heading into a general election for what many within the party see as a very winnable seat. If we come out of this, regardless of who wins, damaged and toxic and polarized, it’s going to help Evers.” An Emerson College Poll released Saturday found Kleefisch with the support of 36% of Republican primary voters, compared to 34% for Michels — within the margin of sampling error. Michels owns a home in Connecticut, where he lives part of the year. She also nodded heavily to the Walker-Kleefisch record — including legislation still popular among conservative voters here that effectively eliminated collective bargaining rights for most public employees and that allowed people to carry concealed weapons — while pointing out that Michels doesn’t have one at all. The outcome of the general election will have implications for abortion rights and education, as well as elections. The next day, Michels reversed course, vowing to back Trump if he ran again. Now, as voters head to the polls Tuesday in this pivotal battleground state, the race has turned into a dogfight. It’s all part of the final sprint in an intensely watched and close governor’s race that will determine who gets the chance to try to unseat Gov. Tony Evers, one of the most vulnerable Democratic governors in the country. The Republicans are locked in a tight race, according to the latest polling.
Wisconsin GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim Michels, who has been endorsed in the race by former President Donald Trump, has won Wisconsin's Republican primary ...
Some Kleefisch voters who spoke with NBC News in the days leading to Tuesday's primary said they were impressed with the work she and Walker did together. The co-owner of a successful family pipeline construction company, Michels had tread cautiously in the closing weeks of the race, sending mixed messages about how much he was willing to abide Trump's pressure to back decertification of the state's 2020 election results. Michels and Kleefisch had both echoed Trump's debunked claims of voter fraud during the primary. State Rep. Tim Ramthun, who has vowed to challenge the results, finished in a distant third place. Michels has embraced Trump's debunked claims that a second term was stolen from him. Michels is the latest Trump-endorsed candidate for governor to advance to the general election in a battleground narrowly won by Biden in 2020, joining Kari Lake in Arizona, Tudor Dixon in Michigan and Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania. Trump's efforts to unseat Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican who refused to overturn the state's election results, failed in a primary this year.

He lost the 2004 Senate race to Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold, and has been a major donor to GOP politicians. Both Michels and Kleefisch said overturning the 2020 election results was not a priority. The 2020 outcome has been upheld in two partial recounts, a nonpartisan audit, a review by a conservative law firm and multiple lawsuits. And Minnesota Republicans chose Dr. Scott Jensen, a COVID-19 vaccine skeptic endorsed by the state GOP, to face Gov. Tim Walz. Tuesday’s outcomes have far-reaching consequences beyond Wisconsin, a state that is almost evenly split between Republicans and Democrats and where 2022 will be seen as a bellwether for the 2024 presidential race. But the most-watched races were in Wisconsin, where Trump has kept up his pressure campaign to cancel Biden’s 2020 victory. The results Tuesday added to Trump’s record of wins, following victories for his preferred candidates last week in closely watched races for governor and Senate in Arizona. Back in Wisconsin, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes won the Democratic nomination to face Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, one of Trump’s most vocal supporters. Republican National Committee member Leora Levy, whom Trump endorsed last week, will face two-term Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal after she defeated former state House Minority Leader Themis Klarides, who had support from the state party. Trump endorsed Adam Steen after Vos rejected the former president’s pressure to decertify the 2020 results. Meanwhile, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, who supported Trump’s second impeachment, conceded defeat in her Washington state congressional district after being overtaken in late vote tallies by a GOP challenger endorsed by the former president. The former president’s allegations of fraud were also roundly rejected by courts, including by judges Trump appointed.
Cox, who was endorsed in his gubernatorial run by former president Donald Trump, called the FBI search at Mar-a-Lago "criminal."
“Marylanders want a responsible leader who is focused on the issues that affect local families and communities, but Dan Cox blindly puts loyalty to Donald Trump and his harmful MAGA agenda above all else,” Maryland Democratic Party spokesperson Ernest Bailey said in a statement. In the last two election cycles, voters embraced Hogan at the ballot box, but Cox, with his Trump-aligned views, faces an uphill campaign to be Maryland’s next governor. Youngkin also made reference to protests earlier this year outside the Northern Virginia homes of U.S. Supreme Court justices when a draft version of a decision overturning Roe v. Late Monday, the FBI searched a safe at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club, apparently in connection to an investigation of the potential mishandling of classified documents. “This same DOJ labeled parents in Loudoun County as terrorists and failed to enforce federal law to protect Justices in their homes. “Even before yesterday’s events at Mar-a-Lago, America was already dangerously divided,” Hogan said in a statement.

Garza said the ERCOT job pays well and could be appealing for somebody in the power sector who wants to run an organization that’s critical to the lives of most Texans. The private power sector generally pays top executives more than what ERCOT could offer, and the ERCOT CEO is under a much brighter spotlight than any power company CEO after last year’s disaster sowed widespread public distrust in the state power grid. The last week of July, ERCOT’s board of directors held an urgent virtual meeting to consider a “sensitive matter,” which they discussed in a private executive session. That’s not what you want from ERCOT. You want ERCOT to be smart, capable folks who take necessary actions when they’re necessary to take.” “The concern is that once you have an organization that’s sort of kowtowed into believing it needs approval from whoever it needs to come from, that organization is stymied and will wait to take action,” Garza said. “The governor is not just reviewing and editing [ERCOT’s public statements]. He’s telling ERCOT whether or not they can release grid information at all,” said a former senior ERCOT employee who spoke candidly about the matter on the condition of anonymity. “I don’t think he knows anything about running [a grid operator]. He certainly couldn’t figure out who to pick as [PUC] commissioners the first time around,” Garza said. ERCOT’s social media posts have also dwindled: In the four months before February 2021, ERCOT posted 41 times on Facebook, a mix of regular grid updates, job postings and statements from its executives about the grid. Abbott, who is up for reelection in November, has almost entirely avoided discussing the grid publicly this summer, even as Texans have been repeatedly asked to conserve electricity and many have seen their home electric bills skyrocket. “Under the Governor’s leadership, Texans have seen more communication and proactive responses by the PUC and ERCOT to keep the public better informed of current grid conditions, such as voluntary conservation appeals this summer during record-setting temperatures and demand." All three of Abbott’s appointees resigned from the board shortly after the freeze. Before the freeze, the governor’s office was barely involved at all in ERCOT’s public communications, four people familiar with the process said.

One may, for instance, say it is unfair that a person who got into office after 9th February 2020 has the leeway to have two full terms, whereas one who would assume office a day or two earlier will be said to have served a full term. On the contrary, those who assumed office from 10th February 2020 onwards are deemed as having not served for a full-term. It was only in 1992 that a constitutional amendment was made, putting a cap to the presidential term at two five-year terms.
