Aston Villa vs Everton Preview: Probable Lineups, Prediction... (The Hard Tackle)

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard will face each other for the first time as managers when Aston Villa host Everton, with both teams looking for a win.

Coutinho was nowhere near his decent self against Bournemouth and failed to convince the Aston Villa fans that he deserves continuation in the team. Yet, Steven Gerrard convinced the Aston Villa board to spend a significant sum to sign him permanently. As both teams come into this clash at the back of opening day defeats, they could tend to play with the handbrake on. Both clubs are expected to score at some point, although it does give away the feeling of a draw. The Aston Villa defence will likely remain intact unless Mings makes a dramatic recovery and participates in full training ahead of the Everton clash. Despite major defensive injuries, Everton managed to sign Conor Coady from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and the England international will take up a central role in a back three. Aston Villa are not in the best of shapes for the Villa Park audience, who will witness the team for the first time at home this season. The Everton manager will hope to take advantage of Aston Villa’s current wobbly form and ongoing off-field problems to secure three points for his side. Meanwhile, Ollie Watkins could replace Danny Ings as the leading striker, while Leon Bailey starts on the right side of the Aston Villa attack. Everton are the visiting side, and manager Frank Lampard will face his long-term adversary and former England teammate Gerrard for the first time as a manager. Other than that, Steven Gerrard is expected to ring in the changes after the dismal performance at Bournemouth. Chief among them will be in midfield, where he might bring Douglas Luiz into the mix. They were unfortunate to concede a penalty for Jorginho to score and decide the game’s outcome.

Lampard's Everton record is better than Gerrard, who is doing worse ... (iNews)

Gerrard and Lampard are iconic Premier League players but both have encountered difficulties in the dugout ahead of their first meeting as managers.

It is equally tricky to make a judgement call on the pair as managers, at least at Premier League level. James Tarkowski and Conor Coady are solid additions at the other end of the pitch, at least. They have almost identical win percentages: Gerrard has won 34.5 per cent of his 29 games in charge of Villa, while Lampard has fared fractionally better, winning 36.4 per cent of his 22 games. Coutinho has one goal and no assists to show for his last 12 appearances, while Paul McGrath, the club’s greatest ever defender, has come out to bat for Mings, who has also lost his place in the starting line-up. While neither appears to be in any imminent danger of losing their job, each will be looking to instigate improvement across the board having overseen patchy performances and generally disappointing results during their tenures. “I know Stevie is a hard worker and I’m delighted for him that he’s done so well at Rangers and [is] now at a club with the quality of Aston Villa,” chimed Lampard.

Premier League Odds, Picks & Prediction: Aston Villa vs. Everton ... (The Action Network)

Ian Quillen gives his detailed thoughts, plus his top pick, for Saturday's Premier League match between Aston Villa and Everton.

Half of the home wins a season ago came against teams that combined a similar talent level to Villa with an atypical willingness to send numbers forward. Villa will be tasked with taking the game to an opponent in a manner that flummoxed it last season. The Toffees were competitive in five of their last six away games, all except their final day trip to Arsenal after survival was assured. Seven of the Villans’ 13 victories last season came away from Villa Park. A groin injury appears to be limiting the 29-year-old, who appeared in 36 of 38 EPL fixtures a season ago. Aston Villa had a 1-0 win at Goodison Park in early January that hastened the arrival of manager Frank Lampard to take over for caretaker Duncan Ferguson.

Everything you need to know about the match between Aston Villa and Everton at Villa Park this weekend.

Both teams will want to come out fighting after such a poor start, but Villa’s superior quality in attacking areas combined with the backing of the home crowd should see through to a hard-fought win. A hard game to predict. Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia are available for Villa but Kortney Hause remains sidelined.

The Toffees fell to a 1-0 opening day defeat against Chelsea at Goodison Park last weekend, with a penalty from Jorginho settling the contest, but Frank Lampard has strengthened his side in two key areas since then. Salomon Rondon has served his suspension and is likely to start on Saturday, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes, Ben Godfrey and Andros Townsend still missing through injury. Gerrard had managed Patterson during his time as Rangers boss, moving to Aston Villa in November of last year. The Premier League halts for the World Cup in mid-November, with Everton's last game before the break against Bournemouth on November 12. On this occasion, the French full-back will be shaping up against the Toffees. The defender has begun his rehabilitation work at Finch Farm having had surgery earlier this week.

Aston Villa v Everton: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: It's Gerrard v Lampard as both teams look to record their first points of the season. Join Scott Murray.

8 min: Coady puts his foot on the ball and slows things down for Everton. He nearly sends McNeil away with a raking pass. Mykolenko had a bit of his shirt, but not much, and he was outside the box anyway. Villa come again, Cash bursting into the box from the right and falling over, claiming a penalty. The pass is woefully overhit, and Gray does well just to keep the ball in play, then wins a corner. Tarkowski wins a header, and Gordon bundles the loose ball home from a couple of yards. 13 min: Mings sends a long pass down the inside-right channel for Watkins, who takes the ball down neatly, but fails to find Ings in the middle. The ball drops to Gray, six yards out, but before he can poke home, Kamara arrives to deny him and concede a corner. The ball drops to Patterson on the edge of the box. 48 min: Gray flicks a header down the left to cleverly send Mykolenko into space. 46 min: Iwobi miscontrols then brings down McGinn as he prepares to scoot towards the Everton box. 49 min: Patterson takes on Digne down the right and wins. 50 min: Villa predictably struggle to clear the set piece.

Aston Villa vs Everton, Premier League live: score and latest ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

I don't know what Gerrard's got against wingers but Villa are way too narrow against a team playing with wing-backs.

All Villa so far. Not at all sure about Frank Lampard's decision to persist with Anthony Gordon up top when he has Salomon Rondon who might not be prolific but certainly is a presence and brought his Newcastle team-mates into the game well under Rafael Benitez a few years back. Big chance for Villa. McGinn's inswinging corner from the right with his left is arrowed on to Diego Carlos's head. Everton look exceptionally vulnerable when they lose the ball in midfield, lacking the legs to recover quickly. He traps it, faces up Tarkowski and tries to thread a pass through to Ings that Coady cuts out. McNeil tacks towards the left, Gray peels off into space to shoot but McNeil's pass is too heavy and Villa work it out for a corner. When Villa manipulate one of Iwobi and Davies/Doucoure out of position, their otherwise well-organised defence looks vulnerable. Davies is penalised for a foul just inside the Villa half. He recycles it infield but Everton and Iwobi in particular stop the probing. Iwobi floors McGinn 15 yards outside the Villa box. Davies slides in to win the ball and take down Watkins with his followthrough. Gordon feeds off the scraps and clouts a fizzing shot straight at Martinez who slaps it away with his palms.

Aston Villa vs Everton: Gerrard gets better of Lampard in tense clash (NBC Sports)

Aston Villa beat Everton 2-1 at Villa Park as Steven Gerrard got the better of Frank Lampard in their first-ever managerial duel.

Everton stayed compact in what essentially became a 5-3-1-1 formation and Lampard was keen to stay solid defensively and try to hurt Villa with direct play down the wings and from set-piece situations. Gerrard got the better of Lampard this time and his Villa side did just deserve the win. In and around the box they struggled to carve out big chances but they did look very good on the break and when they got the ball forward quickly and with purpose. It was only Week 2 but the passion on the sidelines showed us just how big of a season this is for the former England teammates and friends. They had a real go late on and almost snatched a point and you can’t fault the effort of this Everton side. From the first whistle Villa came flying out of the traps but they couldn’t quite find the cutting edge.
