Roker Rewind: A Lee Burge masterclass at Sunderland vs QPR (Roker Report)

In October 2021, the Lads visited the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium for the next stage in the Carabao Cup. Limbs were flying, and Burgey was massive.

Lee Johnson and Co make their way over to the travelling fans to receive their well-deserved applause. The full-time whistle went, and Sunderland headed into a penalty shootout. Diving all over and not letting Charlie Austin get a single sniff at goal, he was incredible and was not the Burgey we were used to, yet we were dire at the other end, but we’ll ignore that. Half time came and went then, more of the same, Lee Burge becoming a prime Casillas whilst Sunderland’s attack kept missing sitters. Wrong! The concourse is roughly one Niall Quinn wide, and whilst everyone is queuing for the bar, getting to your seat can be challenging. The journey to Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, formally known as Loftus Road, is a relatively simple one into London. Especially because when I jump on a train into London Victoria, I'm already following a few red and white shirts and the closer I get to the stadium, this number only continues to grow.

All the latest from the Stadium of Light as Alex Neil's Black Cats take on Queens Park Rangers in today's Championship clash.

I don't want to take that attacking element and dampen it down at all, because I believe just at the moment it is that attacking threat that gives us the best chance of winning games." Neil says his team is at its best when it is on the front foot, and that has been borne out by an unbeaten start which has seen the Black Cats collect four points from their first two league games against Coventry City and Bristol City. "What might happen is that there might be five positions, but I might only have the luxury of getting four. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman is responsible for landing the club's transfer targets, and Neil believes more new recruits will arrive as the pace picks up in the final two weeks of the window. The Black Cats have four senior central midfielders - Evans, Dan Neil, Jay Matete, and Luke O'Nien - along with Carl Winchester, although Neil now appears to primarily view the latter as a defender. Alex Neil is confident Sunderland will bring in the signings he needs before the transfer window closes - but says no deals are imminent.

Seny Dieng: QPR goalkeeper scores late equaliser vs Sunderland (GiveMeSport)

Going 2-0 down to a side who have just been promoted from League One should of course be a concern for Beale’s side, but those concerns will no doubt be overruled by the jubilation that comes with such a snatch and grab point, and the frantic scenes of Dieng being the man to come up with the goods in front of goal. QPR, meanwhile, will be boosted by the fight of such a late comeback and the incredible and rare feeling that comes with a goalkeeper getting on the scoresheet. Sunderland had romped ahead into a 2-0 lead on Saturday afternoon at the Stadium of Light, but caved under the pressure and conceded two late goals to walk away with a draw after a strong start.

Alex Neil felt late drama vs QPR was bitter pill Sunderland didn't ... (The Northern Echo)

The Sunderland boss gave his reaction to the late drama in the 2-2 with against Queens Park Rangers.

When they get a corner later on, we had the ball, they lose at the edge of the box and then they turn the ball down the side, they have a chance and then it becomes a corner. The chances of that are highly unlikely and as far as I’m concerned, they got out of jail. The problem we had was we got two transitions that cost two chances, if you want to call the free-kick a chance, they both end up in the net. The centre back comes in for the collision but plays a quick pass. Although they played three up front and with a ten, what they did is moved Chair off the left and played Roberts but what Roberts did was push the back line so they had four against three. But I thought as soon as we changed our shape and matched them up and went to a back four, we took the sting out of the game, controlled the ball, got Patrick (Roberts) on the ball and got a bit of joy.

Championship roundup: QPR keeper scores last-gasp leveller at ... (The Guardian)

The QPR goalkeeper Seny Dieng scored a stoppage-time equaliser to force a 2-2 draw at Sunderland in the Championship.

Cardiff manager Steve Morison said he was “pleased as punch” with his team’s performance as they dominated Birmingham to win 1-0, with Aston Villa loanee Jaden Philogene scoring the only goal on 17 minutes. Baker made amends for his spot-kick miss as he levelled after the restart but late goals from Danny Ward and Jordan Rhodes gave Danny Schofield his first win as Terriers manager. Swansea got their first win of the campaign as they beat Blackpool 1-0. “We’re giving ourselves tough things to come back from with silly mistakes, but I don’t think after three games there’s any cause to panic,” he said. The Sky Blues were in dreamland after just 28 minutes as Kyle McFadzean and Matty Godden put them 2-0 up. Rotherham enjoyed a stellar afternoon as they hammered Reading 4-0 at the New York Stadium. The Millers blew Paul Ince’s side away in the first half, racing into a 3-0 lead after only 18 minutes and adding a fourth before the break.

Sunderland v QPR player ratings (West London Sport)

QPR pulled off an incredible late comeback to draw 2-2 at Sunderland, where keeper Seny Dieng scored a last-gasp equaliser. Here's how we rated the Rangers ...

Set up the goal for Chair with a fine 70-yard run down the middle and was hacked down on the edge of the box. Scored with a brilliant free-kick into the top-left corner from 20 yards out to give Rangers a lifeline. Got a second wind in the second half as Sunderland’s midfield grew tired. Made a brilliant block on the line to deny Sunderland a dramatic winner. Diverted the ball into the path of Simms for the killer second goal on the stroke of half-time. Booked for a clumsy challenge midway through the first half and allowed himself to be rolled by Ellis Sims for Sunderland’s second goal.
