The elections had been hailed as step forward for Kenyan democracy, with politicians focused on economic issues rather than tribal mobilization.

That meant anyone could tally the votes and check the electoral commission's math. And these elections also began as the most transparent in the country's history. "That is why I stand before you today despite the intimidation and harassment. Kenya is a model of democracy in East Africa, a region where authoritarianism has been ascendant. "We have a constitutional duty to perform," he said. The commission's chairman, Wafula Chebukati, went on stage anyway and chaos ensued.

The announcement was marred by scuffles, allegations of vote-rigging and a divided electoral commission.

In a country fond of political metaphors, Mr Ruto's stunning victory is akin to his party's modest symbol, the wheelbarrow, running a seven-tonne tractor off the road. We do not have the luxury to look back," he added. Several opinion polls, which Mr Ruto had dismissed as fake, predicted his rival would win. "To those who have done many things against us, I want to tell them there's nothing to fear. This was the first time Mr Ruto, 55, had run for president. "It is a wonderful evening…

Now Kenyans must wait to see whether Odinga will again go to court to contest the results of Tuesday’s peaceful election in a country crucial to regional stability. The sudden split in the commission came minutes after Odinga’s chief agent said they could not verify the results and made allegations of “electoral offences” without giving details or evidence. Ruto, the deputy president, had appeared to be leading the longtime opposition leader, Raila Odinga, as Kenyans awaited final results of the election held nearly a week ago.

NAIROBI, Kenya. Kenya's electoral commission on Monday announced William Samoei Ruto as the fifth president of the East African nation.

He ran in the election with the Kenya Kwanza coalition and said earlier that his government will focus on transforming the country's economy to achieve durable growth while maintaining macroeconomic stability and empowering the people at the bottom of the pyramid. Two other electoral commissioners were injured during a scuffle that happened at Bomas of Kenya, where the election results were announced. Announcing the election results, Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioners (IEBC) head Wafula Chebukati said Ruto won 7,176,141 votes, 50.49% of the total vote, while his main opponent, 77-year-old former Prime Minister Raila Odinga had 48.85% (6,942,930 votes).

There was not the same level of mobilising ethnic vote as seen in previous elections. This was the first time Mr Ruto, 55, had run for president. We do not have the luxury to look back," he added. In Mr Ruto's home town of Eldoret in the Rift Valley, thousands of residents broke into song and dance. "To those who have done many things against us, I want to tell them there's nothing to fear. In his acceptance speech Mr Ruto called for unity, saying he wanted to be a president of all, and for the country to focus on the future.

A majority of the electoral commission said they could not stand by the result. What happens next will be closely watched.

“Under the leadership of Chair Wafula Chebukati, the IEBC declared William Ruto as the winner of the presidential election,” the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi said in a statement. This year, in a twist, Odinga had the support of Kenyatta, a longtime adversary. Odinga, making a fifth bid for the nation’s highest office, dismissed Ruto’s rhetoric as an attempt at “class warfare.” He argued that Ruto was not the champion of the poor that he claimed. Ruto owed his success in part to his support among the Kikuyus, Kenya’s largest tribe, initial results indicated. Ruto praised Kenyans for moving beyond the “ethnic configurations” that had shaped past elections, but tribe still played an important factor. Media organizations, which started tallying the results on their own, paused and then resumed their counts, giving a variety of explanations that left Kenyans with more questions than answers. His running mate, Rigathi Gachagua, was ordered by a court last month to pay back about $1.7 million that it determined was linked to corruption. Ruto has dismissed claims by critics that his wealth was acquired through corruption. Odinga’s campaign could challenge the results in the Supreme Court, as it did successfully in 2017. The electoral commission’s chair, Wafula Chebukati, said Ruto narrowly defeated Odinga in the Aug. 9 vote. “We are sick. His opponent, former prime minister Raila Odinga, 77, had not issued a statement late Monday night.

Kenya election result: William Ruto defies the odds for victory (BBC News)

Kenya's Deputy President William Ruto has defied the odds by winning the fiercely contested presidential election in East Africa's powerhouse.

He justified it by comparing his deputy to a co-driver who threw things out of a vehicle while the driver was busy steering it. He also won by a landslide in Mount Kenya - the political heartland of Mr Odinga's running-mate Martha Karua and the outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta. In the presidential vote, he even trounced Mr Odinga in the constituencies of both Ms Karua and Mr Kenyatta. "I stand before you despite intimidation and harassment. Mr Ruto was magnanimous in his victory speech, saying he would work with "all leaders" and would strive to ensure the nation was "united and prosperous". There were chaotic scenes inside the main tallying centre.

The Constitution of Kenya requires the winner of a presidential election to garner at least 50 per cent plus one (1) of the total votes cast besides getting at least 25 per cent of the votes in half of Kenya’s 47 counties. “William Samoei Ruto has been duly elected as the president of the Republic of Kenya,” announced IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati to thunderous applause from Ruto’s supporters who have been camping at the national tallying centre at Bomas since vote counting started six days ago. The Commision chairman Wafula Chebukati through a gazette notice of Tuesday said the two were duly elected as President and Deputy President having fulfilled the threshold set under Article 138 (4) of the Constitution which requires that a candidate gets more than half the number of votes cast countrywide and at least 25 per cent of the vote in “each of more than half the counties.”
