The violent car collision involving Heche earlier this month destroyed much of a two-story house in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles. Dozens of firefighters battled the ensuing blaze for more than an hour. Los Angeles: Hollywood actor Anne Heche has been taken off life support, two days after she was declared legally dead from brain injuries sustained in a car crash in Los Angeles, her spokeswoman said. Heche, known for 1990s movies "Donnie Brasco" and "Six Days, Seven Nights" as well as a relationship with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, had been comatose since driving her car into a building on August 5.

Why the media declared Anne Heche dead twice (The Washington Post)

Journalists were forced to confront a legal, even philosophical question after Heche lost brain activity but remained technically alive: When is someone ...

A person close to the Heche family, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive conversations, was sympathetic to the reporters. As a result, some news organizations stockpile hundreds of “advancers”— pre-written obits on well-known people that can be published within minutes of a confirmed death. Managers for “Leave It to Beaver” co-star Tony Dow had to withdraw a premature Facebook post announcing his death last month after his wife mistakenly told them the gravely ill actor had been declared dead. There’s a long history of premature reporting about the demise of famous people, stretching back decades. “It was a complicated situation when you’re keeping a body alive to harvest the organs. The Post’s obituaries editor, Adam Bernstein, said the newspaper doesn’t recognize brain death as a clear marker of death. She said the newspaper’s reporters “confirmed” with family members that she had died. The publication published a follow-up story Sunday night reporting that she had been taken off life support, ending all signs of life. When Heche’s publicist confirmed that she had been taken off life support late Sunday night, news organizations published a new round of news stories reporting her death. Heche’s Wikipedia page underwent a flurry of revisions as users debated her status, changing her death date before deleting it altogether at one point. It’s not the first time that a celebrity’s passing was accompanied by public confusion. “An individual who has sustained … irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brain stem, is dead,” reads the statute.

Anne Heche's ex Ellen DeGeneres NOT invited to 'small and private ... (MEAWW)

The former lovers had not been in contact for the past several years, despite Ellen Degeneres' polite public remarks following Anne Heche's accident.

It’s hard for me, it’s hard for my family, it’s really hard for Homer, but we’ve got each other and we have a lot of support and we’re going to be OK.” Mine was to find love, and hers was, ‘I want $60 billion.’ Good, good luck, our forks are never going to meet.” Her relationship with Ellen not only ruined her career, but their separation also caused another major brouhaha that made it diffcult for the pair to stay friends. I was fired from a $10 million picture deal.” The one exception was the romcom 'Six Days Seven Nights,' a role she nearly lost until Harrison Ford stepped in to make sure she wouldn't be fired. Due to the wide-spread public scrutiny the pair received, Heche was rejected as a Hollywood leading lady for almost a decade. The stigma attached to that relationship was so bad … I didn’t do a studio picture for 10 years. The burial service would only involve people close to Anne. The insider went on to say, “Ellen felt the need to say something after Anne died.

Remembering Anne Heche (The Boston Globe)

The engaging and candid actress, who died Sunday, deserved better than she got from Hollywood.

Don’t hide, don’t lie, don’t manipulate, and you’ll get blessed.” However stony her road in life, she struck me as someone who took each step with curiosity though it sometimes landed her on pitted, uneven ground. She mocked a much-publicized mental health episode Heche suffered and characterized the actress’s career achievement as having “slept with a lot of famous people.” It was a cheap, misogynistic punchline. That was a ridiculous conclusion given how Heche’s once-ascendant career stalled due to intolerance inside and outside of Hollywood. DeGeneres and Heche’s “Oprah” episode helped slowly thaw the ice between me and my mother after I came out. Stardom, the kind that sells tickets and fills theater seats, is all that matters in Hollywood. Studio executives fretted over whether audiences would accept Heche as a romantic lead opposite a man. “It was so strange to me that someone would say I could have my career taken away from me because I’m in love,” she said to me. In interviews and her 2001 memoir, “ Call Me Crazy,” she spoke candidly about surviving sexual abuse by her father, his death from AIDS, and her own struggles with substance use and mental health. Heche, 53, died Sunday from injuries sustained when her car crashed into a Los Angeles home and burst into flames on Aug. 5. “I’ve seen people go down that path, and they may have careers but, Jesus, can they look in the mirror in the morning? As Heche garnered enthusiastic reviews for her performances in “Donnie Brasco” and “Walking and Talking,” she became one-half of the most high-profile lesbian couple in Hollywood history. She will not discuss her personal life.”

The late actress gushed over seeing a reflection of herself in one of her former on-screen daughters.

In the week following her accident and death, Heche was flooded with tributes from her former co-stars, friends and Tupper -- who is the father of her 13-year-old son, Atlas. On Sunday, a rep confirmed to ET that the actress was "peacefully" taken off life support, as her organs found recipients for transplants. I would tell you to read Call Me Crazy, but it’s now $200 on Amazon. I paid it because I want to read it again. She was talking about mental health before it was acceptable to talk about those struggles,” the actress added. In a lengthy post on her Instagram, Bergl honored Heche, who was often described as “crazy.” "Kristen, again, felt like a reflection to me ... Her ability to tell story, do it through joy, do it with her personality, charm, gorgeous timing, and humor -- I see myself a lot in her. "I've seen her Hannah Montana. To be able to do that, to be able to express that, to be able to be as bold as she's been -- going from Disney into, you know, 'Wrecking Ball,'" Heche gushed, "the way she moves, the way she sings, her voice, her compassion -- she f**king loves everyone. If Anne Heche's life were a movie, she knew just who to put in the lead role. "That's who I am." "That would get some ratings." "Ooh, b***!" she exclaimed. I don't think it's any mistake that I played her mom, and now I want her to play me."

The day after she split from Ellen DeGeneres (64), Anne turned up at a stranger’s home in the tiny town of Cantua Creek, California, wearing nothing but shorts and a bra, asking if she could take a shower. Anne was conscious, and in video footage of the crash she could be seen sitting up on the stretcher and seemingly arguing with firefighters while trying to escape. "She was crazy in love with him," one friend told sources. Around that time, they resettled in New Jersey and it was there that she began acting. Mine was to find love, and hers was, 'I want $60 billion'...Good, good luck; our forks are never going to meet." Thirty minutes later, Anne crashed into a two-story home along the same street causing the house and the actress' car to become engulfed in flames. “Hopefully my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom.” She crashed into the garage of a home and hit another car but was initially unharmed. Anne said in November 2001 interview: "My father was a schizophrenic. After three years together they went their separate ways with Anne later slamming Ellen for being money-hungry. His death, when Anne was 13, left the family destitute and homeless. After leaving the wig store, Anne was seen speeding through the neighbourhood of Mar Vista in Los Angeles in her blue Mini Cooper.
