Europa League recap: Shamrock Rovers 1-0 Ferencvaros (RTE.ie)

Andy Lyons' last-minute header ensures a famous win at Tallaght Stadium as the Hoops bow out of the Europa League 4-1 on aggregate.

Ferencvaros had their moments and Sean Gannon, who endured a rough time at the Groupama Arena, made one fine block. It’s likely he will be tempted overseas in 2023 but it will be enjoyable for Rovers fans to watch his development in the meantime. It livened up from the restart with Mmaee involved at both ends. There was the odd sign of inexperience yet the fact he was trusted on dead balls reflects the esteem in which he is held. However, there was an absence of urgency which was perhaps understandable given the cushion. As the game entered its dying stages, it was Rovers that were asking more questions and Byrne seized on a yard of space to execute a perfect through ball that resulted in Bogdan pushing a Lyons effort wide of the post.

Ferencvaros progressed in this Europa League play-off but it was night where Shamrock Rovers restored pride.

Ferizaj faded in the second half and was replaced with another teenager, Gideon Tetteh, the quality of whose cameo in the first leg took even his manager by surprise. There was no surprise in Mannus’ reaction moments later to deny Mmaee one-on-one moments later: he is arguably in the best form of his career. Here he came off the bench in the second half and came close to creating the opening goal twice before he did, courtesy of a precise corner that was headed home by Andy Lyons with two minutes remaining. Richie Towell almost forced an opening goal in the half’s closing stages, pilfering possession from a short goal kick and rolling it right to Emakhu, whose screwed attempt across the box was either a poor shot or a brilliant cross that Towell, on his heels, missed. Kavanagh, a growing influence in midfield for Rovers, nabbed possession from Mmaee midway through his own half, onto which Emakhu bounded before being clipped on the edge of the box by Anderson Esiti. Ferizaj came closest to scoring in the first half, jinking inside and curling a long-range shot that whistled just by Adam Bogdan’s left-hand post.

Had Ferencvaros played at the weekend, Cherchesov would have been prepared to make several changes to his team given the size of the lead. Given their previous round performances and their current position in Irish football, Shamrock Rovers would have been optimistic that they could shock Ferencvaros to progress to the Europa League. The Irish lost 4-0 in Hungary, leaving them with the task of scoring one of the greatest comebacks in European football to secure a place in the group stage of the competition.

Europa League playoff round, second leg. Shamrock Rovers 1 (Andy Lyons 89). Ferencváros 0. This was everything Shamrock Rovers wanted in the parlous predicament ...

Tallaght, where they staged their 2011 Europa League series against Tottenham, Rubin Kazan and PAOK , will remain their home, with the first encounter, home or away, scheduled for September 8. It stitched on a fourth win to the Hoops’ perfect home record since the journey began eight games ago in early July and was merited for their endeavour. A single victory over the six game series will gross €500,000, almost double the gap in prize-money Rovers missed out on. Conference League group stages were guaranteed regardless of this outcome and there’s the vital business of attempting to complete the double for the first time in almost 40 years. All eyes will now be trained on Friday’s Conference League draw, the ceremony for which begins at 1pm. Bogdan stooped low to bat away Sean Kavanagh’s free-kick 10 minutes after the restart but the breakthrough they pined – improving their coefficient for future campaigns too – eventually came.

The midfielder first cleverly nicked the ball off the toe of Mmaee to give Emakhu a run on goal. Emakhu pounced on the loose ball in the box to cross. Towell couldn’t stretch to apply the finish with Bogdan out of position. With the game finally sparked to life, Rovers had a let off within a minute, Mmaee bursting through on goal to bring another fine save from the alert Mannus who rushed off his line to close down the angle. Maintaining the pressure, Kavanagh then whipped over a terrific ball from the left for Towell at the far post with the first time volley arrowing not far over the crossbar. In that regard, another big result for Stephen Bradley’s side on the night came elsewhere, Sheriff beating Pyunik in a penalty shootout in their Europa League clash means Rovers will be a third seed (of four pots) in that third tier draw.

The main positive to come out of the game for Shamrock Rovers was the performance of man-of-the-match Justin Ferizaj. They kept their concentration for the majority of the 90 minutes, and held Shamrock Rovers to just a handful of chances. Ferencvaros played a tactically sound game this evening.

Shamrock Rovers 1-0 Ferencvaros: Deserved victory for home side ... (Irish Mirror)

It was a good win for Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght as they won yet another home game.

But Lyons wouldn’t be denied and in the 89th minute, from Byrne’s corner, he ran across goal and buried a brilliant header to win the game if not the tie. And although Ferencvaros caused moments of panic in the Rovers rearguard, the Hoops still looked the more likely to score. But after weathering that early storm, Rovers settled and dominated the majority of a dull opening half in which teenager Justin Ferizaj was the star of the show. And the confidence gained from their four home wins in Europe is a sweet platform from which to launch a sustained assault. Andy Lyons saw to that with a brilliant bullet header in the 89th minute from a Jack Byrne corner as the two substitutes combined. Even though Tallaght was a near sell-out of 7,163, nobody believed that the Hoops would launch a comeback from 4-0 down to stay afloat in the Europa League proper.

It is the first time an Irish team has reached the group phase of the Conference League since its inception last year. Our record is right up there with the best of us. “We've shown this year against Ludogorets against Shkupi, and others over previous years like Limassol and Brann that we can go and win games in Europe. They beat Dundalk in the 2020 Europa League group home and away, 3-1 and 2-1. We'll do our best to come out of it. That latter win ensured their passage into Conference League, regardless of how they fared against Ferencváros.

As they have so often this season, Bradley’s substitutions paid off as Rovers found a winner as we entered the final minute of the game. The 17-year-old cut in from the left wing and curled a brilliant shot with his right foot that just missed the target by a matter of yards. That late winner meant the Hoops have now won all four home games in Europe this season. A Ferencváros free kick from the left reached Ryan Mmaee whose powerful header was spectacularly saved by Alan Mannus to keep it scoreless at half-time. Ferizaj would have the first real opportunity of the game 27 minutes in. The opening 15 minutes of the game did not provide many clear-cut opportunities for either side.

Late on Thursday night, Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley spoke about a discussion with his players in January.

Third-placed finish in Sweden last term, two points off the top in a thrilling title race. They finished second in the top flight, three points behind the Bodo Glimt side that narrowly missed out on the Champions League. They play in the 20,000 capacity Ghelamco Arena. They have no reason to be terrified of a pool comprised of Gent (Belgium), Molde (Norway) and Djurgarden (Sweden) but it’s hardly a great outcome either. “The aim is to get out of the group. “The talk in January wasn’t let’s get to the groups and go and have a party,” said Bradley, outlining how they want to become the first Irish side to reach a knockout stage.

The lowdown on Shamrock Rovers' Europa Conference League ... (Irish Examiner)

Ireland's back-to-back champions know they will face KAA Gent, Molde and Djurgardens in Group F but it will be Saturday before they discover the schedule.

Neale Fenn’s goal in the first leg proved decisive for a side that would go on to win the Premier Division two months later. Star player: Joel Asoro: It’s been an eventful career by 23, becoming Sunderland’s youngest debutant in 2016 and flopping following a €2m move to Swansea City. Away goals were needed to brush off the Saints while they battled back from a first half deficit to prevail 3-2 on aggregate against Bohemians. Dundalk made a better fist it during the 2020 Europa League group stage, going ahead at Tallaght before losing 2-1. Ex-Manchester City striker Uwe Rosler had a brief spell in 2010, helping them avoid relegation. This third-tier category was designed with the smaller countries in mind. What is confirmed is Tallaght Stadium hosting the three home matches, a desire realised by some logistical upgrades at the 7,500-capacity arena. Fun fact: Both Solskjaer and Age Hareide, in charge of the Denmark side that slayed Ireland in the World Cup playoff, had two spells in charge of the club. So, what’s ahead as Rovers and League of Ireland fans bask in the prestige of being among the 96 teams and 36 countries part of the three group stages? Domestic form: Like Ireland, their season format runs through the summer and they currently lead the Eliteserien, five points ahead of Lillestrom and a further two on Bode/Glimt. Two of the four teams progress to the last-16 knockout stage and Stephen Bradley harbours genuine hopes of snatching one of the tickets. The glitz and glam of the European draws are over and Shamrock Rovers can sketch out their Conference League roadmap over the next nine weeks.

A guide to the opponents and the riches awaiting Shamrock Rovers ... (The42)

Rovers manager Stephen Bradley. Image: PA. SHAMROCK ROVERS TODAY learned their opponents in the Europa Conference League group phase, so let's learn a little ...

The duo have been in charge at Djurgardens since 2018, and they led them to the league title in 2019. Djurgardens are the only side in the group playing with a back four regularly. He has been loaned to Gent for the season, and made his debut in the defeat to Omonia. They started with a back four in the second leg against Omonia – presumably to chase the tie – but abandoned it at half-time. A couple of Liverpool fans bought tickets to the game in Genk and then missed the game by turning up in Gent by mistake. They play out of the 20,000-capacity Ghelamco Arena in the city of Ghent. Gent lost the Belgian Super Cup final to Club Brugge and then drew their first two league games, the first 2-2 against Standard Liege in spite of playing against 10 men for 75 minutes. They went to the last-16 of the competition last year before being knocked out by PAOK, who had beaten Bohemians in the qualifying rounds. He led them to the league title in 2014/15, and then through the Champions League group phase the following season. It’s pooled across the group and then distributed to the four teams, proportional to the number of wins on the board. Wins in the group are worth €500,000, with draws worth €166,000 to each team. They will also receive a co-efficient ranking fee, which is a trickle down of a money-grab by the biggest clubs a few years ago, who cut a deal to award the historically successful Champions League sides more money.
