Goals from Pernille Harder and Lauren James sealed victory at Kingsmeadow in our final pre-season friendly.

Our energetic start set the tone and Emma Hayes’ Blues dominated possession in the early stages, but the first chance went to Spurs. We begin our WSL title defence against West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, 11 September when we will also be celebrating Chelsea Women’s 30-year anniversary and 10 years under Emma Hayes. The versatile Cuthbert, who excelled in a deep-lying midfield role, also tested Spencer with a shot from 18 yards. And within moments Jess Carter’s long diagonal ball into the box brought the opening goal for Harder. She picked out James who could only blast the ball straight at keeper Becky Spencer. A strong Blues line-up played at an impressive tempo and looked increasingly sharp as the match wore on.

But we dug deep and turned the game on its head with Didier Drogba and Hernan Crespo both finding the net in a stunning three-minute spell around the half-hour mark. Indeed it was hard to tell which team had the extra man for most the contest as the Blues continued to dominate, with John Terry and William Gallas adding to the scoreline after the interval to complete a memorable derby win against the Hammers. The odds looked to be against the defending champions reaching the final for the third time in four seasons with a tricky second leg to come at Goodison Park, but we continued to battle for a win despite the player disadvantage.
