City finish pre-season with Liverpool draw (Manchester City FC)

Manchester City Women's finished off their pre-season preperations with a 1-1 draw with Liverpool in a behind-closed doors friendly at the Academy Stadium.

Kick-off will be at 19:00 (UK). [Julie Blakstad](https://www.mancity.com/players/julie-blakstad) played Castellanos through on goal, beating the offside trap but the Venezuelan striker couldn't grab her second goal of the game, dragging a left-footed shot wide. [Mary Fowler](https://www.mancity.com/players/mary-fowler) found space on the left-hand side, picking out Angeldahl at the back post but the midfielder directed her header wide of the post. [Gareth Taylor](https://www.mancity.com/players/gareth-taylor)'s side continued to be on top and came close to an eye-catching leveler when [Laura Coombs](https://www.mancity.com/players/laura-coombs) picked up the ball from deep, striding forwards before taking a long-range strike at goal that forced Laws into a good save. [Deyna Castellanos](https://www.mancity.com/players/deyna-castellanos) tapped in a rebound after seeing her penalty saved, and we were in control for much of the game as we looked to round off pre-season with a win. But Liverpool equalised in the closing stages, with Emma Koivisto heading home a corner to deny us the win and see us share the spoils with the Reds.

What Pep Guardiola and Man City coaches have said about Rico ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City's Rico Lewis has gone from an under-18s fringe player to a first team player in just a year, taking tips from Joao Cancelo along the way.

He also said: "Now I have the feeling that if we have a problem with Kyle and Joao we have players who can replace them. "Maybe I wouldn't enjoy it as much in another club but definitely at City I like it a lot because there is more involvement in the team. I think it's very important that he gets his education as much as possible in every game that he can play." Still, Lewis will be expected to drop down to the Premier League 2 whenever he is available to further his development in game settings. He deserves almost to have that celebration of the whole weekend. A first competitive senior outing would follow as a late substitute in the Premier League vs Bournemouth, earning more praise from Guardiola, and he then started at the Camp Nou in this week's friendly with Barcelona. "I see [Cancelo] in training a lot when they do a tactical and they will be talking about his position so then I can see it better. U18 coach Ben Wilkinson said this season: โ€œItโ€™s a great example to players and staff that the pathway is there. Academy coaches have praised Lewis' work ethic, especially over the last 12 months, and he was named under-18 Player of the Year last season, voted for by coaches. Last summer, he was named as U18 captain, scoring on the first two games of the season from right-back in a big win over Manchester United and a 1-1 draw against Everton. Except with Egan-Riley gone, and Aleks Zinchenko's departure for the first team, City's full-back options thinned over the summer and a door may have opened for Lewis on the right. Fast-forward 12 months, and he has won two academy titles, made his Premier League debut, and started at the Camp Nou against Barcelona.
