Match preview: New York Red Bulls vs. Philadelphia Union (The Philly Soccer Page)

The Union's greatest don't-call-it-a-rivalry returns this weekend as Philly hops on the Jersey Turnpike and heads north to face New York's oldest soccer team ...

The Union haven’t had a multi-goal margin of victory against a team above the playoff line since March’s trip to face New York City. But going the other way Red Bull’s defense should be all first-pick players, and with the third fewest goals allowed this season that’ll be a tough nut to crack. Whatever result the Union get, the game out in California will be of particular interest. Presumably the Red Bull center backs will have their hands full with Uhre and Carranza, leaving the defensive midfield responsible for the Hungarian. The history between these two teams is undeniable, even if the rivalry apparently is, and the Union will be playing against that history to a certain extent as they’ll be looking for just their third-ever win in Red Bull Arena. Just like the Union offense hasn’t been tested in some time, the Union defense has had it easy of late. Which could go either way- maybe the fireworks we’ve enjoyed in the last month are just castles made of sand since they haven’t really been tested, or maybe they really are something special and just needed time to gel in order to reach their true potential. The only real positions without certainty, left midfield and right back, are less a question of “who can do the job” and more about “who is the best fit against the opposition”. Even today, there’s a lot to be said for a team that’s allowed the third fewest goals so far this season, and while their offense hasn’t been quite as prolific as the Union’s of late there’s no denying that it’s gotten results. Players to watch there include keeper Carlos Coronel who came to New York through Red Bull farm teams in Brazil and Austria (and also Bethlehem Steel FC), and the USMNT’s Aaron Long. Luckily for the Union, the timing of this game is somewhat in their favor. It’s a system that was familiar to the Union before they appointed a former Red Bull Salzburg executive to be their sporting director in Ernst Tanner, and it’s made the Red Bulls a tough nut to crack historically.

Brotherly Game Daily Links: Union renew rivalry with Red Bulls (Brotherly Game)

MLS Weekend preview, Curtin defends not rotating Union lineup, and more in today's links.

Edwards thus ends his MLS career with 47 league appearances in what turned out to be a far more substantial stint than its temporary nature first implied. 1, after plenty of big deals involving MLS players went through this summer. “I’m sure they’ll bounce back and Steve’s a great coach too and will get them back on track. We have to put pressure on them and be there. Since the home side holds so little of the ball, these moments rarely pop up, and Red Bull often uses them to turn the tables and execute their own attacking transition when an opponent over-extends themselves pushing forward. Matchday Preview: Philadelphia Union (Once A Metro)

The Red Bulls test themselves against the best in the East tonight in Harrison.

I’ll try and predict the madness, and go for a 2-1 win in Harrison. Coronel will have a big responsibility to keep the score down if the Red Bulls want a realistic chance at coming out of the matchup with a result. Against the rampant Union attack, the Red Bulls defense will have their hands full, and Coronel will most certainly be called on to come up big on whatever shots make their way through. The Union’s stern defense has been one of their strengths for years, and being the last man Blake is a big contributor to that. A game against the best team in the East, and arguably the best in the entire league. Arguably the Red Bulls’ best player in his debut season for the club in 2021, the former Union man has not quite hit the heights he did last campaign. A big performance against the Red Bulls spells real trouble for a New York attack that has had its ups and downs throughout the year, with Lewis Morgan being the lone consistent piece. Although the much diminished defense is mostly due to blame for the downturn in fortunes, Coronel has come into criticism in recent weeks for some concessions that may or may not have been his fault. [Philadelphia Union](https://www.brotherlygame.com) are the closest thing that the Red Bulls have to a cousin in the league, a young, high-pressing team with a fruitful academy and an affinity for scouting for low-budget, high-quality players rather than going the flashy route. The first overall pick in the 2014 SuperDraft, Blake has built his entire career with the Union, having just made his 200th appearance for the club last Wednesday. A model servant to the club, and one that will probably get traded this winter now that I wrote all this. When the ball is lost, the young team’s energy is taken advantage of, as the Union boast the second most pressures in the league (You would not believe who’s first), and the fifth most successful pressures in the league.

On July 14, 2022, he signed with Red Bulls II and appeared in five matches and logged 435 minutes. “We are excited to have Hassan join the group,” said Head Coach Gerhard Struber. During that stint, he appeared in four matches with the first team and made 58 appearances with Red Bulls II.

Those wound up proving to be the difference for the Mets in their 5-3 win, and Lux said after the game he needed to be able to make the catch. However, things are finally looking up in that department as head coach Sean McVay said Jefferson has been making headway in his knee recovery, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com: While Jefferson’s Week 1 availability is in doubt, McVay had better news for his running backs as Akers and Henderson will be available against the Bills: Jefferson had a procedure done to fully fix an issue in his knee, while both Akers and Henderson were both dealing with soft-tissue injuries. While I’ve been back in the clubhouse the past few weeks, and plan to remain with the club through the end of the season, I am still not ready to return to the field. Lux takes blame for misplays against Mets Part of the Dodgers failing to maintain a lead against the New York Mets in the series finale at Chase Field was partly due to misplays by Lux. Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin cleared to resume throwing Tony Gonsolin also underwent an MRI and while Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he doesn’t have the specifics of the results, he knows the club was happy with the outcome. But at the end of the day, the referee’s decision is final and I am still SmackDown Women’s Champion and the only woman in WWE to beat Ronda Rousey twice. Ohtani was 1-for-4 with a walk Friday in the 4-2 loss to the Astros. “I’ve been dealing with this privately with a great team of professionals, but I need to continue to put in the hard work off the field towards feeling mentally healthy. But the fact that Garoppolo was willing to come back on a reduced salary, and with a clause that he will not be traded or franchise tagged, definitely seems to suggest he still sees an opportunity to play in San Francisco this season. struggling with my mental health in a way that has extended my time away from the game that I love so much,” Meadows wrote in his statement. As Young puts it, it should be eye-opening to Garoppolo that he is 33-14 as a starter, been to a Super Bowl, and played in two NFC Championship games and he was still unable to find a starting job this offseason in a quarterback-centric league. And if there is anybody that knows anything about a quarterback controversy in San Francisco, it is Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young who was a part of the ultimate quarterback controversy in San Francisco with Joe Montana 30 years ago.

Talking New York Red Bulls with Once A Metro (Brotherly Game)

We reached out to Ben Cork and our pals over at Once A Metro to scout the Union's Saturday night opponent.

But after a stretch during the summer where it seemed like every game featured fights and cards, Red Bulls games have mellowed out in recent weeks. After spending a couple games playing rigidly defensive to try and stop a flood of goal concession, the team started adding goals to their game again in an away match in Atlanta while finally getting their first home win in months over Miami last week. Indeed it looks like the Red Bulls have swerved away from disaster.

By the way, they have the best offense in MLS, on the other hand, they have the best defense in MLS. However, they have the best team in the league in front of them and they will have to make a big effort. No doubt, this will be a big clash between two teams that are not too friendly. True, the Bulls have 10 points less, however, they are in the 3rd position in the Eastern Conference and they have earned 10 points in the last 4 matches. They want the best position possible for the postseason. They are a team with high pressing and certainly they will go for the win.

The rotated group held off the Red Bulls in the first half, and got the win in the second. The Red Bulls woke up, forcing the Union to weather a spell of pressure. Rather than be selfish, the Dane hit a pass across the goalmouth to a crashing Bedoya. McGlynn did almost all the work, controlling the ball in midfield, finding space, charging forward, and slipping a perfect pass in to his striker. That proved to be Philly’s best chance of the half, and the sides went in scoreless. In midfield, Jose Martinez and Alejandro Bedoya were rested, with Jack McGlynn and Matt Real coming in at the shuttler spots.

After a rough first half, Mikael Uhre broke the second half open early, and Dániel Gazdg scored late to set a new Union record for most goals in a year.

The Union have a new all-time top scorer across all competitions in a year. Carranza picked Nealis’ pocket and passed the ball forward to Uhre, who played a sublime first-touch flick back to Carranza. It looked and sounded like the most Union fans to make the trip north for a game here. If it was to help try to get over the top of New York’s defense, it didn’t work. Uhre’s goal was set up from a breathtaking run by McGlynn. Leon Flach took Martínez’s place at the bottom of the diamond, after Martínez said a few hours before the game that a nagging rib injury was too much to bear.
