Apple has announced that the iPhone 14 will no longer have a physical SIM card slot in the way, paving the way for broader eSIM adoption.

Electronic SIMs, or eSIMs, allow you to connect to a cellular network without needing a physical card that you insert into the phone. This aligns with previous reports that Apple would be pushing harder for eSIMs, but the removal of physical SIM support altogether may come as a shock to some. iPhones have supported eSIMs for a while now, but now, the iPhone 14 is dropping support for physical SIM cards in the US, meaning there will no longer be a SIM card slot.

CUPERTINO, Calif.—Today at its first indoor, in-person product launch event since the pandemic began, Apple announced the new iPhone 14 lineup.

There's a new 12MP main camera with a larger sensor and larger pixels at 1.9 microns. Both iPhone 14 models have Apple's A15 Bionic system-on-a-chip, the exact same chip found in last year's model. It also has a faster aperture (f/1.5) for better motion freezing, as per Apple. (That said, some early leaks suggested these new phones have more RAM than their 2021 counterparts.) The new iPhones only support eSIMs. On major carriers, that's not an issue, but smaller resellers and international carriers are left out for now.

I bought my iPhone 11 when I lived in the Netherlands, and it has both a Dutch eSIM and a physical Verizon SIM. Physical SIMs make it easy to bring your phone to a different carrier or bring your number to a new phone. Also worth noting is that Geekbench doesn’t test the GPU and the A16 should bring an improvement on that front too. Frequency is 7% up and performance is 9% up so basically 0 increase in IPC. Performance isn’t everything, Apple claims that the 33.3% performance increase also comes with a 20% reduction in power. That is +9% single-core and actually a small decrease in the multi-core test.
