In the election conducted on Thursday, September 8, Shollei defeated Farah Maalim of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.

Having failed to get the required 2/3 support of the 349 members in the first round, the vote was headed for the second round. In the election conducted on Thursday, September 8, Wetang'ula was declared the winner after Marende withdrew his bid before the commencement of the second round of voting. With no one meeting the 2/3 threshold, the voting was headed to the second round before Maalim conceded the defeat.
