Jürgen Klopp may have no quick fix for struggling Liverpool's problems (The Guardian)

When Klopp first issued the warning via BT Sport after the game it sounded ominously, dramatically, like a Liverpool manager calling time on a successful yet ...

“We’re not in the best shape, best situation, but we’re going to make this right – that’s the confidence I have,” said the defender. The introduction of the fit-again and desperately needed Thiago Alcântara restored a semblance of order to Liverpool’s display in Naples, although the game had long gone by then and there may be no quick fix to Klopp’s problems. Trent Alexander-Arnold did not disguise his disgust when picking out Salah unmarked inside the Napoli area only for his pinpoint cross to roll under the forward’s foot and out for a goal-kick. The question, daft on so many levels, brought the final press conference of the night to a suitably disheartening close for Klopp. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson are not in the same predicament today, despite performing in a more judgmental world typified on Wednesday by a journalist asking Klopp whether he feared a repeat of Then, Shankly decided in the wake of an FA Cup defeat by second-division Watford that he had to “do my job and change the team”.

Jürgen Klopp can 'reinvent' Liverpool by looking back to the future ... (Liverpool.com)

Jürgen Klopp has said Liverpool need to "kind of reinvent ourselves", yet they can achieve that with a subtle change which has worked for him and the club ...

Even with that spell, the Reds have only begun 21 league matches under Klopp in that formation though ( [per Football Lineups](https://www.football-lineups.com/team/Liverpool/FA_Premier_League_2022-2023/fixture)). [against Napoli](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/liverpool-napoli-luis-diaz-thiago-24959087). This just leaves a question over who would take the Steven Gerrard role in the centre of the three. Liverpool have won 25 of the 31 matches in which the current £60m duo has started together in midfield, so they are a logical selection. It might just set them on the right track for the future. Salah and Luis Díaz would take the spots on either side of the attacking trident just behind him. Some Reds fans would no doubt enjoy a return to the so-called heavy metal football of Klopp’s early years in England. Klopp may be better served by looking back further, both into his own career and the Liverpool teams which pre-dated his arrival. The Liverpool manager clarified that he is not intending to rip things up entirely. “David Moyes says #mufc must improve in a number of areas, including passing, creating chances and defending,” it read, and if you’ve got problems with those three aspects of the game then there isn’t much to be positive about. The tweet seems to have since been deleted. When you’ve suffered while the Red Devils dominated English football for two decades, what’s wrong with a little schadenfreude at their relative demise?

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp on UCL thrashing: Opposition 'will be ... (ESPN)

Jurgen Klopp said he needs to "reinvent" his Liverpool team after a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Napoli in their Champions League Group A opener.

"A little bit, it looks like, we have to reinvent ourselves, so it's really a lot of things lacking, not in all games but now. "They scored one penalty and missed another, but the next two goals we served on a plate and we should defend better. "It looks a little bit like we have to reinvent ourselves," Klopp told BT Sport in his postmatch interview. Jurgen Klopp's final year at Borussia Dortmund: What happened? (90min)

Jurgen Klopp's famous Borussia Dortmund side is one of the most iconic teams in ...

While a 0-0 draw with Bayer Leverkusen and a 1-0 defeat to Augsburg was a rough way to start off the second half of the campaign, Dortmund quickly turned things around. A fifth defeat on the bounce - a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich - kicked off November. "Maybe it would have been better if we had replaced the entire team - and not the coach," he wrote. It was unconventional, but it did spark the team into life. Klopp had vowed to 'put things right' against Schalke but it was arguably the poorest showing of the season so far. For me, this is a phase as a coach in which I simply have to work harder." Importantly, however, fans remained committed to the boss. That result came after Dortmund enjoyed a summer of seven wins and one draw from their nine pre-season friendlies - the only defeat coming in a 4-0 thumping by Liverpool. "I think it's completely normal for questions to be asked about the attitude of my team. Fingers started to be pointed in October. Jurgen Klopp's famous Borussia Dortmund side is one of the most iconic teams in recent memory. A 3-1 win over Freiburg kicked off the month before things started to take their turn.

Liverpool players set for reality check as Jurgen Klopp's Tottenham ... (Liverpool Echo)

Jurgen Klopp has some big decisions to make ahead of Liverpool's next Premier League match following Wednesday's Champions League disappointment.

The Reds’ season reached a low point when losing 4-1 to Spurs, though it also proved to be a turning point. Sometimes the obvious mistakes are the easiest to fix but it’s not the moment to say we will fix it; we have to prove we will fix it. Players’ positions within the team must now be at risk ahead of Wolves’ trip to Anfield this weekend, and it’s down to Klopp to send out a statement to those who are playing as though they are under no threat. “In all the decisive moments, we were not there. That such talented individuals have endured the slowest of starts to the season, having each set sky-high standards in recent years, is a major concern that will only continue to grow as below-par performances continue. The first goal would not happen if I’m on the pitch. “It’s an open race and about who shows me they want to play,” said Klopp when questioned on how he would approach a home clash with Huddersfield Town following Spurs’ triumph. I don’t give any position to any player in this moment. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk looked off the pace once again during the current campaign, with Luis Diaz one of the few players to come out of the game with any credit. Such was the nature of the lack of organisation on show and discontent of [Klopp](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/jurgen-klopp), Dejan Lovren was hooked after only 31 minutes played and replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He added: “I don’t like situations like this, but it is like this. [Serious questions were asked of Liverpool’s capabilities to challenge for the top four after this result](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-served-up-most-shambolic-13797861), with doubts even being cast over Klopp’s long-term future by some.

Klopp may see now as the right time for a switch up in the final third, and Darwin Nunez now being available provides the manager with the opportunity to drop those who are yet to fire. Liverpool went into this one having won their first three matches of the season, looking to retain their league title. This match came days after the Reds had been crowned league champions for the first time in 30 years. The most forgivable 4-0 defeat in Liverpool’s history? Liverpool need to 'reinvent' themselves - so how does Jurgen Klopp ... (The Independent)

Klopp must pick his side up after the 4-1 evisceration against Napoli, which was the worst result of an already hugely disappointing start to the season.

[Mohamed Salah](/topic/mohamed-salah), [Roberto Firmino](/topic/roberto-firmino) and Mane – or, more recently, the Egyptian, the Senegalese and [Luis Diaz](/topic/luis-diaz) – continues. Now a short-term fix entails more acute decision-making, with the improvement in defence and midfield Matip and Thiago may offer, along with the restoration of the intensity that enabled them to start with a flourish, not begin on the back foot. [Thiago Alcantara](/topic/thiago-alcantara)’s reputation as a passer precedes him, but he was Liverpool’s tackler in chief against Napoli: in his half-hour cameo, he made six tackles, more than the three midfielders and two full-backs who started mustered between them. In the immediate future, [Joel Matip](/topic/joel-matip) may be a more reassuring presence against goal-shy Wolves. If either the message or the messenger is stale, reinvention becomes tougher. [Liverpool](/topic/liverpool-fc), the sight of [Wolves](/topic/wolverhampton-wanderers) on Saturday may be a reminder of the better kind. [a defeat at Old Trafford,](/tv/premier-league/liverpool-premier-league-manchester-united-b2151117.html) there was nothing comparable with the trauma in Naples. More than anyone else, Wijnaldum made Liverpool compact and Klopp had never seen them less compact than they were on Wednesday. Klopp has conjured many a memorable phrase over the years. Now they have an unwanted reminder that there is a different kind of despair. With 97 points in 2018-19 and 92 last year, Liverpool fell short by one on each occasion. [Jurgen Klopp](/topic/jurgen-klopp)’s team won both games, and in vain.

Why Liverpool fans fear Jurgen Klopp's 'seven-year curse' is ... (iNews)

Klopp's previous history at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund does not bode well for Liverpool's revival after the 4-1 defeat to Napoli.

“This club deserves to be coached by someone who is 100 per cent the right person for the job, and a decision had to be made,” he said in 2015. That is the logic that suggests Klopp is here to stay for now, barring catastrophe. I’m not tired and I have no plans to take a sabbatical, but likewise I have no plans arranged with other clubs either, nothing at all.” At the time his exit was confirmed, with six games left to play, Dortmund were languishing in 10th. At that point, it was inconceivable that within a year they would be on the brink of a historic quadruple. At Dortmund, the departure of Robert Lewandowski, with scored 71 goals in 131 appearances, was the tipping point, strengthening Bayern beyond reach and simultaneously decimating Dortmund’s hopes of keeping pace.
