Miami school board members passed a similar resolution acknowledging LGBTQ history month in 2021 by a 7-1 vote.

They said that “LGBTQ history is American history” and it would help students be better allies to their peers. They said it was a “sleazy” way to circumvent Florida’s parental rights law. These guides are used to help support LGBTQ students and offer guidance to teachers on how to handle such issues. Other school districts have reviewed LGBTQ student support guides in response to the law. Pita Mendez, the board’s student adviser, spoke in favor of the item, despite feeling scared to share how she felt and what she believed in after listening to the multiple hours of public comment. In speaking to the Herald, he said passing the measure is “a Trojan Horse.” His friend, who wouldn’t provide his name, said talking about the law equates to child abuse. Those opposed to the law say it could potentially restrict such instruction for older kids and have called it the “Don’t say gay” bill. Wednesday, nearly six hours after the discussion first began — with a nearly one-hour break to hear about the district’s $7 billion budget in between — the Board finally voted. Some, however, falsely claimed that the measure would adopt new curriculum for students to learn about LGBTQ+ issues. The vote brought out droves of parents, teachers and students — along with a contingent of Proud Boys, who got in a loud argument with a person hoisting a trans flag outside the School Board headquarters at 1450 NE Second Ave.

Ron DeSantis, the law has become a political lightning rod and target of Democrats amid the larger debate over LGBTQ rights, especially for schoolchildren. It has made some inroads with women and, to a lesser extent, gay Americans. The Florida law, officially called Parental Rights in Education, bars teachers from referencing sexual orientation or gender identity to their students between kindergarten and third grade, among other things. The move would have updated the Army's so-called compassionate reassignment policy -- typically reserved for troops to transfer bases in cases of family or health emergencies -- to allow soldiers to transfer to a new state if laws discriminate against them based on sex, religion, gender or pregnancy.
