If you haven’t been following the controversy, trolls (the internet kind not the fantasy kind) have been coming after Prime Video’s new “Lord of the Rings” series, not for any narrative shortcomings or wonky visual effects (which totally would have been fair game) but because they feel that the diverse cast, including a Black elf, somehow undermines J.R.R. A similar attack, only this time more misogynist than racist, is being leveled against Marvel Studios’ “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” with fanboys mad that the company is focusing so much on female superheroes. The cast of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy were famously close, even getting matching tattoos before the end of production.

'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power': Every Episode 2 Easter ... (Collider.com)

Dwarven artifacts, Celebrimbor's tower, and what is in that box?! We break down the Easter eggs found in Episode 2 of The Rings of Power.

The appeal of the original books and Tolkien’s created world has provided a fertile ground for exploration and inspiration for nearly a hundred years, and if The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is to be any measure, that world will continue to do so for many years to come. Aulë is the Valar who created the dwarves in the early years of the First Age and is considered the "Father of the Dwarves," so it would be natural to have a reference to Aulë in common Dwarven parlance. A replica of the helm for the dwarves would also be appropriate, however, as it was made by the dwarf smith Telchar and made to be worn by a dwarf. The moon is another element significant to Tolkien’s dwarves, as the Dwarven New Year starts on Durin’s Day, which is the last cycle of the moon in Autumn when the moon and sun are together in the sky. Another expression that hints at the depth of Dwarven culture is seen in the various moon references sprinkled throughout the dialogue in the Khazad-dûm scenes. The dwarven association with ravens is one of the older parts of Tolkien’s legendarium, with the dwarves in The Hobbit and elsewhere having a form of communication with ravens, receiving and sending messages with them, and even being counseled by them. The building of the forge must be for the project that will eventually create the Rings of Power, and the “dragon fire” reference recalls a statement from the books: when discussing how to destroy the One Ring, it is said that dragon fire was able to melt the Rings of Power, but it would likely not work on the One at all. [fun and entertaining sequences](https://collider.com/lord-of-the-rings-the-rings-of-power-value-of-whimsy-in-fantasy/) in the series so far, it is not explicitly found in any of Tolkien's work. One of the delightful results of the focus on Khazad-dûm in the second episode was the fact that it was allowed to explore the intricacies of Dwarven culture. [Celebrimbor](https://collider.com/the-rings-of-power-celebrimbor-explained/) (Charles Edwards), one of the design elements of the hammer is particularly interesting: jewels of various colors are set into the haft; they could simply be ornamental, but they might also be a reference to one of the other notable creations of Fëanor: the Palantíri. It may also be Taniquetil, the holy mountain of the Valar in Valinor. The mountain pattern could represent the ones over Khazad-dûm, or it could of course be a reference to Mount Doom.

The Rings of Power is suffering a racist backlash for casting actors of ... (The Conversation AU)

Recently, the cast of The Rings of Power announced a statement of solidarity against the relentless racist abuse against actors of colour on the show.

Lewis wrote a review in 1955 of Lord of the Rings that reported some readers “imagine they have seen a rigid demarcation between black and white people” draw along clear moral lines. "Good” species and races in Middle-Earth are constructed through references to European cultures (especially northwestern Europe), and the “bad” races are constructed through orientalist stereotypes. They were already there, constructed through out-dated (even for Tolkien’s time) concepts of racial difference among humans and false stereotypes about real peoples. They are also at odds with racism and fascism which see “others” as not only different but inferior, dangerous, not to be trusted, that is, as enemies. There is no such evidence for Orcs even though he wrestled with the moral problem of a purely “evil” species of beings. There is, however, more to the world and stories he created. Given Lewis was Tolkien’s friend, it’s not surprising that he defended the books. She is very anchored in the soil, as opposed to the elves who are very upright and sort of float in the air.” The actress fell in love with every element that put her in the world. Whether it’s her persistent drive to help the people of Iran or bring more multidimensional characters to the screen, the desire to bring about change has been a consistent through line for most of Boniadi’s life. So I wanted to base everything that Bronwyn does from a place of love—her love of her people, her love for her son, her love for the elf—and a desire to overcome as opposed to ‘I’m going to show you. “She reminds me a little bit of the Renée Zellweger character in Cold Mountain,” she describes. She’s also quite proud of her stunt work in the show, which includes a particularly badass scene with her on-screen son in episode two. “It’s really important to have that sense of purpose as a character,” she says. To fully embody a healer, the actress approached production about taking up gardening and participating in different workshops to learn how to mix herbs. As an activist, you can be driven by one of two things: The desire for justice can come from a place of vengeance … or it can come from a place of love for the disenfranchised. When a career in the medical field seemed all but certain, she pivoted to the performing arts, much to her parents’ chagrin. Boniadi waited out the early days of the pandemic back home in Los Angeles before being called back to New Zealand in August, where she would stay until filming wrapped in July 2021. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - Episode 3 Review - IGN (IGN)

Like the drama caused in Episode 2 by Elrond simply forgetting that 20 years is a long time for non-elves, Episode 3 drives home how immortality changes your ...

Númenor is reminiscent of both the majesty of Gondor and The Wheel of Time’s Tar Valon, while somehow exceeding both in its detail and grandeur. While the jury is still out on who this mysterious character will end up being, I’m fairly convinced this is a very addled Gandalf sent to help Middle-earth in the coming crisis and his connection with the Harfoots will later explain his enduring soft spot for the Hobbits. Episode 3 also delivers the show’s most spectacular fight to date in the elven escape plan. The cinematographers also do a fantastic job of blending majestic sweeping shots of the landscape with dramatic closeups. Arondir is in an awful situation this episode, taken captive by the orcs along with the rest of his squad and forced to help them dig the tunnels they’re using to avoid sunlight. Not that the elves are capable of standing against that creeping darkness alone. It seems that Galadriel has found an early Aragorn, a human king fleeing the responsibilities of rulership that she needs to push to rise to the occasion. On one hand, it seems to be portraying them as arrogant colonizers pulling humans into their wars and magnanimously rewarding those who side with them while subjecting those who don’t to generations of surveillance. This time, it’s Galadriel who is surprised how much Númenor has changed in the centuries since the Valar raised it from the sea to reward the humans who fought against Morgoth. Halbrand, though, may be more rogue than ranger – like Aragon, he’s running from the failings of his forebears, who in this case served Morgoth. Episode 3 picks up almost exactly where the previous installment left off with Galadriel waking up on a boat and wondering if she’s been saved or just thrown into an even worse situation than being shipwrecked. It’s a shame we don’t get any more Elrond — aside from seeing him in portrait form in the library of Númenor — but we are introduced to his future brother-in-arms Isildur along with the founder of Gondor’s whole family.

'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power': Every Damned Spoiler (Collider.com)

After all, it's hard to remember who the Valar were, why the elves went to war with Morgoth during the First Age, and where were all the kingdoms destroyed ...

One of the most thrilling moments of Episode 2 of Prime Video’s The Rings of Power is the rock-breaking competition between Elrond and Durin IV. And, most importantly, what happened to the Silmarils before the events of Prime Video’s The Rings of Power? And where is Morgoth during the events of The Rings of Power? That’s why we’ve prepared a handy list of all the Easter eggs you might have missed in Episode 1 of The Rings of Power. Why didn’t we hear about it in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy? In Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, Galadriel is motivated to hunt Sauron due to her brother’s murder by the hands of the villain. While Sauron is the main villain of Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, he is not the first enemy to threaten Middle-earth with destruction. One of the most powerful Elf leaders in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy was Elrond, ruler of Rivendell. And why did he decide to create the Rings of Power? But who were the people who wore the Rings of Power for the first time? One of the most stunning locations of The Rings of Power are the Sundering Seas, an ocean that extends beyond the horizon and that’s home to dangerous creatures. What does it mean that The Rings of Power is placed on the Second Age of Middle-earth?

What is Numenor in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? (Polygon)

The Lord of the Rings' prequel goes to Numenor in the third episode, marking the first time the city has appeared on screen and not just in Tolkien ...

Eru Ilúvatar wipes out the Númenórean fleet along with the entire kingdom, in a cataclysmic event of literally world-changing proportions (we’re talking moving from flat earth to round earth here). If nothing else, episode 3’s characterization of Tar-Palantir as someone still faithful to the Valar and sympathetic to the elves is bang on the money. So, how come we don’t visit Númenor in The Lord of the Rings? Of course, there’s a chance that Míriel is only pretending to cozy up to Pharazôn in the show, but for now, that whole subplot is veering very off-book. [Galadriel](https://www.polygon.com/23327568/galadriel-the-rings-of-power-actor-lord-of-the-rings) notes in “Adar,” the westernmost point of Middle-earth. Twenty-four monarchs sat on the throne of Númenor between Elros’ death and the events of the show, although this is one area where the adaptation begins to take major liberties with the canon established by Tolkien. So, when Galadriel gives the elves the credit for the kingdom even existing in The Rings of Power episode 3, there’s a kernel of truth to what she’s saying. There’s also very little in Tolkien’s writings to suggest that Tar-Míriel (to use her regnal name) was in cahoots with the treacherous Pharazôn (her cousin in the books), especially considering he forced her to marry him to usurp the throne. Indeed, much of the run time of the [Prime Video](https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Power-Season-Reveal/dp/B09QH98YG1/?tag=polygon05-20) series’ third episode, “Adar,” is spent on the island kingdom, which — despite its legendary status — never actually appears in either J.R.R. [being so close to Valinor](https://www.polygon.com/23331177/rings-power-galadriel-jumps-boat-episode-1-ending-lord-rings-explained). For starters, there’s the origin of the island itself, which was custom-made by the Valar for the ancient race of men who joined forces with the elves in war against Morgoth. Tolkien’s original trilogy or the [Peter Jackson movies](https://www.polygon.com/year-of-the-ring) it inspired.
