Coogler's film stands as one of the very few MCU installments that can bring tears to the eyes, be it for the triumph of T'Challa's resurrection or the memory of the dearly missed Chadwick Boseman. With that being said, there are some budgets that make a $100 million price tag look like spare change.

Even though he barely moved the hammer from the coffee table in Avengers: Age of Ultron, we’re expected to trust that everything that Cap has gone through between then and this final stand against Thanos was enough to tip the scales in his favor. That same movie also makes a point to show that Thor is still worthy, even when he feels his lowest, by having him bring Mjölnir back from the past briefly. Throughout Thor, we see the titular God of Thunder struggle to shed his cocky and entitled attitude. Mjölnir has had three people wield its power in the history of the MCU – Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), and now Dr. This isn’t to argue that Rogers and Thor weren’t worthy or deserving of that power in these moments, but rather to ask why Jane had to have that extra caveat in order for us to believe she is worthy of the hammer? It's the fourth solo film featuring [Chris Hemsworth's](https://ew.com/person/chris-hemsworth/) hammer-wielding hero, and it's the second from Oscar winner [Taika Waititi,](https://ew.com/person/taika-waititi/) who previously directed Thor: Ragnarok. Eventually, they find themselves targeted by the nefarious Gorr the God Butcher, played by one [Christian Bale](https://ew.com/person/christian-bale/) in very creepy makeup. [Thor: Love and Thunder](https://ew.com/creative-work/thor-love-and-thunder/) set to begin streaming Sept. "That's the question we ask everyone: Are we doing the right thing, and are we doing all we can in the world? The result is a film that's part epic space opera, part buddy adventure comedy, and part rom-com. Love and Thunder picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and at this point, Thor has lost his eye, his hammer, both his parents, his brother, all of Asgard, and most of his Avengers colleagues. That's where Bale's villain, Gorr the God Butcher, was first introduced.

One of the complaints about Thor: Love and Thunder upon its release was that some scenes involving visions of Axl, Heimdall's son.

(Anyone else tired of the self-aware joke’s-on-us bullshit?) He tosses in G’n’R’s biggest jukebox hits in an attempt to beef up frequent and unspectacular displays of CGI-heavy action. (Well, maybe Love and Thunder brings to mind the 1981 Clash of the Titans, but only fleetingly.) And so, the Thor movies, ranked: He opens with a stark and haunting villain origin, then slams headlong into uptempo action-comedy followed by a somber meditation on mortality followed by more cartoonish action followed by the interminable Omnipotence City sequence, which is so grating and obnoxious and extraneous, it can’t even be saved by Crowe letting ’er rip, and all but begs to be exterminated. But the herky-jerky narrative feels half-considered, and makes us feel like we’re trying to dance to an odd time signature. This could’ve been a buoyant, welcome diversion from the usual MCU grind. His good ol’ hammer Mjolnir sits shattered Earthside, in New Asgard, and he’s out with his new inanimate hammer pal, Stormbreaker, having space adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Much can be said for Hemsworth’s underrated comic timing, when he has decent material, and a character who isn’t two or three scintillas away from wearing out his welcome. Suddenly the Necrosword is in his hand so he stabs his god in the throat, then declares himself Gorr the God Butcher. Thor’s fighting some of Gorr’s shadow monsters when a Jane version of Thor shows up, Mjolnir in hand. He has a braid in his hair and he’s all upbeat but he’s also still capable of violent fighting, and it all is probably masking the pain he feels after the death of his father, mother, brother, buddy and, actually, his entire home planet. In the comics and [Norse mythology](https://www.lifeinnorway.net/valkyries/), the Valkyries guide those who fall in battle in Valhalla, so their MCU counterparts may have gone on to serve a similar purpose -- Jane could ultimately join their ranks. That suggests the regular version of the character remained in isolation, so he may not have made it to Valhalla after all. Since the OG Loki was killed in battle, he should've been rewarded with a blissful eternity in Valhalla. After that, he lived in solitude on a remote planet "for a long, long time." He also reunites with former flame Jane Foster ( [Natalie Portman](/culture/entertainment/thor-4-to-star-natalie-portman-as-lady-thor-is-titled-thor-love-and-thunder-comic-con-2019/)), who's been empowered by his old hammer Mjolnir and become the Mighty Thor, as they face the creepy threat of Gorr the God Butcher ( [Christian Bale](/culture/entertainment/thor-love-and-thunder-new-trailer-with-christian-bale-villain-gorr/)). [Norse mythology](https://www.britannica.com/topic/Valhalla-Norse-mythology), was mentioned earlier in the movie. "You are very welcome here in the land of the gods," he says warmly. However, MCU post-credits scenes typically serve to set up future plotlines and Jane's comic counterpart became a Valkyrie after her time as Mighty Thor concluded. The heroic duo succeeded in convincing Gorr to abandon his genocidal campaign, but she lost her battle with the disease shortly afterward. Since the movies and shows regularly riff on classic comic stories, it's possible Hercules will team up with Kang in his quest to take down Thor. He's shown up regularly in the decades since his debut, occasionally starring in his own series.

If this is the end of the actors' journeys in the The director [has expressed interest in coming back for a fifth installment](https://thedirect.com/article/thor-5-taika-waititi-return) in the series, but only if Hemsworth would be returning as well. There’s a lot of good energy on the set. Now that the film has been released on Disney+, the actors have been able to reflect on their cameos, and it seems like all three greatly enjoyed their time on set. One element of Ragnarok that became a talking point amongst fans was the cameos of Matt Damon and Luke Hemsworth.
