Several people were injured in a stampede at the gate of the Nairobi stadium where Ruto was inaugurated as president.

Ruto narrowly won the August 9 election in East Africa’s most stable democracy over long-time opposition figure Raila Odinga. There were no reports of deaths. Scores of people were injured during a stampede as Kenyans forced their way into a stadium where William Ruto was inaugurated as president on Tuesday.

Ruto also seemed to have mended fences with his former boss, outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta, asking him to keep leading talks on regional crises.

The losing candidate, 77-year-old Odinga, is setting himself up to be a prominent opposition voice once again after being backed by former rival Kenyatta in the election. The August election was calm in a country with a history of political violence. His presidential flag features a wheelbarrow, the symbol of his campaign. "I was beaten by the police after trying to get inside," said a witness, Benson Kimutai. Ruto, who had dropped to his knees in tears and prayer when the court upheld his win, knelt on the stage minutes after his swearing-in during an extended sermon. On Tuesday, the audience cheered as the two shook hands, and again as Kenyatta handed over the instruments of power.

Mr Ruto hailed it as "a moment like no other", adding that a "village boy" had become president. Defeated candidate Raila Odinga did not attend. He said he ...

I want to thank God because a village boy has become the president of Kenya," Mr Ruto said, referring to the fact that he grew up in rural Kenya. Mr Kenyatta has stepped down at the end of his two terms. In a statement, Mr Odinga said he had received a call from Mr Ruto inviting him to the inauguration, but that he would not attend as he was abroad and he did not believe the election was free and fair. Mr Kenyatta said he was committed to a peaceful transition and urged the new president to serve all Kenyans. Mr Ruto - the former deputy president - was handed a copy of Kenya's constitution and a sword to represent the transfer of power from President Uhuru Kenyatta. Mr Ruto won the election with 50.5% of the vote, to Mr Odinga's 48.8%.

President Ruto said his government is keen on advancing regional integration, trade and peace, continuing on the precedent of his predecessors.

Mr Kenyatta was also actively involved in halting escalating tensions between Sudan and Ethiopia earlier this year. He hosted the EAC heads of State in April to address the DRC conflict and led efforts to bring the rebels and Kinshasa to the table for dialogue. He added that Kenya would “continue to be a dedicated partner to peace, security and prosperity in the East African region,” commending President Kenyatta’s role in steering peace talks in the region during his term in office.

“These resources will support the bottom-up scaling of justice by increasing the number of small claims courts from the current 25 to 100. There are at least 25 small claims courts, 34 High Courts and 123 magistrate courts. Give us a development vote of about Sh5 billion a year and we will construct courts all over the country in 10 years,” said the former CJ. Out of a budget of about Sh3 trillion, give us just 2.5 per cent and we will dispose of cases within two years of their filing. We will also work with the judiciary to build High Courts in the remaining seven counties and magistrates courts in the remaining 123 sub-counties and support their ongoing digitization.” [William Ruto](https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/topic/william-ruto) [William Ruto swearing-in](https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/topic/william-ruto-swearing-in) [Court of Appeal](https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/topic/court-of-appeal) [JSC](https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/topic/jsc) According to the President, the resources will be used to increase the number of small claims courts, magistrates courts, and High Courts. Before President Ruto made his inaugural speech, he recognised heads of State who had attended the ceremony. Others, especially opposition supporters in the country on the southwest coast of West Africa, were amused by what they saw as the ill-treatment of their President Julius Maada Bio by the organisers of the inauguration ceremony. Some people in Sierra Leone are unhappy with the Kenyan presidential inauguration on Tuesday, in which William Ruto took the oath of office as the country's fifth head of State.

The services’ operational autonomy, however, has been undermined by the continued financial dependence on the Office of the President. Small claims courts handle cases valued at less than Sh1 million and were introduced as part of plans to reduce case backlog, which has bogged down the Judiciary over the years.
