"Chelsea is a huge club in transition. You should never rule anything out in football and Chelsea are such a huge club. But you do that again and again with other clubs – that's it. football.london understands that Boehly is keen on a multi-layer type structure which would allow multiple candidates to be employed for numerous similar roles within the footballing remit. We spoke more often a month or two ago because they were interested in [Benjamin] Sesko," he told Sky Sport Austria. Tom Glick has joined from Man City to be the new CEO whilst the other roles are to be filled.

"A murmuring of boos could even be heard around Stamford Bridge on the final whistle after Chelsea squandered the lead that Raheem Sterling had earlier provided and were held at home by the Austrian team FC Salzburg. With most of his squad away on international duty for the next fortnight, there will be precious little time to put things right. It was a night for commemoration - two Chelsea Pensioners laid wreaths for the late Queen, the Bridge sang ‘God Save The King’ despite UEFA refusing an official rendition and, unlike at Anfield, they managed a full minute’s silence. "Todd Boehly, the new Chelsea owner, might be keen on bringing the American All-Star concept to English football but, on this evidence, precious few of his squad will be getting into any fantasy Premier League team. "Not least as Potter is very clearly intended as an expression of the new club culture, whatever that may be. It seems he wants to create something of the multi-club model for Chelsea. No waves, no performative stuff, nothing that really said: “I am actually new here you know.” As grand entrances go this was the managerial equivalent of taking your lunch tray and going to sit at the empty seat down from the teachers. Potter was rather positive after the game on his players' efforts to try and implement what they learned in their first week under his management. [Chelsea took a point at home to RB Salzburg](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/sep/14/chelsea-salzburg-champions-league-match-report) and were solid, room temperature, mildly encouraging in their energy levels. The move which kick-started his coaching career from non-league Leeds Carnegie to Ostersund in Sweden was anything but, summing up the risk-taker element of Potter that so appealed to Chelsea's owners. "Just as intriguingly, Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana, summer signings who have just cost Potter's new employers more than a combined £100million, were on the bench. As grand entrances go, in the long storied history of seizing the stage …
Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo has given his thoughts around Graham Potter's departure to Chelsea and how a move to Stamford Bridge would be something ...
It remains to be seen what the future holds for the young midfielder, but it surely won't be long before the big teams come calling for his signature. "I think they are one of the best teams in the world and nobody would turn down an offer from Chelsea or any other club like that. We'll have to wait and see. Caicedo, a full Ecuador international, has already made 23 appearances for his national team at the age of 20. At Brighton he worked very well and people love him very much. "You never know: today you can be here and tomorrow somewhere else, that’s the job of a footballer and a coach.
Chelsea picked up one point in the second round of the UEFA Champions League group stages as they stay bottom of group E.
I felt we were in control, one chance one goal [for Salzburg] but it's one that, under a new manager [Graham Potter], it'll definitely get better. so as I said, the more time under him [it] will be better for us." It’s a bad result in the end but I thought we played some good football at times. So you know, with time it'll get better. But we've got to finish the job off there. "It was a game that I felt we played really patient, got some chances, I took the chance to put us one up.

Opposition to this model have claimed that it creates a monopoly in football and gives some of the participating teams an unfair advantage. A lack of confidence, stemming from the final days of Tuchel and the deterioration of relationships at the club, is a key issue. But although Potter was also pleased with his side’s “attitude” and “application”, this was a night that ultimately ended in frustration. It has not taken long for that reality at Chelsea to become apparent. It’s already a huge game and even if there are more positives to take from it, there will be pressure on Potter to address Chelsea’s issues and deliver a result. The shape was fluid and there had clearly been some good work that promises much more and hints at further variety. [Raheem Sterling](/topic/raheem-sterling) and [Reece James](/topic/reece-james) were used out wide. Salzburg have this season tended to deploy a narrow midfield diamond and so “It’s not the position we want to be in but we have to respond,” Potter said, answering to the reality he faces now after his step up from Brighton. For Tuchel, at the end, this version of Chelsea was more familiar to him but it is not his problem any longer. Although Chelsea’s position is of course not his own making, one point from six already puts Potter on a bit of a back foot ahead of the doubleheader against AC Milan next month. Potter is only one game into his Chelsea tenure but already, through no fault of his own, finds himself in an interesting situation. Perhaps he would have leaned back, grinning in both frustration and longing, at the memory of when those same players would perform that way for him.

Graham Potter knows Chelsea face an uphill battle to progress into the Champions League knockout stages.
I thought the application of the players and the attitude of the players was fantastic. And if you only have him 40 per cent (of the time) it’s a huge problem.” Kante is closing in on a return and could be fit by the time Chelsea take the field again. Tuchel used a back three and the squad seems built for that formation with an abundance of centre-back and wing-back options. But Potter left over £100 million worth of centre-backs on the bench against Salzburg as Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly were dropped in favour of a centre-back pairing with a combined age of 70 in Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta. Even in the heyday of the Tuchel era when Chelsea won the Champions League in 2021, goals were not free-flowing. Graham Potter got an early indication of the reasons Thomas Tuchel was sacked as Chelsea were held 1-1 by Red Bull Salzburg in the English coach’s debut in the Champions League.
A lot of change has taken place at Chelsea in the last few months and there is more to come.
The prospect of American influence entering the Premier League has seen much criticism levelled at Boehly, characterising him as someone who has not been in the country long and is looking to change the footballing pyramid. Bath was able to present the project to the new owners in a series of meetings, and has since worked closely with Boehly. The new owners are interested in how we do it with young players, how we integrate them into the first team. A potential candidate was in attendance at Stamford Bridge, albeit due to his role with the opposition. Nobody is more synonymous with the Cobham-based academy than Neil Bath, Chelsea's Head of Youth Development, and he appears to have been backed to the hilt. Christoph Freund has already worked within a multi-club structure at Red Bull Salzburg and seen young forwards Erling Haaland and Benjamin Sesko come through the club. Even with this cohesiveness and the arrival of Graham Potter, Chelsea's structure is not yet complete. And for me, the way to do that is through another club in a really competitive league in Europe.” This has already seen the club target non-league more effectively - Mason Burstow spent time on trial while playing for Maidstone United - while this summer has seen players arrive from Southampton, Brighton and Arsenal. [been at the forefront of the mind's of Chelsea's hierarchy](https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/chelsea-todd-boehly-levi-colwill-24201411). That Boehly could think such a scheme was worth mentioning reveals that he sees the game as being primarily about individuals, which perhaps explains why he was so keen to sign Cristiano Ronaldo (and Anthony Gordon and Roméo Lavia) even when they would have been such a poor fit for Tuchel’s system. But what is probably of greater to concern to Potter is what it says about how Boehly regards football and how little he understands it. It’s impractical to the point of unworkability, and the idea that it could generate $200 million for the pyramid laughable (there actually has been a one-off showpiece friendly in English football to raise revenue for charity since 1908, the Community Shield, which is tolerated rather than loved. That’s why international football looks so different to club football; national managers simply don’t have the time to drill their players in complex systems of pressing or sophisticated attacking patterns that we’re used to seeing at the club level. Obviously, I think it’s a bit strange for everybody, not only for me, but as I said, this is football, you have to adapt.” When you play football you have to adapt very quickly to some moments in the season, this can happen. Aubameyang was signed by Tuchel from Barcelona, and previously worked with him at Borussia Dortmund, and admits that events off the field have not been making life easy for him back in London.
Just over 100 days into his tenure at the helm of Chelsea and we've heard far more from Todd Boehly than we did from Roman Abramovich in nearly two decades.
The first is that it's fine to stay silent if everything is rosy, but you have to send a message in times of turmoil, and that message has to be genuine. The other lies in something Boehly himself said: "In the end, you have to deliver a product that people want and value." More to the point, given how American sports fans have been responding to All-Star games (the NFL's version has seen viewership decline since 2011, the NBA's was the lowest since at least 2007 and, in baseball -- Boehly's wheelhouse -- viewership was at a record low and one-fifth of what it was in 1980) maybe the lesson to learn from American sports is that fans don't want this. The mere fact that he's talking is important, no matter his slip-ups and questionable ideas, whether because they're goofy or simply because they're not new (even though he may think they are). The more salient point is that anyone who has followed Chelsea over the past decade will know that the club have actually already been doing that and, in some cases, been criticised for it: from (The biggest concern is fairness, when one team is well ahead of the other in terms of points.) But again, it's not something they need to learn from American sports. Which, by the way, may explain why governing bodies such as UEFA and FIFA haven't seriously cracked down on it or why other top clubs around Europe (other than City) haven't pursued it: Ultimately, it's not clear that it gives you an advantage. The implication, whether it's what he meant to say or not, is that American sports are better at monetising fan experiences, and European football has something to learn from it.
