Princess Charlotte and Prince George attended the funeral of their great grandmother Queen Elizabeth, alongside their mother the Princess of Wales.

It is the first time they have publicly attended a funeral, though they did also appear at a memorial service for Prince Philip in March 2022, after his 2021 funeral was restricted to 30 guests due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the shape of a small horseshoe, the piece of jewelry was no doubt a nod to the queen’s love of horses and equestrianism. Charlotte, for the first time, wore a formal hat—like all other female family members at the service—and her first-ever royal brooch too.

George, second in line to the throne, and his sister, were youngest mourners at Westminster Abbey service.

Here they were in the bosom of their family. George held his arms by his sides and Charlotte clasped her hands in front of her. Their appearance came amid a narrowing of the royal family’s focus on figures at the top of the direct line of succession, overseen by the King. On Sunday, it was reported that George and Charlotte’s presence was suggested by “senior palace advisers”, with an unnamed official saying George’s presence would be desirable “if only to reassure the nation of the order of succession”. The Duke of Sussex, who was 12 at the time, has said: “I don’t think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances.” Charlotte’s presence was a reminder of how the Queen’s reign ended hundreds of years of male primogeniture in the British monarchy.

"If there’s any image that’s going to explain the future of the monarchy and the destiny for William and George, it will be right there and then." The trio then joined the Prince of Wales to form a row of four as they followed the coffin to the front of the abbey. The prince and princess’ four-year-old brother, Prince Louis, was not present as he is likely considered too young to attend. Both children looked down at times as they filed slowly out of the abbey. At the end of the service, George followed closely behind his father, while Kate put a guiding hand on the back of her daughter, as the foursome got up from their seats and stood behind the coffin. As the young royals followed their great grandmother’s coffin, flanked by their parents, Charlotte held her hands clasped in front of her while George had his arms by his side.
