Italy advances in Nations League; England, Germany draw 3-3 (The Washington Post)

Italy advanced to next year's finals tournament in the Nations League by winning at Hungary 2-0 thanks to goals by Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Dimarco.

It was a tough night all around for England’s center backs, with John Stones forced off with a suspected hamstring injury. “We were excellent for 70 minutes, the last 20 I didn’t like too much,” Italy coach Roberto Mancini said. The Manchester United center back was at fault for Germany’s 52nd-minute opener from the spot by Ilkay Gundogan — Maguire initially gave the ball away to Jamal Musiala, then clumsily fouled the teenager in the area moments later — and was then dispossessed in midfield to allow the Germans to break, culminating in a curling finish from the edge of the area by Havertz. Trailing 2-0, England scored three goals in a 12-minute span from the 71st — through Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Kane’s penalty — only for Kai Havertz to pounce on a fumble by England goalkeeper Nick Pope to equalize in the 87th. Unlike Italy, England and Germany will be going to the World Cup in Qatar in less than two months and they’ll head to the Middle East on the back of a wild 3-3 draw at Wembley Stadium, where all the goals were scored in the second half. By topping a group also containing England and Germany, the Italians joined the Netherlands and Croatia in qualifying for the final four, which will be hosted by the Dutch in June.

Italy is all set to have its first far-right government since World War II (West Virginia Public Broadcasting)

Her victory comes at a time when parties with fascist roots are making gains across Europe. We're joined now by NPR's Joanna Kakissis, who's in Rome. Hi, Joanna ...

You know, Italy is a founding member of the European Union, as you mentioned, and Meloni has repeatedly criticized it. You know, they lead illiberal democracies, who are strong critics of the EU. KAKISSIS: So there's a lot of concern in Europe because, you know, Italy is so important to the EU. When she was a teenager, she joined the youth group of a movement founded by Mussolini supporters. Italy has elected a hard-right coalition led by a party that descended from Benito Mussolini's fascist party in the aftermath of World War II. The party's leader, Giorgia Meloni, is set to be Italy's first female prime minister and one that's already rattling the European Union, of which Italy is a founding member.

Italy's next prime minister promises a lot on the campaign trail but the reality of government will prove a shock.

Meloni will have a chance to take a hardline approach on domestic policy and will certainly endeavour to be tougher on migration and on social rights, as her electorate appears to be demanding. While the electoral results established her as the clear head of the coalition, a lack of expertise and experience will make populating ministerial posts a challenge. By staying outside of the coalition, Meloni gave herself the opportunity to freely criticise the government and present her party as the only true opposition. Meloni will become prime minister at the head of a coalition – although the make up of that government is yet to be decided. They made a particularly strong showing in the south, thanks to policies of this kind. By February 2021, when former European Central Bank president Mario Draghi was forming a national unity government, 16.5% of the voting public was already saying they intended to vote for Brothers of Italy – the only major political party not supporting Draghi.

Italian elections: Meloni gets to work on picking right-wing government (BBC News)

The leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy has kept out of sight since winning the election.

Her party was born out of a post-war movement rooted in the fascist past of dictator Benito Mussolini. He also warned that nobody would get a job in the new cabinet by planting party flags on seats. A Meloni government would be judged by its actions, he said. She picked her daughter up from school and worked off some stress in the gym. One former League leader, Roberto Maroni, has even suggested it is time for Mr Salvini to stand down. Several European countries have expressed alarm at her victory.

“She will also want to avoid reputational damage by nominating someone who is not perceived as credible by the markets,” she said in a note. Agnese Ortolani, senior Europe analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit, said she expected Meloni “to continue to reassure the markets by picking a non-controversial figure for the role of finance minister”. EU economy commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said he urged “the next Italian government to ensure that this opportunity is seized”, saying it was key to putting Italy on a path to “strong and durable growth”.
