71 mins: Mead gets round the back and pulls the ball back to Wienroither who miscues her shot. It is worked short to Spitse who curls in a deeper cross under the crossbar but the goalkeeper claims easily. The balls reaches Mead but she takes her time and the chance is gone. That’s the breakthrough Arsenal have been hoping for. Foord gets into the box but is then forced backwards from inside the six-yard box. 73 mins: HOW DOES IT NOT GO IN?!! Everything is being done at a snail’s pace. Mead is still down and looks in a lot of pain. I personally do not think it was a deliberate but Doorn has caught Mead on the side of the face. Arsenal are unhappy with the clash. 90 mins: Doorn is booked for fouling Mead there. Her Arsenal teammates rush over to her and get her onto her side.

Of course, it’s so nice of the club that they want to play that in the best stadium as well, the Emirates. At half time Ajax easily looked the better side, but Jonas Eidevall rallied his players and they took control of the second half. The Gunners may be nearly invincible at home in the WSL despite the undoubted quality of opposition, having not lost at home since Feb 2021, but last week in the Champions League Qualifier against Ajax they got a shock.

Arsenal Women progress to the group stage of the Champions League after defeating Ajax Vrouwen 3-2 on aggregate in the second qualifying round.

[Lotte Wubben-Moy](/people/lotte-wubben-moy/) replaced the Brazilian newcomer as Arsenal regrouped at half time, and it only took six minutes of the second period for Miedema to put the North London club in the ascendancy. [Beth Mead](/people/beth-mead/) only considered for a spot on the bench after her North London derby exploits, the first half was largely devoid of attacking quality at both ends of the pitch. [Jonas Eidevall](/people/jonas-eidevall/)'s side were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw in the first leg at Borehamwood, but a second-half strike from [Vivianne Miedema](/people/vivianne-miedema/) got the job done in a 1-0 second-leg success in Amsterdam.

Arsenal booked their spot in the group stages of the Women's Champions League with a 1-0 win at Ajax.

The Gunners put in an acomplished display in stormy conditions in the Dutch capital and could have led in the opening 20 minutes but Stina Blackstenius shot straight at the Ajax goalkeeper. The Gunners had a scare in the final 20 minutes when Tiny Hoekstra stabbed wide from close range after good work by Nadine Noordam. I said, “football is so fast, maybe today is the day you come on and make a difference, you never know, you have to prepare for the opportunity.” She does that and i think you saw that today in her performance. At the moment, Leah and Rafa is the best partnership we have but Lotte is the best she has ever been in my time here. We knew the game was going to open up more in the second half and it did. Now we need to integrate more players on the pitch over the coming months, those players will get their chance. We gave the players extra time off over the summer because we knew we had a tough start. The problem that I have is that I asked the fourth official if we can do a concussion sub and she says ‘yes.’ Then when we are preparing Lina and when we are about to do it she says ‘no.’ We had a break for 2-3 minutes while Beth was treated, we would have been talking about how to play with ten. Beth is a great player but I think when I see how the game turned out and how we managed it, I am happy with the decision. They are so harsh on penalising it because it’s not only pain, that can have impact for the rest of your life. I think UEFA removed the concussion sub, they still have the concussion protocol but the doctor makes the decision. We are very much in control of our emotions, with what has been allowed against us I am not surprised that we come out with two injuries (to Rafaelle and Beth Mead). It has been a weird experience coming here and playing a big club like Ajax and we have to measure the goals and it turned out they were 10cm too small. A second half goal from Vivianne Miedema gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening and a 3-2 aggregate victory that takes them into the Champions League group stage.

That misinformation from the referee, I don’t understand it." Eidevall said it was a "weird experience" with the goalpost controversy, and he also questioned how referees handled a head injury to Beth Mead, who was not allowed a concussion substitute. "I have never experienced anything like it."

[@ArsenalWFC]- through to the Champions League group stages with games to be held at the Emirates. Raised a few eyebrows after being dropped to the bench by Jonas Eidevall, but came on for the final 25 minutes- what a player to have up your sleeve. Left out of the Lionesses squad announced by Sarina Wiegman yesterday, with the Dutchwoman watching on from the stands in Amsterdam. Once again linked up well with Steph Catley down the left- the two Aussies have an almost telepathic relationship in both attack and defence. Played a crucial role in defending Arsenal’s lead and seeing the Gunners through to the group stage. Picked up an injury midway through the first half and had to be withdrawn after [a very impressive] 38 minutes.

It is here that Arsenal decided to use Lina Hurtig as a concussion sub which was disallowed by the fourth official, leaving the Swedish manager fuming. However, a goal from Vivianne Miedema just after half time sealed the deal for the North London club currently on top of the WSL points table. The incident occured shortly before kick off and resulted in the change of posts ahead of the match.

Ajax Vrouwen 0 - 1 Women - Match Report (Arsenal.com)

Despite relentless rain and a belligerent Ajax side, we secured Champions League football for a second successive year.

With Champions League football now secured for the season, many of our players are off for a short international break in October. Mead was then taken off owing to concussion protocols, and we played out the final few minutes of the game valiantly with ten players on the pitch. Some very neat interplay at the edge of our box did force a great save from Zinsberger, and Wubben-Moy was on hand at the back post to clear the danger.
