Diwali 2022: Why you should light 13 diyas during Diwali? Know its ... (Hindustan Times)

Diwali 2022: Lighting diyas on Diwali is one of the primary customs. Check out the significance of lighting 13 diyas during Diwali.

The sixth diya is traditionally placed beneath a peepal tree since it is considered lucky and should be lit with mustard oil. On Dhanteras, in the presence of the entire family, 13 old or used clay diyas are to be lit and kept facing south near trash outside the house to ward off death. In front of the holy basil plant, referred to as Tulsi in India, the fourth earthen lamp should be set up. The family that lives in your home will be at peace and happy as a result of doing this. According to Hindu mythology, it is thought that there are 13 diyas that one must light in their house and pray for good health and prosperity during Diwali and Dhanteras. The family is protected from untimely death by the first diya. It signifies recovery from both financial and health problems. Check out the significance of lighting 13 diyas during Diwali. The twelfth diya is placed on the top floor of your home which is beneficial to your health. Diwali in the UK: how commodifying minority religions can risk ... (The Conversation UK)

Retailers run the risk of cultural appropriation when they commodify festivals from minority groups without acknowledging the religious context.

There is something genuinely appealing about seeing the festivals and traditions of minority religions explored by retailers in creative and innovative ways. And the sharing of minority cultures through food, dress, and music does contribute to consumer tastes diversifying. The commercial potential of Diwali is capturing the attention of the high street. Diwali is important economically, both within both the Indian subcontinent and Hindu diaspora communities. People prepare for the arrival of the goddess by cleaning their homes and donning new clothes. But little, if any, mention is being made of the festival’s religious nature, and that’s a problem.
