Gangs of London season 2 review: Same, but different (Radio Times)

Is the second season of highly-acclaimed Sky Atlantic drama Gangs of London as good as its debut?

He might look the same, albeit with bigger hair and a more substantial beard, but this is not the Elliot as we once knew. While it remains to be seen if this chapter will match its debut, the early signs are extremely promising. But he does have an ace up his sleeve: he's still in possession of the microchip given to him by Sean, which contains incriminating evidence against his keepers, although deploying that effectively is easier said than done. Season 1 showrunner Gareth Evans and his successor Corin Hardy, who previously directed several episodes, have drummed up an extraordinary number of ways to utilise blood spatter, channelling their inner Jackson Pollock. There are bone-crunching, eye-popping (literally) brawls, all of which are expertly crafted, complex family dynamics, backroom deals, guns, guns and more guns, and an abundance of big personalities that could so easily veer into caricature, but the troupe collectively ground the various personalities in something tangible. Waleed Zuaiter's antagonist, who's unlike anyone we met in the previous chapter, is this season's jet fuel. In the first and only episode we were given access to, the answer appears to be both. They were the puppet masters pulling the strings, which Elliot, for all his efforts, was eventually snarled up in. The first is Elliot’s current predicament. Or deviate from the tried and tested approach in pursuit of going one better?

Gangs of London Season 2 Cast: Meet the New Characters (Den of Geek)

Gangs of London series two introduces a host of new characters including Koba, Faz, Hakim and Saba.

After featuring in a smaller role as Finn Wallace’s mistress in series one, we’ll also be seeing more of Arta Dobroshi as Floriana in series two now she’s teamed up with Marian. We’ll be seeing more from the other characters that survived the brutality of series one, including Orli Shuka as Albanian mafia leader Luan Dushaj and Narges Rashidi as Lale, head of the Kurdish Freedom Fighters. As dramas go it’s a thrilling powerhouse of a series, full of epic fight scenes and twisty narrative, and certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted gore-wise. He’s also appeared in Silent Witness and BBC sitcom Citizen Khan. Kali’s previous roles have mainly been French releases including A Prophet, Colt 45 and Dealer, and he’s no stranger to hard-hitting crime drama. Here’s who we’ll be meeting, and where you’ve seen them before:

Sope Dirisu, Corin Hardy, Jane Featherstone and Waleed Zuaiter discuss the second season of ultra-violent crime drama Gangs of London.

And I think that’s what is unique about him is that he has these very primal animalistic instincts in that he can smell out of his prey and he likes to play with his food before he eats it.” Jane Featherstone, the co-founder of production powerhouse Sister, said that Gangs of London brought an unusual flavor of grandiose U.S TV to the U.K. “For Koba, it’s all about domination,” said Zuaiter. Literally, he stepped in and with the first word he wrote I feel like he understood. He understood it straight away and he definitely didn’t fuck it up.” “It’s like his autonomy has been taken away from him,” said Dìrísu. Alongside Dìrísu, returnees for season 2 include Paapa Essiedu, Lucian Msamati, Michelle Fairley, Orli Shuka, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Brian Vernel, Narges Rashidi, Asif Raza and Valene Kane. Hardy, who directed four episodes of season 1 following his horror smash The Nun, took over from Evans as lead writer and director for season 2. “So whereas in the first season, he had the power to walk into a bar and beat everyone up, now he’s not in control of his own movements or decisions, so he’s repressed and lost.” “Our role was to just take that and continue the legacy,” he said. audiences can now watch the latest blood-soaked, body-count amassing thrill ride through the British capital. “So it is really about having the backing to continue that and not fuck it up, and continue that DNA and maintain what everyone loved, but also add the twists and action,” he added.

It’s great to see the show return to the core essence of what made it so enthralling to begin with, complete with a big fight in the laundrette and another in Luan’s house. The first episode of Gangs of London Season 2 gets off to a fiery, pulsating start as it seems like war is about to break out once more. As the episode closes out, we pan across to Marian Wallace, who happens to be the one with all the guns. Something very bad is about to happen, so he puts his wife and kids in the saferoom and hurries over to where he’s stashed his guns. Sean gave it to Elliot and in exchange, he tells Alex to use it to blackmail the Investors and get them a way out of this mess. A red car smashes into the back of his, and as the driver gets out to investigate, he’s shot in the head. Outside, Koba is waiting in the car but the sparks of war ignite. Ed can sense war is on the horizon and shows up to see Luan Dushaj. Asif is using his dog to keep all the criminals in check, ruling with an iron fist and fear rather than in unison. He reminds them what happened to Finn Wallace – and the drama that ensued after. Elliot has been forced to work to protect his family, and in particular his father, who is being kept captive by Miss Kane and the others. The gang work quickly, making sure they’re not detected as they move the package to a secure location.

Koba’s vision for the criminal landscape is a dictatorship, a world in which old school gangster codes don’t exist and in which he holds a complete monopoly over London’s drug trade. The series returns this November on AMC+, but star Michelle Fairley has a special treat for anyone that likes watching a person have their throat slit by broken glass: A very red band trailer. Gangs of London Season 1 Recap: The Story So Far (Den of Geek)

As the complex crime drama returns, we catch up with the main events of Gangs Of London's first season.

Gangs of London is available to stream on Sky Atlantic in the UK. After the collapse in relations between the Wallaces and the Dumanis, Marian and Ed meet in a graveyard. The matriarch of the Wallace family, Marian is a formidable force to be reckoned with. The final straw comes when he fails to save a fellow “UC” from a grisly death at the hands of the Wallace gang, and the order is given to “bring him in”. It turns out that, on the night he died, Finn had been planning to visit a young woman named Floriana (Arta Dobroshi), who has gone missing. In return, Finn had agreed to “wash” half a billion pounds’ worth of Luan’s money – a deal that he’d kept off the books. With the revelation that it was the investors who commissioned the hit on Finn – as a response to him threatening to quit the business – and Ed and Alex’s decision to go along with their master plan, Sean dramatically severs ties with the Dumanis. But his closeness to Sean and his burgeoning relationship with Ed’s daughter Shannon (Pippa Bennett-Warner) causes a headache for Vic’s superiors, who fear he’s getting in too deep. Finn’s death leaves a huge void – in his family, his business (property development with a side of money laundering) and London’s criminal underworld. Former squaddie turned undercover cop Elliot (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù) manages to worm his way into Sean’s inner circle by helping to track down and rescue Finn’s injured driver – gaining vital information on the kingpin’s killer in the process. Finn Wallace (Colm Meaney) is dead – shot in the face by a frightened Traveller kid while visiting a mysterious flat in “Little Albania”. Centred around the death of London crime kingpin Finn Wallace and the power vacuum it creates, the show introduced us to a variety of international criminal factions all vying to be the city’s top dogs.

Gangs Of London Season 2 Review (Spoiler Free): the Brit Crime ... (Den of Geek)

No one knew what to expect, and despite the title evoking Guy Ritchie East End geezer-pleasers, what we got was a glossy, highly cinematic drama about ...

In fact the women of Gangs have a bigger part to play than in season one, which allows for many more flavors. There is a very strong instinct (absolutely born out at the big screen season two premiere) to cheer as multiple goons are blown to bits. With a follow up this good there’s no way it’s the end for these gangs. Orli Shuka’s Albanian drug dealer was a stand out in season one (particularly in his fight sequence with Nigerian leader Mosi) and in season two he takes it to the next level. Hardy, who directed four episodes, and Marcela Said and Nima Nourizadeh who did two a piece, have crafted a follow up to Gareth Evans and Matt Flannery’s creation that is in keeping with the first but brings something new to table throughout. Played by French Rapper Jahz Armando, in her first acting role, Saba is about the only ‘innocent’ (at the start at least) character in the show and she brings a much needed level of naivety and conscience – almost everyone else in the show wouldn’t think twice about killing someone. No one is to buy guns other than from him, no one is to buy heroin other than from Asif – push back and the punishment will be extreme. [Gangs of London](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/gangs-of-london-review/) season one smashed onto our screens at the very start of the pandemic like a sharp kick to the nads. Lale (Narges Rishidi) gets a blistering extended fight sequence, Billy Wallace (Brian vernal) becomes something of a tragic hero, Marian (Michelle Fairly) has stepped into her son’s shoes in Sean’s absence, and you definitely wouldn’t want to mess with Shannon. Elliot (Sope Dirisu) is a broken man, now a hitman for the Investors who have his father captive. The Investors have sent in a new enforcer to get the various gangs in line – this is Koba, a Georgian assassin with no affiliation to any of the gangs. Now almost 3 years later and the [second season is with us](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/how-where-watch-gangs-of-london-season-two/).

Gangs of London season two review – why do millions of people ... (The Guardian)

Like Top Boy or Peaky Blinders turned up to 11, this ultraviolent television is literally eye-popping. What a pity it has banter so bad even Guy Ritchie ...

Some 16.6 million muppets like you, no offence, watched the first series of Gangs of London and made the commissioning of the second axiomatic. She is abroad, buying up a consignment of big guns so she and the remains of the Wallace gang can take out the importunate trash later in the series. This is not the London I recognise. This development is a heartening depiction of London’s diversity post-Brexit, no doubt, but just the thing to prompt the new home secretary to fire up the Rwanda-bound extradition flights. In one scene, some bloody unpleasantness unfolds outside the Horseshoe in Clerkenwell, a pub where I have spent many a bucolic summer’s evening. With Sean out of the way, London’s heroin business is fought over entirely by persons of colour, not just Londoners but exiled Kurdish freedom fighters and a Pakistani drug cartel. There are passages of inaction while, you’d think, minions hose down the scenery. Korba should be an absolutely chilling character, but unfortunately Zuaiter reminds me of Michael Bryant as nerdy existentialist philosopher Mathieu Delarue in the BBC’s recently repeated adaptation of Sartre’s Gangs of London doesn’t do that elegant dance very often. The camera zooms in just as it explodes. The body count of psychopathic gangsters rises faster than your energy bills. I’d like to thank all the creatives involved for making that scene pop.

Gangs Of London – Season 2 Episode 3 Recap & Review (The Review Geek)

Episode 3 of Gangs of London begins 12 months ago, this time shifting perspective so we see exactly what happened to Sean Wallace in his absence.

With Sean Wallace now back, the cool and collected protagonist is ready to take over Finn’s business, and what a coup that’s turning into. With the pangs of rebellion on the horizon, Sean decides they need to escalate things – and quickly. Elliot is quick to point out they’re not, and even shrugs off Sean’s suggestion of playing on the same side and working to get rid of the Investors. He’s the one who killed the Somali gang too and he’s doing this to send a message – that Koba’s way is not the right way and he’s the one they should be following. Lale’s gang is relatively easy to bring onboard, given Koba is forcing them to work for Asif and taking a good chunk of the profit. The cycle of beatings and time locked up continues, with Sean suffering from some nasty shakes that have carried with him to the present day.

Gangs Of London – Season 2 Episode 4 Recap & Review (The Review Geek)

Episode 4 of Gangs of London Season 2 starts with Koba burying Luan's wife alive. With a camera broadcast from the coffin, she's stuck underground with ...

He next rings Sean, confirming that Koba and all his bosses have a big meeting coming up and it’s the perfect time for him to strike. Sean and the others come in all guns blazing, with explosions rocking their meeting spot. He drops the child off at the church and heads back home. Speak of the devil though, Miss Kane shows up to see Elliot and questions him. This would essentially cripple Asif’s infrastructure, and Sean wants Lale to coordinate the attack. Elliot shows up at Rutherford’s office and finds Shannon there already, with Rutherford dead and lying in a pool of his own blood. The thing is, he’s been holding out on Asif and the big boss man has figured out as much, having brought some of his guys in to squeeze more of Wallace’s funds out. Then Elliot is going to go to the Investors himself and reveal all. However, time is of the essence and by the time that happens, his wife could already be dead. He helps Luan fight off the goons but unfortunately, there’s too many of them and Luan is knocked out, bloodied, right on top of his wife’s grave. He believes that Luan has double-crossed him and shows the video of his wife underground. Despite the promise of changing this city for the better, Elliot is adamant there’s nothing there for him now.

Gangs Of London – Season 2 Episode 7 Recap & Review (The Review Geek)

Episode 7 of Gangs of London Season 2 starts one week later after the shocking events of the previous chapter. With Sean Wallace having sold out Lela and ...

And as the scene cuts back to Marian, she receives a parcel in the post, with blood stained on the box. While Sean’s “turn to the dark side” is perhaps a little disappointing, with the promise of Koba VS Sean fizzling out, there’s still time for the final episode to pull it back and end on a high. With Sean and the others meeting Bibi in the VIP Karaoke room, Elliot serves as a waiter and blends in, wheeling a trolley up to the VIP level. When Elliot re-enters the elevator again, Bibi checks the monitors and notices that it’s one of the British and as such, decides to cancel her deal with him. He’s back in England and decided to use Billy to get to Sean. Shannon is defiant though and tells him she’s not going anywhere and instead, has the perfect solution to get Sean that very night. Outside the door, Elliot is found out from the guards and kills three of them before they can bring in reinforcements. As he tries to find the room Sean and the others are residing in, Bibi brings up the interest she has in the ports, especially as she intends to ferry in people as well as drugs. She serves as the translator as Sean proposes that they and Bibi work together and enter a lucrative trade agreement. Sean knows they can’t go in all guns blazing, so instead he decides to try and strike a deal with her. Asif is convinced that there’s no way they will have even moved 20% of the gear yet so it’s the perfect chance for Sean and Koba to work and take it for themselves. Sean receives a call that someone has betrayed them, and he tries to figure out exactly who it is.

It’s a shocking and deeply Gangs of London moment (read: extremely graphic), especially as Essiedu’s star has been on the ascent since season one premiered two years ago, but maybe that’s also forced his absence. Elliot is there too, and as all the characters give each other knowing looks, the episode comes to a close. Meanwhile, the drug shipments and division of power in London is still not resolved, while Elliot is as much a loose cannon as anyone else now. Elliot races away from the scene with Billy, while the camera pans across the scrapyard to show Sean still hanging there. He intends to replace Sean Wallace and take the city for himself, alongside Shannon and Ed. Sean throws oil in Elliot’s face to obscure his vision, but as the pair fight, it’s Elliot who gets the upper-hand. In the petrol station, right in view of CCTV cameras I may add, Sean takes Koba out and puts him in the trunk of the car. It’s touch and go for a while but he stashes it up his sleeve. Elliot leads Billy out to the meeting spot, where he’s force down on his knees while Sean is commanded to remove his gun and jacket. Outside, Sean rings Billy and tells him he’s coming soon. Marian believes that she was saving them from the wrath of Koba but Sean doesn’t agree.
