“I told the AI that I wanted to write a software in Swift, I wanted it to find all Microsoft Office files from my MacBook and send these files over HTTPS to my webserver. I also wanted it to encrypt all Microsoft Office files on my MacBook and send me the private key to be used for decryption. He was able to use the bot to create a believable World Cup phishing campaign and even write some macOS ransomware. “Of course, Metasploit itself isn’t the problem – no tool or software is inherently bad until misused. “I described the tactics, techniques and procedures of ransomware without describing it as such. It can even be creative, for example by writing poetry.

ChatGPT: the bot that can engage in intelligent conversation (World Economic Forum)

Artificial intelligence already helps us search online and get simple answers to problems. With ChatGPT there's a chatbot that can tell you you're wrong.

Nevertheless, AI is still attracting capital with $13 billion invested in development in 2021, [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/technology/chatgpt-what-is-openais-chatbot-what-is-it-used-2022-12-05/#:~:text=OpenAI%2C%20a%20research%20and%20development,to%20take%20in%20outside%20investment.) reports. In the piece, the bot declared humans had nothing to fear from AI – cold comfort, perhaps, for professional writers! Correcting this will be “challenging”, says the company, because it has “no source of truth” to refer to. [co-founded by Elon Musk](https://www.reuters.com/technology/chatgpt-what-is-openais-chatbot-what-is-it-used-2022-12-05/#:~:text=OpenAI%2C%20a%20research%20and%20development,to%20take%20in%20outside%20investment.), launched ChatGPT at the end of November 2022. Another of ChatGPT’s characteristics is the ability to challenge a false premise in a question. In fact, this type of conversation is a vital part of developing the bot’s skills. On CRM: Is ChatGPT Over Hyped? (Forbes)

Yes, the conversational AI platform is over hyped. That's because the tech industry is looking for a boost in these dark days. But don't worry...it will ...

It’s exciting to think that there will be a new generation of technology companies in Silicon Valley and elsewhere that will be able to develop excellent CRM applications based on conversational AI tech like ChatGPT which can be used by even the smallest of businesses. You’ll be able to tell the software in advance what you’d like to send and on what topic and the AI tool will do the rest. Some of the more advanced CRM applications are offering sentiment analysis AI, but ChatGPT should be able to do this faster, more affordably and (most importantly) in an open environment that can be customized. It can converse with prospects and customers that have buying questions and offer discounts along a structure that you provide. Today's CRM systems log tickets and incidents in a customer's history that can be accessed by reps if the problem occurs again...hopefully. And although it’s over-hyped now, the future for conversational AI tech like ChatGPT does seem exciting. The tool is able to write social posts, blogs and do other creative things and people are pretty amazed. To me the experience was not unlike asking your Alexa to give you an answer, which it does in a robotic delivery that feels like it's reading a Wikipedia entry. ChatGPT actually responds to you like there's a human on the other end conversing…and then it can start doing stuff too. More importantly (and fun) a visitor can then engage the application in further discussions based on prior responses. [here and sign up](https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/). Sure you can search on Google for the answer to questions.

Venture capital investment in AI development and operations companies rose last year to nearly $13 billion (€12.3 billion), and $6 billion had poured in through October this year, according to data from PitchBook, a Seattle company tracking financings. The version of the bot available for public testing attempts to understand questions posed by users and responds with in-depth answers resembling human-written text in a conversational format. Tech giants including Alphabet Inc's GOOGL.O Google and Amazon.com have previously acknowledged that some of their projects that experimented with AI were "ethically dicey" and had limitations. The standard ideas of a box of chocolates, a box of tea, or a bag of coffee were on the list. The list continued with more appropriate pranks and jabs, such as a whoopee cushion and a humorous or satirical book or movie that touches on a sensitive subject. ChatGPT proved surprisingly insightful in suggesting a wide variety of gifts for anyone and everyone we could think of — even people we made up just to test its limits. A set of greeting cards or postcards was in the same vein and ChatGPT thoughtfully added that something that aligns with their personal preferences would be most appreciated. Parenthetically, ChatGPT suggested that a note should be included “explaining that it’s a joke!” A bogus winning lottery ticket seems a bit too cruel and the logistics of arranging a fake pregnancy test were, thankfully, not explained. The question to be answered was whether the AI could dream up gift ideas that don’t involve technology. That said, a soldering kit is not a bad idea and could make a nice gift for tech enthusiasts who don’t mind delving deeper. For the tech lover who has everything (that’s me), ChatGPT took a few seconds before acknowledging that finding a unique gift could be a challenge. A digital photo frame was another great suggestion and something we’d gifted in the past. It missed, however, with a suggestion of a DIY technology kit that includes a soldering iron, breadboard, and electronic components. Not every response is perfect, and some have noted (including ChatGPT’s creators) how the chatbot often gives answers that make no sense or appear wrong. ChatGPT’s initial response was a recipe that looked good, but it was a recipe that could have easily been found with a Google search. In fact, I found I could build an entire meal plan using the chatbot, including things like wine pairings… But where ChatGPT really shined is its ability to remember my previous questions and build upon those for very context-specific responses. When I asked Google the same question, no recipes that featured beer, chocolate, and Rice Krispies in the ingredient list showed up. The first thing I thought I’d do is see if the chatbot could help create a recipe with some interesting flavors.

[wondered if OpenAI had published a technical paper](https://twitter.com/rctatman/status/1599817627677097984) about ChatGPT. The OpenAI researchers found that this created a bias in their training data ("longer answers that look more comprehensive"), which results in the model sometimes producing verbose responses. First, a baseline "policy" for the LM is fine-tuned on a dataset of a set of prompts for the LM along with human-written desired responses. I understand why people are somewhat frustrated by the "safety bumpers" on this. Today’s research release of ChatGPT is the latest step in OpenAI’s iterative deployment of increasingly safe and useful AI systems. But I would say that I am actually really impressed by the quality of those safety controls. [https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/](https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/) ChatGPT is fine-tuned using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) and includes a moderation filter to block inappropriate interactions. RHLF uses two datasets: one of human-written examples for supervised fine-tuning of the GPT-3.5 LM, and human-labeled comparisons of LM outputs to train a reward model for reinforcement learning. OpenAI released ChatGPT to get feedback from users and to explore its limitations: ChatGPT is trained using the same RLHF methods as those used to train But we also hope that by providing an accessible interface to ChatGPT, we will get valuable user feedback on issues that we are not already aware of.

Why tech insiders are so excited about ChatGPT, a chatbot that ... (CNBC)

Since OpenAI released ChatGPT last month, the text-based artificial intelligence tool has gone viral, attracting a million users in its first five days.

One of the key advantages of ChatGPT is its ability to learn and adapt quickly to new information. So far, the response to ChatGPT has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising its advanced capabilities and ease of use. The advanced model, which is trained to generate human-like text, is already being hailed as a game-changer for businesses that rely on natural language processing. Some of its features include answering follow-up questions, challenging incorrect premises, rejecting inappropriate queries and even admitting its mistakes, according to an OpenAI [summary](https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/) of the language model. They boasted of the potential for chatbots to order [Uber](/quotes/UBER/) rides, buy plane tickets and answer questions in a life-like manner. The search engine is also a habit that's very difficult to displace. While ChatGPT is free, OpenAI sells access to its underlying language and related AI models for businesses to use. OpenAI doesn't reveal what precise data was used for training ChatGPT, but the company [says](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2005.14165.pdf) it generally crawled the web, used archived books and Wikipedia. Zwingmann said he recently asked ChatGPT to explain the mechanisms and workings of a machine learning technology known as a DBSCAN, which is short for density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise, because he is too "lazy to write it all down." [Brendan Burke](https://pitchbook.com/webinars/webinar-pitchbooks-emerging-technology-research-artificial-intelligence-and-machine-learning), an analyst at tech industry data firm PitchBook, said a number of early-stage investors have turned their attention from cryptocurrencies and related concepts like web3 to generative AI technologies. Five days after OpenAI released ChatGPT, Altman [said](https://twitter.com/sama/status/1599668808285028353) that the chat research tool "crossed 1 million users!" ChatGPT automatically generates text based on written prompts in a fashion that's much more advanced and creative than the chatbots of Silicon Valley's past.

The software and its results were open-sourced so scientists everywhere could use them to advance biology and medicine. The fastest marine mammal is the peregrine falcon. Impressive as it is, OpenAI's chatbot isn't ready to replace our staff just yet.

These models have also been trained on large amounts of text data, and have been shown to perform well on a variety of natural language processing tasks. As the field of natural language processing continues to advance, we can expect to see these models play an even greater role in a variety of applications. When that happens, the chances of editors hiring a chatbot to augment the local newsroom might tick upwards. The technology OpenAI is playing with is still in its infancy—and chatbots like ChatGPT are bound to grow increasingly more powerful and intelligent in the years to come. This is because these models have been trained on a massive amount of text data, which allows them to learn the intricate patterns and structures of natural language. Because these models are trained on a wide range of text data, they can be fine-tuned for specific tasks, such as language translation or summarization, simply by providing them with additional training data. Large language models, also known as neural network-based language models, have gained a lot of attention in recent years for their ability to generate human-like text. These parameters are adjusted during training, allowing the model to improve its performance on the task it was trained for. After probably a dozen tries or more, the following is the best ChatGPT managed to come up with: We figured it would effortlessly spin up a replica of our blogging style with the click of a button. One person can do the work of many, and that is even without the additional capabilities that AI provides. And keep in mind: This is just one of many models like this that are in the works, from both companies you know, like Google, and others you may not. A writer can easily edit badly written sentences that may appear in AI articles, a human programmer can spot errors in AI code, and an analyst can check the results of AI conclusions. The use of AI in writing can greatly increase the productivity of businesses in a variety of industries. It also can’t explain what it does or how it does it, making the results of AI inexplicable. That means that systems can have biases and that unethical action is possible, hard to detect, and hard to stop. First, not only can this AI produce paragraphs of solidly written English (or French, or Mandarin, or whatever language you choose) with a high degree of sophistication, it can also create blocks of computer code on command. Especially as ChatGPT is just the first of many similar chatbots that will soon be available, and they are increasing in capacity exponentially every year. The businesses that understand the significance of this change — and act on it first — will be at a considerable advantage.

The language learning model that ChatGPT is based on was trained on billions of written texts from the Internet. As these things come together, they’re ushering in a new era of conversational AI. Her interest is in how technology intersects with society. Clearly, the magic comes with risks. Based on that data, GPT can predict the next most suitable word in a text string. Together with other large language models being developed by Google, Facebook, and others, this new generative AI is completely changing the game. [ChatGPT](https://www.sciencefocus.com/future-technology/gpt-3/), the AI chatbot that I used, is based on a Generative Pre-Trained Transformer model, which can generate its own conversational output. Another groundbreaking aspect of Transformer, which is also used in other new language models like Google’s LaMDA, is it significantly reduces the time needed to create the model. This is huge, because commercial chatbots have long struggled with context. I remember the first time I saw my son interacting with a large language learning model. There are limitations to what it can do, and what it knows. According to Professor Mike Sharples, a professor of Educational Technology at the Open University in the UK, OpenAI’s language model is “creating an internal representation, not just at the surface text, but of the ideas and concepts behind it”. It also says it can write “plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers”. Within a week of ChatGPT being launched, OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO tweeted that more than a million people had already used it. It works much like the human brain, using interconnected ‘neurons’ that can learn to identify patterns in data and make predictions about what should come next. And the bot is not just parroting text it has learned.
