Netflix dramedy Ginny & Georgia returns with more Gilmore Girls-esque maternal drama—and even more murder.

“Sometimes I feel like there’s not always room for me.” That’s the actual downfall of Ginny & Georgia—it doesn’t know when to get Georgia out of Ginny’s way. It doesn’t help that the series never fully allows Georgia to become the Big Bad thanks to frequent flashbacks to her tragic past as a teen mom (portrayed by Nikki Roumel) and Howey’s innate likeability. The show sympathizes with the scrappy mother, even when she’s committing the worst of offenses her children regularly suffer as a consequence. The addition of therapy offers a direct line into Ginny’s thinking, the universal pains of growing up, and the specific struggles of how Georgia’s cons and crimes affect her, portrayed more effectively than those droll voice-overs the show has employed in both seasons. Take for example one of Georgia’s rants in a frustrated moment of parenting in season two: “Sneaking a boy through a window. The surface-level similarities were accounted for: the bright, bookish teen daughter, the magnetic 30-year-old single mom, the postcard-worthy New England town, and the penchant for alliterative titles.

How does season two of the mother-daughter show Ginny & Georgia compare to the first season, now that Ginny knows her mother is a murderer?

From the window of her apartment, Georgia spots a man getting out of his car and coming to her door. [Gilmore Girls](https://decider.com/show/gilmore-girls/), the show has shed a lot of that vibe now that Ginny and Georgia’s relationship has become strained and Georgia’s past more mysterious. She turns the stereo on full blast, dead-bolts the door, and forces her kids to dance with her to drown out the pounding on the door and his voice as he screams, “I’m going to kill you, Georgia Miller!” Georgia, in the present, shoots awake after remembering this moment in a dream, panicked and gasping for air. Her father notices a shift in her since her arrival though, and just when you hope she’s going to confide in him about what her mother did, she has a panic attack and admits that she hurts herself on purpose, and it’s all because of her mother. But from Georgia’s point of view, you do what you need to do to survive and preserve your family, and that’s a lesson you might only learn as you age. When he interrupts her to mention to Georgia that Ginny needs therapy to address her self-harm, Ginny won’t let him tell Georgia, so she cuts him off so he can’t say it, and to shut everyone up, she pulls back on her request: Fine, she says, she’ll stay living with her mom if it means keeping her secret safe. Ginny refuses to discuss this with anyone though – she half-smiles through the Thanksgiving meal with her father’s family, the African-American half who love her but talk behind her back about how Georgia doesn’t know the first thing about raising a young, Black woman, but when the meal is over, she retreats to her room to burn herself with a lighter, her secret self-harm is the only thing she seems to have control over. The Gist: At the end of season one, teenage Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Georgia’s (Brianne Howey) “us against the world” relationship became fractured when Ginny learned that her dead step-father was very likely poisoned by her mother with wolfsbane, a flower whose poison mimics a heart attack. Zion assumes it’s because Ginny doesn’t like Paul, and Ginny never really corrects him on that because it’s easier than saying “Actually it’s because mom killed a guy,” so instead, she begs Zion to let her live with him. This moment, this memory of happiness, is Ginny’s memory of a specific moment in her childhood. But not all was as it seemed, and early on we learned that the mom, Georgia, killed her last husband and moved her kids as far from the crime as possible. Opening Shot: In a flashback, a young, maybe age 7 or 8, Ginny dances with her mother Georgia.

Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia does have a lot going for it when it hones in on its characters and all their idiosyncrasies (some, of course, more charming than others). Meanwhile, Georgia, although newly engaged and the soon-to-be First Lady of Wellsbury, is not feeling too celebratory without her kids in the house. From lying about sending Austin’s letters to his dad in prison to taking out credit cards in her children’s names, Georgia has always done what it takes to survive — to the detriment of her children.

So I think what Joe doesn’t understand is, where he sees this past connection with Georgia — he had a crush on this girl, she really resonated with him, and there’s this romantic connection there — for Georgia, I’m not saying that’s not there for her but I think what trumps that for her is that he really symbolized hope to her at a moment where she felt hopeless. We see that, we see her struggle, we see her relapse, we see her really want to get better, and I think that that’s important to show. LAMPERT: We tried to explore it more with Marcus’ storyline in terms of the musician stuff in Season 1, and Felix was against it, he was like, that’s not the character, that’s Hunters thing in Season 1. But I love that scene in the coffee shop, Blue Farm, between the two of them at the end of the season because I do think it leaves the door open for them. This is something that kids that age are going through and are dealing with, and to show it on screen in a way that feels truthful, I think makes a lot of people feel seen and feel represented and de-stigmatized in a way that’s important. And then in Episode 9, we Tarantino it; we start that episode with flashes of what’s to come and then we rewind time and bring it back. And Ginny, I think, is always going to struggle with the fact that she loves her mom, and she does always opt on her side at the end of the day. He really tries hard to be that guy, so I think it’s interesting to see that character’s inner struggle when he’s confronted with — the scene that’s coming to mind in particular is when Georgia stood up and came up with the idea for small business Saturdays — and you see him really swallow a lot in that scene. And I think it’s this idea that the show is going to look really different in Season 3 — if we were to get one — because this was a woman who was a superhero at what she did, and now she’s been caught. But that would definitely be something that I think we would want to explore in Season 3. LAMBERT: I think it’s so poetic, it’s so the tone of the show that Georgia is put into that cop car to “Going to the Chapel” playing in the background so cheery, and it’s heartbreaking. So there’s very much a strategy in place where I think we’ll drop it, and then we have to wait to see how it does and if we’re going to see Season 3 but I certainly hope we do because it’s going to be a wild ride.

Ginny ends up sorting everything out for the wedding (since Georgia cancelled everything in fear) and Georgia ends up getting taken to town hall, her new wedding venue by Joe’s horse, Milkshake. However, the high anticipation for the second season’s release and the way in which the writers have ended the show suggests that a third season could very much be in the works already or at least solidify thought about by the writers. The cliffhanger ending of Ginny & Georgia season 2 makes the third season very much a necessity. When Sophie confesses that she still wanted to be friends with Max, very much toying with Max’s feelings, Max drew a line and said she couldn’t do it and decided to see where things went with Silver. Something Paul knows Gil doesn’t want because he is an ex-convict and an ex-convict getting custody, probably wouldn’t look good to a judge in court. However once Ginny figures out what her mother’s up to she convinces her to tell Paul the truth about her past. Everything gets a bit much for Georgia and she cancels her wedding venue and prepares to flee with the kids to a new location. Don’t worry, he didn’t kill anyone he just ended up shooting Gil a little bit in the arm and in the kitchen wall. She tells Ginny to text Marcus and Max that no it was not a gunshot they just heard and she gets Austin to draw a picture which they put over the bullet hole in their kitchen wall. At the end of episode 8, we hear a gunshot go off in idyllic Wellsbury. While that is totally chaotic for the second season’s conclusion, the actual final moment features something no one would ever expect to see in Georgia’s future.

That night, Marcus tells his sister Max that he doesn’t think love is always a “good thing” and he “doesn’t want to be with anyone” even though Ginny is the “only thing that makes him happy”. In a later voiceover, Marcus says, “I don’t have it in me to be loved right now,” and the two make the devastating decision to break up. “I don’t want this, I want you,” Ginny says as she starts to cry. It finally makes sense to Ginny that he’s not in the right headspace to have a girlfriend and she decides to be there for him purely as a friend. “I love you, but I don’t want to hold you back,” he says. All accusatory like you don’t believe I’m fine.” He responds: “I don’t believe you’re fine but I’m not going to push you if you don’t want to talk.” Ginny reveals that she came over so that she wouldn’t hurt herself, for which he is grateful. She can see Marcus is “damaged” but Georgia admits she’s damaged, too, and delivers a truly gut-wrenching speech: “Ginny is special, she’s going to go off and do wonderful things. And I realized something recently, she doesn’t know it yet but one day, she’s going to figure out that our damage is holding her back and she’s going to leave us. Indeed, Gentry acknowledges how significant Marcus and Ginny’s relationship is to each of them on a spiritual level. “My whole family’s broken, I’m broken,” Ginny says. The MAN in MANG—Maxine, Abby and Nora—blacklist Ginny from their friendship group and feeling distraught that she’s lost the only friends she’s ever really had, Ginny steals Marcus’ motorbike and with her half-brother Austin, they flee Wellsbury for their father’s condo in Boston.

She wanted to be happy and move on, so she wanted to share that with Cynthia too. All Georgia has wanted was closure on her past to move forward to the next step, which is what she was trying to do by spilling the truth about her past (sans the murders) to Paul before their wedding. In Georgia’s mind, that was how she repaid her debt to Cynthia and returned the kindness. (As we later find out, Cynthia had been in a harmful relationship like this before she met Tom.) Georgia is grateful for Cynthia stepping in as Gil is the one person she is afraid of due to their horrific past. While we don’t know exactly how he proved it, the finale of Ginny and Georgia Season 2 finds the police busting into Paul (Scott Porter) and Georgia’s wedding to arrest Georgia for this murder in the final moments. Throughout her life, Georgia has been shown so little kindness and mercy that she wanted to repay Cynthia for helping her out. This is partially why she puts all of her energy into her ill-fated mayoral candidacy, as her home life is emotionally brutal to deal with, and she’s severely struggling with losing the love of her life and trying to get her son Zach (Connor Laidman) through this trying time. Hearing Cynthia so heartbroken over the current situation with her husband gave Georgia the idea to cut her suffering short and allow her to finally and fully grieve for Tom. From flashbacks in the first season, we know Georgia poisoned Anthony after she married him to get custody of Ginny back and prove she was responsible, but Anthony was super controlling and altogether gross because of the inappropriate age difference between them. She did it to protect herself and protect her daughter, respectively. Wellsbury is her fresh start, but the details of Georgia’s haunting past come back to bite both of them and threaten their new life, especially with private investigator Gabriel Cordova (Alex Mallari Jr.) set on making Georgia pay for her crimes. In the idealistic town of Wellsbury — á la Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls — Ginny and Georgia attempt to find their places in their new life.
