Marietta without taxi cab services (Parkersburg News)

MARIETTA — The city of Marietta has been without taxi cab service since Jan. 1. It is unclear if — or when — Ohio Valley Cab and Delivery Service will re.

GreenCab became the company under consideration for the evening taxi service after the city published a Request for Proposal in late October 2022 and received two bids — one from GreenCab and one from Ohio Valley Cab. Legislation for the city to enter into the agreement with GreenCab has not yet been introduced before council, but is being prepared by Law Director Paul Bertram III and is expected relatively soon. The city is using federal American Rescue Plan Act money to pay for GreenCab service in a six-month supplemental transportation pilot program within city limits. It would also agree to work with the city to help identify potential funding sources to operate a permanent transportation program. At the same time the company provides actual transportation, GreenCab would be required to record and present detailed data the city requests on ridership patterns, so that the city could at a later date demonstrate need in a request for grant funds. The city is in discussions with GreenCab of Athens for a taxi service that will run only in evening hours within city limits, a time period when there has been no bus or taxi service available.

Taxi trial: City accused of 'weak' response to Uber's arrival, while ... (Ottawa Citizen)

Superior Court Justice Marc Smith was presented with two duelling narratives on Wednesday about the City of Ottawa's response to the 2014 arrival of Uber on ...

His testimony began Wednesday afternoon, and was expected to last several days. When Uber hit the streets of Ottawa in the fall of 2014 there were four of these brokers, or taxi dispatch companies, and approximately 768 plate holders, with 1,188 plates between them. He also noted that the entrance of private transportation companies into the vehicle-for-hire market likely offered a benefit to taxi drivers who don’t have their own plates, such as more power to negotiate leasing a plate at a lower rate and additional job options. Other cities experienced the same. They were further harmed, according to their lawyer, when the city passed a new bylaw in 2016 allowing private transportation companies such as Uber to operate legally, following intense lobbying. Taxis have a long history, and you can generally rely upon official ones to take you where you need to go. Although this can be an efficient way to get where you’re going, the truth of it is that it’s not an especially safe way to travel. For another option, consider rideshare apps, which can offer a whole suite of safety features dedicated to making sure your trip goes smoothly. Prior to its inception, taxis held sway over the majority of private transportation — unless you were using a shuttle or renting a vehicle. An October 2019 survey of 500 women conducted by Alarms.org, the website of the National Council for Home Safety and Security — a national trade association — found that 45% of riders prefer female drivers. Whether you’re paying a fixed rate or using the taximeter for your ride, you’ll want to use a card that’ll protect you. However, when this isn’t the case, you’ll first want to talk to the driver about your destination and the fee that they plan on charging you. Some countries have regulations that set a fixed price for certain rides (such as those from the airport to the city center), while others leave it up to the drivers, which is the case for Paris taxis, for example. Did you know that in Almaty, Kazakhstan, everyone in the city is an impromptu cab driver? In this case, you’ll want to do your best to have a taxi arranged for you.
