Bristol Rovers vs Argyle Live: Papa Johns Trophy updates (Plymouth Live)

Steven Schumacher's Pilgrims are in quarter-final action at the Memorial Stadium this evening.

Steven Schumacher wants the on-loan Aston Villa midfielder to get in a full week of work on the training ground before assessing whether to include him in the squad for the top-of-the-table League One clash at Ipswich Town on Saturday. The Papa Johns Trophy is starting to get serious - very serious - for Plymouth Argyle as they take on Bristol Rovers in the quarter-finals at the Memorial Stadium tonight. Fit-again Finn Azaz has returned to full-contact training for Argyle but it is too soon for him to be involved in the Papa Johns Trophy quarter-final against Bristol Rovers.

Bristol Rovers vs Plymouth Argyle Prediction, Head-To-Head, Live ... (SportsUnfold)

On Tuesday evening, Bristol Rovers will play Plymouth Argyle at the Memorial Stadium in the EFL Trophy quarterfinal, a matchup between two League One teams.

We’re leaning toward a hard-fought draw at the end of this one because of this. In their last six league games, they have only given up two goals and won four of them. This season, the Gas have already played the Pilgrims in the EFL Trophy.

REPORT | BRISTOL ROVERS 0 ARGYLE 2 (Plymouth Argyle)

The Greens overwhelmed Bristol Rovers with waves of attacking football and the reward came with a first goal in Green for Ben Waine, followed by a decisive ...

An accomplished first-half display was completed by Waine latching on to another ball over the top and unleashing a left-foot effort from 22 yards that grazed the bar. James Bolton was blocked in the six-yard box before Endacott steered a shot narrowly over. The semi-final draw takes place on Saturday afternoon. A fine Waine pass almost released Hardie three minutes after the goal but Jaakkola was quick off his line to hoof clear. A dangerous corner from Rovers was then cleared under pressure by the Argyle defence. The second goal looked inevitable and it was delivered in superb fashion.

Plymouth and Bolton reach last four of EFL Trophy (BBC News)

Plymouth Argyle, Bolton Wanderers, Accrington Stanley and Cheltenham Town reach the semi-finals of the Papa Johns Trophy.

Liam Sercombe lashed home from close range before playing in Stoke loanee Will Goodwin to score on his debut. Accrington needed penalties to defeat the 2018 winners Lincoln. Skipper Tom Hopper put the Imps ahead after charging down a kick from keeper Lukas Jensen, but Pressley levelled before the break and completed the turnaround from the spot with 17 minutes remaining after a foul on Shaun Whalley.

Sam Finley and Bristol Rovers dreaming big with no fear in play-off ... (Bristol Live)

Sam Finley says there is no reason why Bristol Rovers should not believe in their promotion credentials, particularly with the attacking weapons Joey Barton ...

It is great for Bristol Rovers to be thinking Sheffield Wednesday can come to the Mem and we’re confident we can turn them over, it’s brilliant for the football club." It would be a brilliant feat for the football club." "We’ve played everyone now so we’ve seen what the league has to offer and it is good confidence for us. You’re always checking and looking around, but the next game is the most important for me. With the firepower we’ve got, we know if we keep a clean sheet we are going to win the game because we know with the quality we’ve got we’re going to score goals. Confidence is soaring amongst Joey Barton's squad because they believe there are enough goals in the team to win any game.

Aaron Collins bench call explained as Bristol Rovers coach explains ... (BristolWorld)

Bristol Rovers used one substitution out of a possible five against Plymouth. Harvey Saunders came off the bench.

It’s a simple ball down the side and we have got to be better. We didn’t stop the first or the second cross and the ball gets looped up in the air. The match was fairly even with both sides having 50% possession with Rovers shading it by just ten more passes. We still felt the lads who came into the team by far were good enough to get the result and job done tonight. [Joey Barton](/topic/joey-barton) has not been afraid to make substitutions, especially at half-time when things aren’t going in their favour. The Gas first-team coach revealed that some of the substitutes had been carrying knocks and were not risked.

Rovers verdict: Barton's calculation, transfer takeaways and unsung ... (Bristol Live)

Sam Frost's verdict as Bristol Rovers' run in the EFL Trophy was halted in the quarter-finals by League One leaders Plymouth Argyle, who won 2-0 at the Mem ...

Tuesday's game was something of a throwback, both in optics and, to a certain extent, in the action. Here's hoping for an improvement in the weather to make life a bit easier after a hugely challenging period. There has been enough rain in recent weeks to put paid to the games against Exeter City, Cheltenham Town and Plymouth Argyle, but all three have gone ahead as planned thanks to their tireless efforts. It is a difficult question to answer but it seems Barton chose the certainty of his prized assets being fit to fight another day with the league campaign still full of opportunity. However, although Rovers have shown they can fight back from deficits, it was not a given that even their star men could have turned this game around, with building momentum and piecing together attacks proving extremely difficult in the conditions. Both Barton and Mangan have suggested there may be a drainage issue to boot. They had come back from the same scoreline against Plymouth in the league meeting in October, but the stars of that show were not on the pitch and the men in their place could not make it happen as Rovers' pursuit of a big day out fizzled out. Coupled with the state of the pitch – upon which Cheltenham Town defender Lewis Freestone suffered a serious knee injury on New Year's Day – and the fact that Argyle had a two-goal cushion, it was deemed a risk too far to bring them on. For Gasheads of a certain vintage, all this talk about the pitch may start winding them up. Plymouth were able to hand out full debuts to new signings Waine, Callum Wright and Jay Matete, showcasing the depth Stephen Schumacher has amassed at Home Park. However, Rovers' second string, with the occasional cameo from the pillars of the first team, navigated their way to the quarter-final, just two wins from Wembley. The rest – Aaron Collins, Josh Coburn, Scott Sinclair et al – had the night off, despite the fact Rovers were chasing a game that they ultimately lost 2-0.
