Police enter German village condemned to let mine expand (1 News)

"You won't save the world's climate on your own," said Pusch. "But I'm at least as scared of my children growing up in a country where everyone takes the law into their own hands." The village's last resident left in 2022 after being forced to sell to utility company RWE. Environmentalists say bulldozing the village to expand the nearby Garzweiler coal mine would result in huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. Studies indicate that about 110 million metric tons of coal could be extracted from beneath Luetzerath. "If this coal is burned, we're actually going to take down our climate goals," she said.

Bird of prey poisonings pose risk to people say Lincolnshire Police (BBC News)

Police fear a human fatality may result from poisons being left by criminals to kill birds of prey.

"It's too many and it's only a small proportion of the number of birds killed," he said. "The poisons are often blue or green - or some other bright colour a child may be attracted to, and I really fear that one day a child is going to come across this, [touch it] and put their fingers in their mouth." The wildlife officer said the substances used posed a real danger to dogs and cats, as well as people. He said the motivation to kill birds of prey was driven by the fact they were viewed as a predator of game birds, but the sentences handed out were often too lenient to act as a deterrent. The RSPB has described Lincolnshire as "a national hotspot" for the persecution of birds of prey. The investigations officer said they had seen a record number of incidents across the UK in recent years, including in Norfolk, Dorset and Yorkshire, with a significant number of reports currently being investigated in Lincolnshire.

Safer Streets Fund is building confidence in the police (GOV.UK)

Evaluation of the first round of the Safer Streets Fund shows that this investment is boosting trust in police and making communities feel safer.

As part of this initiative, approved security features were added to properties, along with the implementation of innovative design solutions leading to a reduction in antisocial behaviour and a decrease in opportunities for crime to occur. There have been numerous examples of insightful and innovative projects implemented by forces in their areas, which has helped give their local communities more confidence in policing and made them feel safer. This initiative supported us in increasing our connection with the local community, providing regular opportunities for a two-way conversation with local residents and businesses about the issues causing them concern and then taking action together. It has enabled us to come together to design out crime and increase a sense of community ownership – making the local area safer and stronger. The Safer Streets Fund was launched in January 2020, and has to date supported 270 projects aiming to cut neighbourhood crime such as theft, burglary, anti-social behaviour and violence against women and girls. This reflects the efforts made to make residents aware of the work being done to make them feel more secure such as fitting new locks, video doorbells and alarms.

Activists say they will defend the village of Luetzerath to prevent the expansion of the Garzweiler mine.

The company has said it supports energy transition and a temporary increase in the use of lignite-fired plants to tide Germany through the energy crisis. “RWE is appealing to the squatters to observe the rule of law and to end the illegal occupation of buildings, plants and sites belonging to RWE peacefully,” it said in a statement. “We are squatting in all of the different structures in Luetzerath, and we are staying here because 280 million tonnes of coal are still supposed to be extracted from the Garzweiler mine,” Hamid said.

“The story around female bloggers is a very sad story, because it is in fact the law enforcement agencies that are carrying out this persecution,” Mirzoyeva said. Only very few would dare to do anything as pious as wear a veil covering the face – and they do so in the knowledge that it could likely incur police harassment. Obscene words have nothing to do with the culture of the Tajik woman. In future, I will try to perform at weddings in [traditional] Tajik dresses of the kind fitting for every Tajik woman,” she says in the apology video. In the wake of the clamor over Kurbonova, social media users began directing police to adopt measures against other people deemed to have expressed themselves improperly. Having realized the errors of her ways, she would now delete the material, Jamshed said. Some are equivalent to citizen journalists, but most, especially in the constrained conditions of Tajikistan, typically confine themselves to posting on trivial and nonpolitical matters. The warning leveled at Kurbonova and her peers creates a perplexing predicament for female social media users in Tajikistan – men are never singled out for moralistic criticism in this vein – since the Interior Ministry has issued no guidance on what constitutes indecent conduct or language. Or make her clean a toilet, so that then she might realize she needs to wash out her mouth too!” Facebook user Mijgona Halimova Jamshed recalled how, when she was younger, she made videos in which she used swear words. All they have said is that Kurbonova filmed and distributed videos of an indecent nature and used obscene language not in keeping with traditional Tajik mores. In fact, Kurbonova’s transgressions, as the police perceived them, may have extended beyond any specific throwaway remark.

A guide to police rookie success: 100 tips from Police1 readers (Police News)

There are many ups and downs, but you will meet incredible people and work with some of the best folks on the planet.

There are many ups and downs, but you will meet incredible people and work with some of the best folks on the planet (and some of the worst). The motto of police work is to "Serve and Protect," but that is a fancy way of saying "I'm here to help." - The job will wear you out if you let it, take your days off, and use your vacation and PTO time. - You can’t save everyone and not everyone can be helped. - Treat the people you contact the way you would like to be treated under the same circumstance. The result is that after you are retired, it's a satisfaction looking in the mirror and knowing you gave it your all, every day, every call, to make a difference in people's lives. - If you plan to go out and socialize with coworkers, always call and check in at home so that your better half is not worried. - If you are or get married, stay faithful and loyal to your spouse. - Knowing that you will win the war, it is not necessary to win the battles as well. - Master the art of underreaction (as it applies to insults and verbal assaults). - Remove "I" and "me" from the situation, replacing it with "you," "you're" and "your." During your police career, there will be both ups and downs, but you will meet incredible people and work with some of the best folks on the planet.
