Carlo Ancelotti has joked that Rodrygo “forgot” to shake his hand after throwing a substitution strop in Real Madrid's latest Copa del Rey outing.

What did Carlo Ancelotti say to inspire Real Madrid's Copa del Rey ... (AS English)

Real Madrid were 2-0 down at half-time against Villarreal but scored three second-half goals to progress to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

“He played very well, his positioning was good in the first half, he showed more energy and character in the second. But the second was unexpected, it’s hard to change the flow of a game that has been that bad in the first half. “He and Vinicius changed the game, they added quality and energy. In the first half we were not good but the second was different. “I was very angry, we were losing, we were taking risks by pressing high up the field but they handled our pressure well at the back. We mustn’t forget the first half, but the second gives us a lot of confidence. “I told them they had to wake up, we lost too many individual battles in the first half. I don’t think he should’ve been shown the yellow card but he put in a complete performance.” In this match, there was a clear difference between the first half and the second. A very bad first half and very good second half.” Rodrygo had a little muscular issue at half-time and I didn’t want to risk him. He also played down his clash with Rodrygo after substituting the Brazilian early in the second period.

How many times have Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid played each ... (AS English)

Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid will face off in the round of 16 of the 2022/23 Copa del Rey.

The only time Madrid have won a Copa del Rey final against Atlético was in 1975 when they won – bizarrely enough – at Estadio Vicente Calderón, Atleti’s former home, in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw. Second-half goals from Raúl García and Jose Giménez led Atleti to a 2-0 home win in the first leg, which was followed by a 2-2 draw at the Bernabéu. Real Madrid have won almost exactly half (114) of the previous 230 - compared to 57 for Atlético - and have lost only one of their last 10 games against their city rivals. If history is anything to go by, Atlético Madrid would much rather meet Real Madrid in the final of the Copa del Rey than at any other stage of the competition. The most obvious thing to say about the Madrid derby is that its participants do not especially like each other, although in particular from the Atleti side. Once again, Real Madrid did the unthinkable.

Real Madrid-Atlético in Copa del Rey quarter-finals (Real Madrid)

The tie will be played as a single game on the 25th of 26th of January at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“It's a big clash which will surely be hard-fought and great for the spectators. It's a single-game knock-out and we have to try and make the most of the fact we're playing at home. This will be the eighteenth time we face Atlético in a Copa knock-out tie, and the previous 17 encounters make happy reading for our team (11-6).
