I finally found ease and my place in the industry. It was in that temple that I decided that my next step would be to do something that nourished my mental wellbeing – and that’s where the idea of training to be a yoga teacher was born. After three years of soul searching, I thankfully got my social life back and now have fellow yoga teacher friends that give me a true sense of support and community. I came to the realisation that instead of being in my dream job, I was actually in an environment that was harming my wellbeing – a reality amplified by the alienation I felt from being one of the few women in the office, and also a person of colour. This had a knock-on effect: I started to get offered yoga, breath work and meditation classes by studio owners instead of being asked to audition. I was teaching for a few schools and nurseries and got involved with a charity that supported teenage girls from underprivileged backgrounds. Looking back, I feel so fortunate to have had this experience, and I am incredibly aware that it's a privilege not many have the chance to enjoy. I decided to give myself a deadline of six months to make it work. My build and social media prowess were being used against me – which, surely, had nothing to do with my aptitude as a teacher. I was proud of myself and I loved every aspect of my job. On my travels, I ended up in Cambodia, where I spent time in a Buddhist temple that held daily meditation led by the resident monks.
