The deal for the Argentine surpasses the £100m Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish from Aston Villa 18 months ago.

Large fines or points deductions can be dished out as punishment to clubs which don't adhere to the rules. Following the arrival of Fernandez, Chelsea spent £323.3m in January. Fernandez has already taken responsibility without the ball at Benfica, slotting into an anchorman role regularly as required. Missed opportunities: Why 'safe' Jorginho transfer sums up Arsenal's ... (Goal.com)

Arsenal brought in three new signings in January, but their failure to land either of their top two targets could come back to bite them in the Premier ...

Whether it’s enough to see off the threat of Manchester City, however, remains to be seen. If he performs well when called upon and helps the team win the title, he will be a hero. The failure of Arsenal’s sporting director to close either of those two big deals has again seen many point the finger at his negotiating skills. How much of a difference would Caicedo have made had the Gunners managed to tempt Brighton into doing business? If he struggles and Arsenal fall away, he will be seen a panic buy that went horribly wrong. Jorginho goes against almost everything that Arsenal have done in the market over the past couple of years. Does it make Arsenal stronger and better equipped for a title run-in? Petr Cech failed to hit the standards he had set at Stamford Bridge, while David Luiz is not remembered too fondly, although he did play a key role in the FA Cup success of 2020. So in that regard, he could be a smart signing. While he is well stocked on the right side with William Saliba, Rob Holding and Ben White, the Arsenal boss had no left-footed options to cover for Gabriel. Moises Caicedo is expected to be on the club's radar once more while football.london understands Declan Rice remains a key target for Chelsea despite Arsenal working hard to try to lure him to the Emirates Stadium. It's why a big focus of the summer transfer window for Chelsea will be to move certain players on. There is interest in Brentford's David Raya, who will only have 12 months remaining on his contract come the summer. The task for Potter in the weeks ahead is to keep every member of his squad happy. The formalities were concluded swiftly and the 22-year-old is expected to arrive in England today. That is work for the summer when the transfer window is open for two-and-a-half months, not just 31 days.

Transfer grades: Chelsea splash cash, Arsenal thrive on pragmatism ... (CBSSports.com)

With the January transfer window now over, we can look back at some of the major deals and asses which of Europe's biggest clubs fared best.

With failure to qualify for Europe a distinct possibility, Juve's poor January could pave the way for a desperate summer and an enforced exodus of remaining talent. Much has been made about a potential fall-out between Cancelo and his former boss which could prove costly for the Citizens -- if true. In terms of quality, the Morocco international could have given Christophe Galtier's men a significant jump in creativity, but Navas and Sarabia leave less depth in the squad than before. Without that, this remains simply a talented bunch of players assembled at high cost and currently on course to fail to qualify for Europe. Julian Nagelsmann's side looked vulnerable going into the FIFA 2022 World Cup break but now they look better equipped and the capture of the Portugal international from Manchester City was particularly impressive in its swift nature. This winter's business also should not prevent Arsenal from making the sort of significant changes they want to make this coming summer which might include a move for West Ham United's Declan Rice.
