Fernandez seems to be the first name on the list. Now, to the main question. At least four Chelsea January signings will not be able to be registered for the Champions League and consequently have to miss out on the knock-out stages this season.
A look at how UEFA's Champions League squad registration rules will impact Chelsea after the January transfer window.
Every team competing in UEFA competition must submit a squad of no more than 25 players to feature for them during the season on an A List. Aside from Felix, each of Chelsea's new signings were born after that date. Their new faces can all feature in the Premier League, but UEFA rules mean some of them will have no choice but to miss out on this season's Champions League squad.
Chelsea boss Graham Potter will reportedly be forced to make some tough decisions as a result of the club's aggressive transfer strategy.
Potter had already warned that the scale of Chelsea's transfer activity in January could pose issues further down the line by insisting that it would be unreasonable to sign an entirely new squad in one window. It is said that only two of Fernandez, Mudryk, Badiashile and Joao Felix can be included before Chelsea will need to start removing some of their current players in order to make room for the others. Felix, meanwhile, has already played in the Premier League, while there is also space for Fernandez to be included. The departure of Jorginho to Arsenal will free up an additional place, though, which means that a total of just two new signings can be named in the squad to face Borussia Dortmund later this month as things stand. Enzo Fernandez became Chelsea's club-record signing for a fee of around £107m on deadline day, with the Argentina maestro joining the likes of Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke in moving to Stamford Bridge. The Blues splashed close to £300million on new players last month, with their expensive outlay accounting for 37 per cent of the combined total spent by all Premier League clubs.
Chelsea's January transfer deadline day was frantic at best as the Blues tried their best to shuffle their squad around to get the best balance they could ...
An exit was confirmed as [Jorginho ](https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/transfer-news/hakim-ziyech-psg-transfer-chelsea-26125666)made the £12million move to rivals Arsenal as the end of his contract neared. [ current rules on registering the squad](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/024e-0e9960c4c766-21ef2df7ed44-1000--can-january-signings-play-in-the-champions-league-europa-lea/), UEFA states: "As of the knockout round play-offs, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. The removal of Jorginho following his exit simplifies things slightly, bringing the total to 23, however that means one player will still have to miss out from the current list above. It means that only a few of the numerous January incomings will be able to play and some may miss out. However as one deadline passes, another creeps up on the Blues and with it comes difficult decisions that will have to be made. [ Joao Felix ](https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/transfer-news/hakim-ziyech-psg-transfer-chelsea-26125666)can be registered for the club, despite playing in the previous rounds, however only three new additions can be made to the squad.
Only three new players can be registered for the knockout stages, so Chelsea are left with a major selection headache having been so busy in the transfer market ...
“So you have to do the right thing and look at what the right solutions are. Despite Felix and Mudryk appearing earlier in the campaign, they are not cup-tied for the Blues. Due to UEFA rules, Chelsea are required to register all their new signings on List A by the February 2 deadline, which will limit all clubs to 25 players.
Chelsea have spent huge money this month, with Enzo Fernandez the latest player signed, and more are expected to join in the summer.
Ahead of him could still be Romelu Lukaku, with the Belgian still a Chelsea player and could yet return from his loan at Inter Milan, with the Italians unlikely to spend big on a player who has been injured so much. The Blues have been linked with a number of goalkeepers, including Leeds United number one Ilan Meslier, who could benefit from having two countrymen in front of him at centre back. One day someone is going to get a tune out of the former Manchester United striker again, and maybe it'll be Potter, who also needs to get more out of Raheem Sterling. Potter played three at the back with Brighton and has done the same at Stamford Bridge, but it doesn't mean that there isn't a possibility of him switching it up. Fofana could return before the end of this season but it might take him a while to be back to the kind of form that persuaded Chelsea to pay £80 million for him last summer. It's unlikely that'll be the end of the signings from west London either, with a goalkeeper rumoured to be of interest to Potter, whilst there is also some excellent players to come back off loan.
Other arrivals at Stamford Bridge include on-loan Joao Felix, £88m Mykhailo Mudryk and £35m Benoit Badiashile but UEFA rules stipulate only three new players ...
It would also appear other January arrivals such as Noni Madueke, Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana will miss out on Champions League football this season. Article 46.03 of the rules says: 'If the registration of such new players causes the number of players on List A to exceed 25, the club must remove the necessary number of currently registered players to reduce the squad to 25 players again.' Chelsea face an awkward situation as UEFA rules allow only three new players to be registered for the knockout rounds - their January signings include Mykhailo Mudryk (left) and Joao Felix [Champions League regulations](https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regulations-of-the-UEFA-Champions-League-2022/23/Article-45-Player-lists-Online) states: 'As of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. AG14: It has to be Mudryk as he's a great, skilful player which is what Chelsea need. Felix, in my opinion wasn't a needed option anyway with the players we have that fit that profile. And then Badiashile, what a signing, so he should get the third spot Mudryk has to be in the squad for £88m. Would Chelsea want to go into the Champions League without him in their squad?" "Enzo Fernandez has got to be in the squad for £105m. Enzo has just arrived so they may want him to spend some time adapting to their play style (whatever that may be) first. Enzo will be included as you don't spend that money on a player and not include them The 21-year-old has started two Premier League games so far and Chelsea have kept clean sheets in both of them. With Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Cucurella and Cesar Azpilicueta all able to play in a back three, Badiashile is looking at a lot of centre-back rivals. In a brief debut cameo against Liverpool, Mudryk showed that he belongs at the highest level of football. The Premier League's registration deadline is also on Thursday.
By all accounts Arsenal was very much in the running to sign Ukrainian superstar Mykhailo Mudryk during the January transfer window.
The Premier League is successful because it’s got things right.” The January transfer window is often viewed as the worst time to buy players, given clubs don’t want to lose valuable assets and arguably hold the upper hand in negotiations. T”his is something where it has been an evolutionary process of trying to figure out who are those best players.” In his first full transfer window last summer as the club’s interim sporting director, Boehly and Chelsea spent a reported $302.08 million on new signings, according to Transfermarkt. The deal for Fernández brings the club’s recent transfer outlay to over $600 million. Fernandez also signed on an eight-and-a-half year contract at Stamford Bridge, according to the BBC. As the current Premier League leader, the 22-year-old forward had the potential to be a pivotal addition in the title race. And that means at times, not all the pieces are fit together,” said Dormer. [reiterated its calls](https://www.fairgameuk.org/press-releases/transfer-window) for a transfer levy to put in place for Premier League clubs, saying it could raise almost $200 million which “could help provide a vital life line to clubs below the top flight that continue to struggle with the fall out of the pandemic and the day-to-day challenges of the cost-of-living crisis.” Since arriving at Chelsea, it’s estimated that Boehly has spent close to $750 million on transfers. “So finding another club who’s willing to take the player off of Chelsea’s hands and pay them a level of remuneration to which the player is happy is going to be quite challenging.” “Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the Club for the long-term and build on Chelsea’s remarkable history of success.”
