Both studies found that the dike has a northerly, steeply downward pointing paleomagnetic direction (i.e., normal polarity), whereas the basalt flow cut by the dike has a southwesterly, steeply inclined upward direction (i.e., reverse polarity) (Figure 3). So, 40 years later, we sought to retest and potentially reinvigorate the approach [ [Biasi and Karlstrom](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2021.117169), 2021]. Nearly 6 decades later, [Everitt and Clegg](https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-246X.1962.tb00354.x) [1962] proposed a more complete version of this approach that has survived nearly unmodified to the present day [ [Buchan](https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4020-4423-6_12), 2007]. [remanent magnetization](https://eos.org/science-updates/making-a-better-magnetic-map) in alignment with the orientation of Earth’s magnetic field at that time and location (Figure 2). The Chief Joseph swarm was the feeder system for the Grande Ronde Basalt, which is thought to have erupted starting 16.5 million years ago [ [Kasbohm and Schoene](https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.aat8223), 2018] and makes up roughly 70% of the total volume of the CRBG [Taubeneck, 1989]. The CRBG consists of roughly 210,000 cubic kilometers of lava, or about 10 times the [volume of the five Great Lakes](https://www.epa.gov/greatlakes/physical-features-great-lakes) combined.
