Beverly Latiker's story: Controversy, imprisonment, what happened (Tuko.co.ke)

She was convicted and sentenced to life for the first-degree murder of Raymond Allen. At the time of her arrest and conviction, Latiker was aged 19 years old. During her trial, Latiker rescinded her confession and tried to convince the jury to retract her charges to the second degree. As part of her plea to reduce the charges from the first to the second degree, she would introduce Charles Lewis into her case and state that he had arranged a meeting with the victim. In the submitted affidavit Latiker who has been incarcerated for almost four decades, is sworn to be a model citizen. He hoped to obtain a reward from the police for providing any information on her whereabouts. As things progressed, she shoved Raymond onto the bed and shot him as he tried to get up. In a twist of a test of loyalty, she confessed to committing the gruesome murder but later retracted. Beverly was arrested in 1983 as a primary suspect in connection with the murder of Raymond Allen. Official Arkansas police records state that Latiker went to the motel, where she had a few drinks with the victims. Latiker then went on to steal cash and some possessions from the victim. Beverly Latiker's story has been the subject of a change.org petition that has gained popularity in the last month or so.

The port was situated near the mouth of the Cauvery. In the 1991 underwater exploration done by divers and in which a side-scan sonar and an echo-sounder were used aboard a vessel, three man-made structures were found. It was “inferred” that the harbour was 11 km long in the north-south direction and was 2.5 km broad. The survey was done for about 30 km to 40 km from the shore at a depth of 50 metres to 100 metres in the sea. To go back to the history of Poompuhar, it was a busy port of Sangam age Chola kings. But in another settlement, found 10 km south-east of the harbour, the compound walls were intact but the houses inside “were totally buried under the sand”, the statement said. The former was for the movement of big vessels and the latter for turning them. The settlements within the compound walls were intact because of the protection offered by the walls. This came to light when the study to “digitally reconstruct the comprehensive life-history of Poompuhar” was undertaken over an area of about 1,000 square kilometres in the offshore area of the Bay of Bengal, off Kaveripoompattinam, Dr. It thus appears to be one of the oldest port cities in the world.” He said one of the major findings of a research study, headed by him, was that the port city of Poompuhar was not 2,500 years old as it is widely believed, but “appears to be more than 15,000 years old. Archaeologists across the spectrum lost no time in knocking the bottom out of this claim on the grounds that it was illogical.

Toxic Water Project Sparks Controversy With Navajo Neighbors (Capital and Main)

Missed cues grow Native distrust around a New Mexico research project on oil well wastewater.

[data](https://nmpwrc.nmsu.edu/resources/presentations1/presentation-files/NMPWRC_Himali1.pdf) showing that the treated water from HPOC’s well was exceptionally clean — but that further rounds of testing would be needed before the process could be submitted to NMED for a permit to use the water outside oil and gas production. And the promise of a new water source in a dry land doesn’t sway them. In 2021, according to both Hightower and Khan at HPOC, Kanalis began the process of treating and testing produced water from Eagle Springs 8, sharing results with and following the protocols of the PWRC: filtering the water at a facility in Alamogordo; testing it at a lab in Albuquerque; watering grasses at a New Mexico State University agricultural test plot in Los Lunas; and discarding whatever remained in a licensed disposal well in the Permian Basin. Mueller was referring to the first set of tests that Kanalis did in 2021. They show state agencies surprised by Tso’s allegation and rushing to figure out their responsibilities in what appeared to be the first instance of treated produced water being used outside a laboratory setting. [reports](https://www.ehn.org/fracking-pennsylvania-pfas-2658837888.html) show that among other chemicals, they can contain PFAS “forever chemicals” that contribute to a slew of health problems and are extremely [difficult](https://www.hdrinc.com/insights/challenge-pfas-drinking-water-supplies#:~:text=Presence%20of%20PFAS%20in%20Drinking,photolysis%20and%20hydrolysis%20more%20challenging.) to remove from water. Oil and gas producers pulled up and reinjected more than 75 billion gallons of produced water in the first 11 months of 2022. The New Mexico Produced Water Act of 2019 tightly circumscribed what can be done with produced water, and it also begat the PWRC. And if the company thinks its water is safe, he says, “They should drink it.” To understand how a misunderstanding could grow into a statewide controversy, first it’s important to know that the term “oil well” is itself an aspirational label and a kind of misunderstanding. A second well on the site pulled 115 barrels of produced water for every one of oil. New Mexico state law offers oil and gas producers just three possibilities: It can be reused in drilling operations, it can be injected back underground (which can trigger [earthquakes](https://capitalandmain.com/rise-in-new-mexico-earthquakes-likely-triggered-by-oil-industry)), or it can be used to test new desalination processes through the state’s highly regulated [Produced Water Research Consortium](https://nmpwrc.nmsu.edu/index.html) (PWRC).

Controversy Over Gender and Race Has Teachers 'Walking on ... (EdSurge)

In Florida, teachers can face prison time and a hefty fine for having books deemed “harmful materials” in their classrooms. Teachers in Missouri can ...

Some teachers said restrictions in neighboring states increased their desire to include diverse materials in their instruction. Roughly one in 10 teachers expressed concern that running afoul of the restrictions could cost them their job or teaching license. Lawmakers in many states have tried to limit lessons that they say draw on the concept, arguing that it encourages classroom discussions of race that “Thirty percent did not know, and 37 percent reported that their state or district had not put in place any such limitations.” “And my scores have reflected this.” Twenty-five percent of teachers said they were unsure whether their state or district had restrictions. Another group of teachers—about 70 of those who said they are still addressing race- or gender-related topics in class—responded that they have no plans to change the way they teach despite the limiting policies. Oklahoma’s top education official personally called for a teacher’s professional license to be revoked after she [shared a link to banned books with her students](https://www.npr.org/2022/09/01/1120576731/an-oklahoma-teacher-gave-her-students-access-to-banned-books-now-shes-under-scru). About one-third of teachers said the limitations influenced their choice of textbooks and other written materials, videos and — in the case of a few math and science teachers — datasets they selected for their classes. Teachers who were aware of restrictions on teaching CRT said while they don’t teach the concept, they were “worried that they might be falsely accused of teaching CRT when talking about issues related to race, figures who are people of color, or history.” “Within the 17 states that had enacted restrictions, only 30 percent of teachers reported that their state had placed limitations on how teachers can address topics related to race or gender,” researchers found.
