Mr Martin returned to the stand to sing an emotional and powerful rendition of 'The Flowers of Manchester' but not before paying tribute to Gez Mason. Pete Martin then beautifully sang 'The Pride of Football' before Kady Cavanagh, Steve Douglas and Adrian Keenan all took to the microphone to read a series of self-penned poems. Mr Mason sadly passed away in September last year. Representatives from the club's youth academies and Munich58 laid their own wreaths as well. Fans had started to gather around the Munich plaque well over an hour before proceedings began at 2.40pm. The names of the 23 victims were read aloud before a period of silence was held when not a word was uttered by any in attendance.

On the 65th anniversary, players, staff and supporters gathered for the annual service at our stadium.

Cavannagh closed the service by leading a chant of ‘We’ll never die’. Flags flew at half-mast. Wreaths were laid in an official moment of remembrance, prior to a minute’s silence around 15:04 GMT – the time when the plane crash fatally took place on 6 February 1958.

The Munich Air Disaster and how it shaped Manchester United (The Indian Express)

On February 6, 1958, British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich, West Germany.

In 1968, a decade after the tragedy which cut short United’s dreams of European glory, the team lifted the European Cup, defeating Eusebio’s Benfica in the process. Initially, the club reeled from the sudden loss of many of its players, finishing eighth on the ill-fated season and being stuck in mid-table ignominy at the start of the 1960s. Having made his first-team debut in 1953 at the age of 16, Edwards had already played over 150 games for his club and another 18 games for the England seniors. A part of the plane’s tail was torn off and the left side of the cockpit hit a tree. With a young core of players pegged for greatness in the years to come, Manchester United was already a dominant force in English football, having been crowned champions in the previous two seasons. Among those dead were eight members and three officials of the football team, poised for European domination in the near future.

February 6 is entrenched in Manchester United history as a date to remember those who we lost in 1958 during the Munich Air Disaster.

He made the move to United in 1934 before helping the team to FA Cup glory in 1948, as well as being the trainer of the Great Britain football team that lost out to Yugoslavia in the semi-finals of the Olympics that year. He spent the rest of his life in that position and twice took control of the first team in an interim position in the early years of the 1930s and during the Second World War years. He would play seven more times after the end of the war before his playing career ended in 1947 after sustaining an eye injury. The defensive midfielder made over 100 appearances in a single season, playing for his club, his country and his national service regiment. Chief steward Tom Cable was a well-respected and familiar face with regular passengers including the United team. David Pegg (22) was the first choice outside-left (left-winger in today’s game) for United until months before the disaster. The talented Irishman was the top goalscorer at United with 33 goals in all competitions as they won the title in 1956/57. Bent was sidelined with a broken foot for much of the 1957/58 campaign but travelled to Belgrade as cover for Bryne, whose fitness was a doubt for the game. Tommy Taylor (26) was one of the best goalscorers in Manchester United’s history. He signed for United in 1952 and soon made his debut at 16 years of age – becoming a first-team regular afterwards. The wide midfielder made 85 appearances for the club before his tragic death in 1958, winning two league titles. He earned three league winner’s medals and is remembered as one of the greatest leaders in the history of United.
