Nets Agree to Trade Kevin Durant to Phoenix Suns (The New York Times)

The Nets are set to receive a package of players and first-round picks for Durant, just days after trading away Kyrie Irving.

The deal to trade Durant came a day after the N.B.A. The Nets added Durant and Irving in the summer of 2019, expecting the two of them to lead the franchise to a championship — or maybe several championships with a little luck. The Nets never advanced past the Eastern Conference semifinals during Irving and Durant’s time on the team. The team acquired guard James Harden from the Houston Rockets in January 2021 to create a superteam so talented some wondered if it was the greatest team in N.B.A. In exchange for Durant, the Nets will receive the forwards Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson and Jae Crowder, along with four first-round draft picks and the right to swap another first-round pick. “We had a lot of conversations throughout the year of what our futures were going to look like,” Irving said of Durant.

As he heads to the eighth team in his NBA career, he has averages of 9.6 points and 4.3 rebounds. Warren, 29, played in just 20 games for the Nets after recovering from a foot injury that sidelined him all of last season. Durant, 34, won two NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors, won the NBA Most Valuable Player honor in 2013-14 and is a 13-time All-Star. Irving demanded a trade last week, then was dealt to the Mavericks on Monday, and now Durant is gone, too. When James Harden was acquired in a trade in February 2022, the Nets were viewed as a top contender, but injuries and Irving's various off-court issues scuttled those hopes. The Suns add Durant to an underachieving squad that sits at 30-26, tied for fourth place in the Western Conference.

NBA superstar forward Kevin Durant is headed to the Phoenix Suns in a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, US media reported on Wednesday.

"I love the competition now that we can be in the same conference," Irving said. In addition to the Durant trade, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly poised to trade Russell Westbrook to the Utah Jazz in a three-team deal that will bring Minnesota's D'Angelo Russell to the Lakers, US media reported on Wednesday. I'm going to look at how can we improve our team." On Tuesday, Vaughn told reporters that Durant "had a really good report" in his latest medical evaluation, although the team had offered no timeline on when he would return to the court. Durant -- a two-time NBA champion, two-time Finals MVP and a former NBA regular-season MVP -- had requested a trade in June, less than a year after he inked a four-year, $198 million contract extension with the Nets. The move, on the eve of the NBA's trade deadline on Thursday, follows Brooklyn's trade of Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, after Irving requested a move.

The Phoenix Suns are reportedly sending Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder and five draft picks to Brooklyn Nets for Kevin Durant and TJ Warren.

“He’s a great example for a lot of young guys, our guys and a lot of young guys in the league to one, have the temperament and the patience to play the way he does and develop and let the game come to him,” Casey continued. Durant and Suns guard Damion Lee were teammates in Golden State in the 2018-19 season. “I am incredibly grateful to Grant Hill and Coach Kerr, both for giving me the opportunity to be an assistant coach and for their understanding of my decision.” I want the group in the locker room to want to win. Before playing Tuesday in Brooklyn, Johnson talked about his love for Phoenix, but also addressed the idea of Ishbia making a major move to begin his tenure as team owner. “You wouldn’t have said he’d be able to run pick-and-rolls and start the offense or be a quasi point guard for their team when he first came into the league, but he’s grown into that. Durant, 34, wanted out of Brooklyn last summer as he put Phoenix atop his wish list, but the Nets and Suns were unable to get a deal done. The Suns and Nets finished their home-away series Tuesday as Phoenix won, 116-112, in Brooklyn to complete the regular-season sweep. Durant is currently out with a sprained right MCL and isn’t expected to return to action until after the All-Star break. Crowder has yet to play a game this season with the Suns (30-26) as the two sides “mutually agreed” he wouldn’t attend training camp. He scored 17 points against the Suns in Tuesday’s loss in Brooklyn. The Suns are trading four first round picks, a pick swap, Jae Crowder, Bridges and Johnson for Durant and T.J.

The Phoenix Suns finally got their man after acquiring Kevin Durant from the Brooklyn Nets in a blockbuster trade that completely upends the race to the NBA ...

That's $90M in payroll and tax savings.

Nets generate a $8M trade exception and now have 9 first-round picks over the next 7 drafts. But things have gone so far off the rails in recent years that there has to be a middle ground. Nets decrease their luxury tax payment from $108M at the beginning of the week all the way down to $35.5M by trading Kyrie Irving & Kevin Durant. The Golden State Warriors with Durant don't count because the core of that roster was drafted and developed by the organization before he came on board. This isn't a question of giving players the freedom to play where they want. Their title hopes this year are all but done, but general manager Sean Marks has positioned them well for the future. This isn't a good year in the Western Conference. They got off to a 16-7 start, lost 17 of their next 22 games and have rebounded to go 9-2 in 11 games since Jan. The Timberwolves will get Mike Conley, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and draft picks. Durant's presence will take a lot of pressure off Deandre Ayton and Chris Paul to provide buckets in crunch time. Devin Booker, who missed 21 straight games with a groin injury, returned to the lineup in Tuesday's win over the Nets. [Adrian Wojnarowski](https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1623564676066934785) reported the Suns will get Durant and T.J.

The implosion of the Nets is one of the strangest stories in NBA history. Irving demanded a trade, and the Nets moved quickly to send him to Dallas. Would the Nets have chosen a deal with more future draft compensation (maybe from the Lakers?) if the knew KD would want out, too? The Suns have never won a championship before, and that is now their mission with KD and Booker. Irving wanted a max contract extension with all guaranteed money, the Nets reportedly wanted to protect themselves in case the NBA’s most unreliable superstar missed more games for who knows what reason. The Suns have two superstars in Durant and Booker, one aging Hall of Fame point guard in Chris Paul, and a talented if sometimes underwhelming young center in Deandre Ayton. The Suns have never had a player of Durant’s caliber in franchise history. Durant wasn’t going to have any star teammates left in Brooklyn if he finished out the season there, but he was going to have a deep team full of shooters and defenders around him. The Suns got a new governor in Mat Ishbia while [Durant had been playing at an MVP-level](https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2023/1/1/23524306/nba-mvp-candidates-ranked-nikola-jokic-luka-doncic-kevin-durant) for the Nets at age-34. Now in Phoenix, Durant has the co-star he craves in Devin Booker, but the supporting cast is looking thin. The Suns started this season 19-12, then went on a prolonged losing streak after Booker went out of the lineup on Christmas. Durant reportedly wanted to go to Phoenix last offseason when he requested a trade from the Nets, and now he finally has his wish.

Irving had four rebounds and five assists in 37 minutes of what amounted to a dress rehearsal before Doncic returns to give the Mavs a powerhouse backcourt. Early in the fourth, Irving fouled Paul George. He was part of a 13-0 spurt early in the game, scoring eight points on a jumper and back-to-back 3-pointers. It's the first time I ever got traded in the middle of the season, so it was new for me, but I'm excited that I'm here.' 'It felt good to get this debut out of the way,' Irving said. "We had a lot of conversations throughout the year of what our futures were going to look like," Irving said. They also played in the finals in 1976 and 1993. They jumped to fifth in the Western Conference with a 30-26 record. Suns expecting newly acquired Kevin Durant to provide 'jolt' (ESPN)

Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams said that the addition of Kevin Durant has provided a 'jolt' to the organization.

"We got to get a rhythm, we got to understand how we can play together -- Kevin can play with anybody. I think that's the thing, I get it, it's definitely exciting -- but there's a lot that goes into this stuff, man. Now the Suns will have to build a new part of their family with Durant at the center of everything. "We got a chance to be really good," Williams said. I think we got punched in the face so many times where we've adapted and accepted to where, we've accepted adversity, it helped build confidence to where we've been in situations where a team threw everything at us to stop us even though we didn't have the right pieces on the court ... And KD, he just love to hoop. I think that's what brought me and Book closer together because he just love to hoop. "So you add him to the daggone who is that that the Harlem Globetrotters play against all the time? Where we're at, especially at the start of the season, we lost a few games and we seen what it's like. I think the guys are going to see something that they may not have seen before as far as his approach and how much he just loves to play basketball. "I think if he could hoop every day, 24/7 he would do that and I think that's who we are. Just because of, not just who he is as a player, but his love for the game.

NBA Trade Deadline 2023: Suns Get Durant as Power Shifts to the ... (The New York Times)

No move was bigger than Phoenix Suns' agreement to trade for Kevin Durant. But the Lakers and Mavericks look stronger after deals of their own.

Hours before the Durant trade surfaced, the Lakers agreed to trade Westbrook to the Jazz in a three-team trade that included a package of draft picks and players headlined by Minnesota’s D’Angelo Russell. Then last year, despite setting a franchise regular-season wins record, they ended their season with an embarrassing blowout loss to the Mavericks in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals. He eschewed the lectern, using it only to hold a bottle of water he sipped from during questions. Durant, 34, improves the team immediately, and dramatically. He spent the afternoon at the team’s practice facility strategizing with Jones. But every once in a while Golden State notches a signature win, like its Christmas game, that reminds everyone why this team has won four championships in the past 10 years. It had been difficult to know what to make of the West for much of this season. 20 but have developed a reputation for stumbling in the playoffs. The Warriors have had a confusing season as well. On Christmas, the Grizzlies faced Golden State, then struggling in 11th place. The Dallas Mavericks acquired the disgruntled but dynamic Kyrie Irving from the Nets to pair him with Luka Doncic, the star 23-year-old guard. No team is dominating, not even the Nuggets, who have led the conference since Dec.

Sean Marks speaks to media for first time since trading Kevin Durant ... (NetsDaily)

Sean Marks addressed reporters before the tip-off of Thursday's game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Chicago Bulls. For the first time since trading away ...

We’ve got an incredible opportunity to do something in this borough and that hasn’t left me from the minute I wanted to come here and be a part of something, build something here in Brooklyn,” said Marks. Dinwiddie, in particular, is having an excellent season with 17.7 points on a career-best 45.5% from the field and a career-best 40.5% from three. I think he’s really underrated and I look forward to him just watching him kind of explode here, to be really honest,” said Marks. Fans of the team have not been happy, to put it lightly, with the front office after the conclusion of this era. To have ourselves in the competition for a championship,” Marks said. “If you go back and look at what’s happened to the entire world, I’m not in the business of making excuses, but you look at what we’ve all been through over three years, right? And to be able to bring in guys with this type of character, this type of competitiveness and the versatile nature that all three will bring to this team. When a request like that does come in, it’s just to go back and to have done our due diligence and know whether it’s what the asking price is or where we want to go and also just have good communication with that particular player, with Kyrie.” Irving and Harden got hurt in the 2021 playoffs with a torn hamstring and a sprained ankle, respectively, causing Brooklyn to lose in seven hard-fought games to the eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks in the second round. They come with a lot of thought, a lot of process, a lot of systematic debriefs and discussions that go along with that,” said Marks. My job as a GM and our job as a front office is to try and bring in that caliber of talent and so forth. Durant was moved to Phoenix, his preferred option, in the middle of the night on Thursday.
