At 98 years old, Jimmy Carter has lived longer after leaving the White House than any former president in US history.

Jason Carter, the couple’s grandson who now chairs the Carter Center’s governing board, said on Saturday that he “saw both of my grandparents yesterday. Carter served a single, tumultuous term in office marred by economic woes at home and the Iran hostage crisis that ended just after he left office. “He has the full support of his family and his medical team,” the centre said, adding that the Carter family “asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers”.

What they did in the post-presidency was exactly the same thing they did as president, except the times were different, and he was free of politics. When they established The Carter Center and later worked with Habitat for Humanity one week out of the year, they were still promoting that theme of peace and human rights. But as scholars dig into the documents and learn what really happened, the facts, the truth about what really happened, his reputation as a president has been going up. At 98 years old, Carter is America's oldest living president, and he has spent much of his life in service, work that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. And that prize wasn't earned for his time as president but the philanthropic causes he took up after he left public office. President Biden and a slew of other federal officials offered prayers and words of comfort to former President Jimmy Carter after he chose to go into hospice care.

Jimmy Carter has had long and surprising connections to Canada, including the time he helped save us from a nuclear meltdown.

You were exceptionally gracious for what you said about me and I will try to live up as best I can to your descriptions of the past and your expectations for the future. We then had Joe Clark who was elected to be prime minister in 1979. I made the mistake of saying “What a beautiful granddaughter.” In a very nice way he told me that she was not a granddaughter but his daughter. He served the first two years I was president. When he got to the place where his credentials were examined and the Iranians said, “This is not a good passport because Germans never use initials, in their middle names, they always have all their names spelled out.” And he was a very fast-thinking member of our CIA and he said, “Well, my middle name is Hitler, and I have special permission not to use my name.” And they waved him through! Many years later when I was President of the United States — all the way through 1980 — very few events occurred in my White House experience that were so positively emotional and gratifying. I had radioactive urine for six months and I thought I would never have another child but Amy came later. That is all the time we had. In fact, Art (Milnes) has revealed one of those occasions in his book that has gotten attention by the New York Times, CNN and the Economist magazine that hasn’t been presented very often before and that is when I to Chalk River (Ontario) in 1953. The Lasting Legacy Of Jimmy Carter, The Cold War-Era US ... (Outlook India)

Former US President Jimmy Carter has decided to enter hospice care at the age of 98 instead of further medical interventions. He served as the President ...

He declared a “Carter doctrine”, which said that the Soviets’ attempt to gain control of Afghanistan, and possibly the region, was regarded as a threat to US interests. Carter not only promoted a boycott, but he also embargoed US technology and other goods needed to produce the Olympics. In 1980, Carter pushed further to punish the Soviets. And Carter was prepared to meet the threat with “military force”. Beginning in July 1979, the US was providing advice and non-lethal supplies to the mujahideen rebelling against the Soviet-backed regime. But by 1985, there was a meat shortage in the USSR. The country’s unfavourable weather and climate contributed to successive poor growing seasons, and their heavy industrial development left the agricultural sector underfunded. So the CIA and US allies delivered weapons to the mujahideen, a programme later expanded under Reagan. The CIA flooded the USSR with books and articles to incite human rights activism. The invasion effectively ended an existing détente between the US and USSR. Carter’s grain embargo, although ended by Reagan in 1981, had a lasting impact on livestock feed that resulted in Russian farmers decreasing livestock production. With the counsel of National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, a Soviet expert, Carter exploited these weaknesses.

Jimmy Carter Is Our Greatest Former President (The Nation)

Carter taught us how to live a life for others, and, as he approaches his end, he is teaching us how to die with grace.

He expressed his frustration that he hadn’t been able to do more to secure Palestinian rights and noted the pushback he received both domestically and in Israel for his efforts. He also took time to single out for commendation the leader of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed, for his role in building his country and for providing extraordinary assistance to many important health care projects across Africa. He was offended by and apologized about the former, and about the latter he said, “That was you! And I found that I was absolutely and completely at ease with death.” After he lost his reelection bid, in 1980, I wrote Carter a note expressing my disappointment at his defeat and thanking him for his efforts, though incomplete, to achieve a comprehensive Middle East peace. My wife and I, however, were invited to the White House lawn in 1979 to greet Pope John Paul II on his visit to Washington. The public took note of the fact that he carried his own suitcase, engaged in honest, humble, and direct conversations with voters on the campaign trail, and was never shy about acknowledging his Christian faith, though not in a pompous, holier-than-thou manner. Three days after the meeting, I received a tearful call from a White House staffer telling me that I wouldn’t be invited to the follow-up meeting. Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, were a breath of fresh air in the White House. During its initial two decades, owing in large measure to Carter’s sponsorship, Habitat became a household name in communities across the US, building over 100,000 low-cost homes for over half a million people in the US and in 60 countries around the world. Using those metrics, I judge Jimmy Carter, far and away, to be the greatest former president of the United States. Historians debate their contributions, reporters examine their records, and the public weighs in with their memories.

… Both Rosalynn and Jimmy are accessible and gracious, and people feel like they really got to know him," said Taylor, which is why she believes the news of his deteriorating health is that much harder for many to accept. "I think his accessibility has created a bond with a lot of Americans that most presidents don't have. He is preparing to die in the town of 660 people in which he was born. Carter's popularity was also boosted in the decades after he left the White House by traveling the country autographing and promoting the dozens of books he wrote. "I have to admit that I cried at breakfast," she told VOA during a Skype interview. He was the first American president ever born in the hospital, but he doesn't want to die in the hospital.

Opinion | Jimmy Carter's Presidency Was Not What You Think (The New York Times)

Jimmy Carter was probably the most intelligent, hard-working and decent man to have occupied the Oval Office in the 20th century.

In or out of the White House, Mr. The majority of the country rejected him as a president way ahead of his time: too much of a Georgian Yankee for the New South and too much of an outlier populist for the North. In 1976, while he won the electoral votes of the South and the union, Jewish and Black popular votes, by 1980, the only large margin Mr. He was intent on doing the right thing and right away. “We can develop a place to help people who want to resolve disputes.” This was the beginning of the Carter Center, an institution devoted to conflict resolution, public health initiatives and election monitoring around the world. In the aftermath of the Iranian revolution, Mr. If this is true, such interference in the hostage negotiations sought to deny the Carter administration an October surprise, a release of the hostages late in the campaign, and it was dirty politics and a raw deal for the American hostages. He was not afraid to warn everyone that Israel was taking a wrong turn on the road to apartheid. And yet, as someone who had grown up barefoot in the red soil of Archery, a tiny hamlet in South Georgia, he was steeped in a culture that had known defeat and occupation. He was a progressive on the issue of race, declaring in his first address as Georgia’s governor, in 1971, that “the time for racial discrimination is over,” to the extreme discomfort of many Americans, including his fellow Southerners. A post-Watergate, post-Vietnam War era of disillusionment with the notion of American exceptionalism was the perfect window of opportunity for a man who ran his campaign largely on the issue of born-again religiosity and personal integrity. But he was clearly more interested in the Guinea worms.

"Hospice care is really focused highly on the comfort of that patient," Brownstein said. "At the end of the day, it's about patient-centered decisions and their wishes and in this particular case, I'm sure there's been a lot of consultation with medical teams, and family." "Hospice care at home relies primarily on the family or personally paid caregivers to provide that day-to-day care," he said. "Clearly, the recognition is that Jimmy Carter lived an incredible life; we should all be so lucky to live a life that is so full, rich and rewarding," said Dr. "This is not intended to speed up the dying process or reduce their time that they may have," he said. "He has the full support of his family and his medical team.

President Carter is on hospice care, but what is it? Our medical ... (CNN)

Both hospice and palliative care are important specialty medical services that are underutilized, and can offer much support and comfort to many more ...

A primary aim of hospice care is to manage the patient’s symptoms so that the patient’s last days can be spent with their loved ones, with dignity and the highest quality possible. Leana Wen: Hospice care is a type of specialty medical care for people near the end of their lives that focuses on maximizing comfort for the patient and support for the patient and their family. Over time, if it becomes apparent that the patient is likely to die within six months, palliative care can transition over to hospice care. But differently from hospice care, the patient doesn’t have to forgo curative treatment – palliative care can be provided together with curative treatment. When there is limited time left to live, that patient may wish to minimize suffering and to prioritize spending the remaining time with their loved ones. They and their families can also choose to leave hospice at any point and resume, say, active treatment for their cancer. Actually, hospice care is a specific type of compassionate medical care for patients in the last stages of incurable disease to live as fully and comfortably as they can. That includes reducing physical pain and tending to the psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient and the family. Many patients opt to receive hospice care in their homes, where they can be in familiar surroundings. There can be benefits and blessings for the person receiving the care and their loved ones, but there are also some common misconceptions about what it involves. Leana Wen and I thought that many people might be unfamiliar with hospice care beyond a vague understanding that some people receive it toward the end of life. “He has the full support of his family and his medical team.”
