Champions Chelsea too strong for Albion (Brighton & Hove Albion)

Carter comes off the bench to score her fifth of the season but Albion go down 3-1.

She was stranded five minutes later though when Terland hit an instinctive volley from the right-hand edge of the box which unluckily clattered back off the crossbar with Musovic stranded. Jess Carter was free at the back post from the resultant corner only to volley wide, but Albion did go behind in the 11th minute when Zoe Morse brought down Sam Kerr in the box. Albion struggled to get out of their own half in the opening quarter.

The striker waited for the keeper to come out and then nudged the ball to her right, where Rytting Kaneryd was waiting to finish into the empty net. She rolled the ball into the path of Cankovic, who wrong-footed the keeper by scooping a chipped finish to the near post, only to see it come back off the crossbar. It was all the Seagulls could manage to try and defend their penalty area and clear their lines, although even that was proving a struggle. The Norwegian then dropped a shoulder and side-stepped a defender before attempting to curl a shot into the bottom corner, but a deflection prevented a brilliant goal. Mjelde picked up the ball outside the box and, after feeding it forward to Reiten, continued her run into the box to receive a clever return pass. [Guro Reiten](/en/teams/profile/guro-reiten), who was excellent throughout, made no mistake by slotting the spot-kick calmly into the bottom corner to set us on our way.

Chelsea deliver right reaction against Brighton after League Cup ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Brighton & Hove Albion are brushed aside by Chelsea with goals from Guro Reiten, Jess Carter and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.

"I have to place on record how very proud I am of [defender] Lotte Wubben-Moy to have that foresight, I think along with [captain] Leah Williamson, to push the government. [We] donโ€™t know what that impact will be but itโ€™s definitely in the right direction.โ€ But blowout losses have put them in the danger zone, with former assistant Amy Merricks the latest to take interim charge. They will have to battle to stay up - currently at 11th, just two points above the relegation zone. Chelsea have picked apart most opponents this campaign, their loss to Arsenal a few days ago was only their second in all competitions. But the first real reaction she got on Wednesday night was from referee Abigail Byrne.
