Saudi Arabia's Personal Status Law (PSL), passed one year ago today on 8 March 2022 and touted as a major reform by the authorities, perpetuates the male ...
Women who face challenges in relation to marriage, divorce and child custody under the PSL are unable to speak freely about their concerns for fear of repression by the authorities. Such provisions, which create additional barriers to ending a marriage, prioritize the reconciliation of the family over the woman’s safety. According to the PSL, only men have the unconditional right to initiate a divorce. Although the law sets the legal age for marriage at 18, it allows the courts to permit marriages for boys and girls aged under 18 in certain cases. Prior to the introduction of a codified Personal Status Law, matters related to family life were subject to the judges’ discretionary application of Islamic law. They must also ensure that women have equal rights and responsibilities with regards to marriage, divorce, custody and guardianship over their children, and inheritance.”

So I think people are becoming more sensitive to that, but again, certainly, when it comes to films, that’s just scratching the surface and we need to do more of it. And we said we don’t want to do the hotel thing, so let’s do Airbnb. There are certain issues with gender parity, and women are still not in terms of their roles on screen, you have some strong women, but on the whole, you’re still playing accessories to a man. So violence against women, not only outside but in their homes, which has come to the front during things like the lockdown, these are issues that women are still dealing with. 48 percent of the population exists, and we’re out there, but are we being represented in the way that we want to be? I applaud Airbnb’s efforts in helping women in the hospitality industry embrace equity and take on roles that truly make them happy, whilst working towards an independent future.”

According to prosecutors, Tawil had for weeks been planning to attack a Jewish woman. At that point Tawil allegedly dragged the woman into a cubicle and locked the door, preventing her from leaving. Security film showed that during that time, people walked right past the restroom, apparently unaware of what was going on just a few meters away. CCTV footage appeared to show that the cubicle was a larger one intended for disabled people. The woman had gone to donate blood nearby and afterward, at around 2 p.m., visited the park’s restroom. Mahmoud Tawil, a resident of East Jerusalem in his twenties, was indicted on charges of rape and false imprisonment.
