Jennifer Justice has been negotiating women's salaries for decades. Excuses companies give for offering less include "their husbands made a lot of money."
A lot of the old power players are still running major companies and using the same sexist tactics to slow the closing of the pay gap. "You literally hear it and you're like, 'Oh, I know every word,'" she says. Lawyers assumed female clients were "only [doing their jobs] to find a husband," she says. He claimed the client hadn't really signed the artist and, even if she did, she couldn't have done it alone. She once represented a woman responsible for finding artists for record labels or music publishers. They're a little aggressive,'" she recounts. But because in some cases both Justice's client and her husband worked, "it was fine for her not to make as much." She often heard counsels downplay her female clients' accomplishments as a negotiating tactic. "'They're a little bossy. It was assumed, by contrast, that single men would one day need to support their families. During that time, she was often hired to negotiate salaries. Justice is a longtime entertainment lawyer and spent decades representing an array of clients ranging from male and female executives to talent like rapper Jay-Z.
After taking into account taxes and inflation, it shrinks to an annual income of only $35791, new study finds.
A $100,000 salary is worth $84,498 in Oklahoma City after adjusting for the cost of living, it said. Oklahoma City has the lowest cost of living at only 83.2 per cent of the national average, the lowest out of all 76 cities in the SmartAsset study. The city of El Paso, in west Texas, was ranked second in the list, with a salary of $100,000 translating into an annual take-home pay of $84,966, followed by Corpus Christi at $83,443 and Lubbock, where the cost of living is just 89.4 per cent of the national average, on $83,350, SmartAsset said. “After deducting taxes and adjusting for the cost of living, a $100,000 salary on average is worth $77,885 across the 10 Texas cities that we analysed in our study.” Meanwhile, an annual salary of $100,000 goes furthest in Memphis, Tennessee, where it is worth $86,444 after subtracting taxes and adjusting for the cost of living, SmartAsset said. “But to really break it down city by city reveals some of the quirks in what a difference where you live makes — and how the tax landscape of where you live really impacts what a six-figure salary feels like.”
While a six-figure income has long been seen as a marker of success, in some cities it barely covers the cost of living.
But Memphis' low cost of living makes that equivalent to take-home pay of $86,400 elsewhere around the U.S. But with the ever-rising cost of living, $100,000 doesn't offer much by way of financial security in a number of big U.S. Memphis, Tennessee, where a six-figure earner would have the equivalent of $86,000 left after taxes.
