In 2019 alone, Florida missed out on nearly half a billion in consumer spending as a direct result of debt-based license suspensions. Today, 1 in every 24 adults in Florida are unable to legally drive in a state where 90% rely on cars to get to work. What this does is trap hundreds of thousands of families in a cycle of poverty. If a person can’t keep their job or get to work, they cannot pay off their outstanding fees. A minor infraction can lead to thousands of dollars in debt as collection charges pile up. As far as we’ve come, there is still work to be done and I don’t want to see us jeopardize our progress by insisting on an outdated practice that traps families in poverty and hinders our economic growth.

Just winging it proved a bad strategy for Modesto consultant Mike Lynch in his driver license renewal test at the Turlock DMV.

I filled out the personal info when I signed in, and when I took the three tests. I got my spot standing before the computer and began the test. I stood at the computer for my knowledge test. Who goes first when a pedestrian, a motorcyclist, a bicycle rider, a kid on a scooter or powered skateboard and your car all arrive at the same time at the intersection? I made the appointment at the DMV office in Turlock. It’s a how-to booklet on how to be a responsible driver, and thereby pass the test to get the license.
