Ciaran Coll's late finish preserves Derry City's unbeaten start (Irish Examiner)

Derry were ultimately held to a 1-1 draw by Sligo Rovers at the Ryan McBride Brandywell on Friday.

Controlling the game after their goal, John Russell's side lost the services of right full-back, Johan Brannefalk due to injury. And it was a superb goal, albeit against the run of play. Derry's Ciaran Coll netted the vital equaliser for City as both sides will certainly welcome the international break due to a spate of injury worries.

Home frustration for Derry City as fightback needed to rescue derby ... (Independent.ie)

If their first derby of the season was a test of Derry City's credentials as potential title winners, they failed to convince.

Derry responded to the concession of the goal with long spells of possession but little penetration. Sligo had spent the opening stages soaking up Derry pressure, but with their first attack, they took the lead. Aware before kick-off that champions Shamrock Rovers had, again, dropped points, Derry saw this game as a chance to press their advantage.

Late Coll equaliser earns Derry City a share of the spoils (The Irish News)

DERRY City had to come from behind to secure a deserved point against a well-organised Sligo Rovers side.

Derry were inches away from levelling things on 70 minutes as Graydon's left wing centre found Ronan Boyce, but the right-back's close range header, which had Luke McNicholas beaten, skipped the top of the net. Derry thought they had taken a tenth minute lead as Jamie McGonigle had fired home his second goal of the season, but incredibly, referee Adriano Reale, had blown his whistle for an earlier incident and awarded Derry a free-kick some 25 yards from goal, much to the annoyance of the home side. Derry showed their intent in the opening couple of minutes with Ryan Graydon inches away from Ben Doherty's cross and Jamie McGonigle firing over from close range.

Reece Hutchinson found himself in enough space on the left wing to send a cross deep into the City area, and it was perfect for Max Mata who arrived at the back post to head past Brian Maher for his fifth goal of the season. There was real controversy just 10 minutes in when Jamie McGonigle scored what seemed to be the opening goal, only for referee Adriano Reale to pull the play back for a Derry City free kick rather than giving the striker the advantage. The official was surrounded by furious Derry City players with the home side denied what looked like a perfectly good goal.

Ruaidhri Higgins hoping Derry City's injury misfortune subsides (Belfast Telegraph)

Ruaidhri Higgins is hoping that Derry City's casualty list don't grow any longer in tonight's game with Sligo Rovers at the Brandywell.

“It’s a real blow of course given his quality and his leadership abilities, but you seen how we adapted the other night. “They have a strong squad which can pose different threats but we want to be ready for that and go and impose ourselves on them and try and win the game.” “I’ll not put a time on it because we need a wee bit more information.

Coll salvages late draw for Derry as Sligo rue missed chances (Irish Mirror)

CIARAN COLL salvaged a draw for Derry City on a night when Sligo Rovers should have claimed all three points at the Ryan McBride Brandywell.

From Rovers’ point of view, however, it was a wonderful team goal. And while Mata got the credit for his fifth goal of the season, a huge chunk of credit was due to Fabrice Hartmann. His first call since 2019 comes on the back of his form with the Showgrounds side - and he will have the company of his club and country teammate Nando Pijnaker on the long flight home. Their frustration was compounded by the concession of a goal in the 25th minute. The resulting free-kick came to nothing, much to the annoyance of the home contingent at the Ryan McBride Brandywell. Ben Doherty’s cross was begging to be converted, but Ryan Graydon at the back post just couldn’t get his head to the ball with the goal at his mercy.
