Match report | Lewes 1 United Women 3 (Manchester United)

Manchester United Women are into the semi-finals of the Vitality Women's FA Cup for the very first time after beating Lewes 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

A deflected pass out from the back by Earps dropped to Kraft, who lifted the ball over our shot-stopper to set up a grandstand finish. Second-half substitute Parris also had a big opportunity to finish the tie, after showing initial strength to hold off the opposing defender, but her eventual shot went wide of the mark. Toone showed patience before picking out Batlle, who lifted the ball into the direction of our no.8 with her bullet header flying beyond Whitehouse. Just two minutes into the restart, Martha Thomas was on the end of two brilliant opportunities to double our lead. Hayley Ladd received the nod from Skinner to continue in her place. Just a few minutes later, the Reds responded by going a goal in front at The Dripping Pan.

Hooked at the break. Le Tissier and Turner were both assured of themselves, despite conceding. But those supporters were on their feet again when Emily Kraft pulled one back with under 20 minutes left to play. Batlle's bouncing ball through the box was half-volleyed towards goal by Martha Thomas, with Whitehouse getting down low to deny her. Ona Batlle put in a cross from deep as she made her way down the right, with Alessia Russo's deft flick deflecting off of Rhian Cleverly and rolling past Sophie Whitehouse at the near post. Lewes went ever so close to taking a shock lead with just six minutes on the clock.

Late goals from Vilde Bøe Risa and Nikita Parris ensured Manchester United progress to the FA Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Lewes.

It took United until the 68th minute to double their lead. I don’t think it will be long before we get to equity and equality, but we’ve still got a way to go.” The Lewes captain fell to the floor clutching her face in frustration. Visiting the Pan is a unique experience, with hospitality beach huts overlooking the pitch, banked grass between the stands of the sunken pitch and, more significantly, progressive signage to match the progressive values of the fan-owned club. Manchester United fought hard and finally earned progress to the FA Cup semi-finals, securing a win in East Sussex. “That was the plan, to make it tough,” Booth said.

The forwards' goals have been a feature of this cup run and she'll be desperate to start in the semi-final. The full-time whistle ensured United are the first team in the hat for Tuesday's draw. The hosts just about deserved their moment for the performance, even if they had failed to unsettle United regularly. Despite suffering a scare thanks to Kraft's superb goal, United did eventually restore their two-goal lead. This led to United surviving a tough afternoon at Sunderland in round four, with the Championship side giving them a major scare before going down 2-1. Earps' clearance was deflected and the ball ran to Emily Kraft, who produced a superb curling strike that flew over the England No.1. It was unfair on Naalsund, who had shown some promising touches in the early minutes. Earps has been outstanding this season, but this rare lapse in concentration gave Lewes a sniff that the tie was very much alive. It was a disjointed, at times scrappy affair, with Lewes failing to consistently work Mary Earps, but staying in the fight with a resolute defensive display. It was a goal United probably deserved for their improved second-half display. Sophie Whitehouse could have done better, positioning herself in the middle rather than covering her near post, but Russo's finish was one of WSL class. An early own goal from Rhian Cleverly, initially credited to Alessia Russo, gave them a perfect start with Vilde Boe Risa's header doubling their lead.
