KBRA Releases Research – State Vaping Taxes: Collections Not as ... (Business Wire)

KBRA releases research examining the trends in U.S. state vaping tax collections, as well as the measures these states have taken to cash in on the gr.

This KBRA report provides an overview of the e-cigarette/vape market, examines different forms of taxation by state, and assesses the limitations of these taxes in bolstering state budgets, as well as the possibility for future federal regulation. state vaping tax collections, as well as the measures these states have taken to cash in on the growing popularity of the e-cigarette market. Despite high expectations, the total tax revenue from these products remains small relative to tobacco taxes—and even smaller as a percentage of budget. KBRA’s ratings can be used by investors for regulatory capital purposes in multiple jurisdictions. Capitalizing on this trend, many states and local governments have implemented taxes on these tobacco alternatives. E-cigarette and vape devices have continued to gain popularity in recent years, largely due to health concerns around traditional cigarettes, smoking cessation initiatives, and rising youth consumption.

Banning all imports outside a prescription is a move also supported by the chair of the Cancer Council’s public health committee, Anita Dessaix. Those who support vaping argue the proposed importation reforms will lead to an increase in the black market. The working group will focus on “addressing the increasing availability, appeal, “Australian governments need to act now to enforce existing laws and clamp down on illegal non-prescription sale of e-cigarettes, as well as strengthen controls on the importation of all – nicotine and non-nicotine – vaping products,” Robson said. Butler said that at a meeting with his state and territory counterparts on 24 February, health ministers had agreed to establish a national “e-cigarette working group” to review and advise on any measures implemented as a result of the TGA review.

"And if you want to police this, the best way to police this is to simplify the regulations to align it with other regulations like cigarettes, around point of sale, around packaging, flavours, and making sure that it's only people over 18 that can can acquire these things." The changes the Nationals are proposing would mark a firm change in direction from Australia's current approach to vaping. Companies like British American Tobacco, which is a major producer of e-cigarettes, have similarly pushed to regulate nicotine vapes like cigarettes, arguing that is the best way to tackle the black market. The party has adopted a formal position at odds with the current health approach in Australia, which only allows access to nicotine vapes with a prescription. The approach bears similarities to that taken in New Zealand, where nicotine vapes are far more widely available legally than in Australia. The Nationals want to ease rules around nicotine vapes in Australia, to provide access to them as a tool to help adults quit smoking, while tightening rules around young people accessing the highly addictive products.

Can you vape during Ramadan? Does vaping count as breaking ... (Liverpool Echo)

Ramadan 2023 begins this week, but are you allowed to vape while you're fasting?

They argue that ingesting the nicotine is technically similar to eating, and so smoking counts as breaking your fast. The topic of smoking cigarettes or tobacco products during Ramadan has well been documented and discussed throughout the years. Some claim it has fewer health risks compared to cigarettes, but the long-term impacts on your body are still unknown as it's such a new product. During Ramadan, Muslims must fast between sunrise and sunset, but also avoid things like sex during fasting hours, swearing, lying, cheating, unnecessary fighting and much more. With that in mind, there is some debate over whether you can vape, or even smoke, while fasting. Most agree that even though smoking is not mentioned in the Quran, it is haram because of the harmful effects it has on your body, because harming yourself or others during Ramadan is haram.

Vaping Regulatory Authority cuts staff as nicotine level confusion ... (1 News)

Hundreds of vaping products were taken off shelves following a Fair Go investigation last year – but some high nicotine vapes are still being sold.

However, this change in approach cannot be achieved overnight,” Burgess told Fair Go. Countdown’s spokesperson says it has not received a “correction” from BAT New Zealand around the sale of the 4% Vuse pod, which it understands is “still on the notified products register and approved for sale”. It asked BAT to issue a correction. The VRA has refused to confirm to Fair Go whether the Vuse and Alt 4% pods are legal for sale. Alt NZ says a technical advisory group recommended allowing an even higher limit for nicotine when regulations were drafted and that its 4% pods are compliant and based on “the Government’s position that smokers should be supported to switch to vaping as it is 'substantially less harmful' than smoking,” according to Ben Pryor, a director of Alt NZ. BAT, Alt and eight other vaping companies fought back, insisting that the Vaping Regulatory Authority had got it wrong – that they had successfully registered or “notified” the products to the VRA and that the regulations allowed vapes at that high strength.

Nationals' 'dangerous' vape plan savaged (NEWS.com.au)

“I was told of a story by a parent earlier this week of discovering a vape in their child’s pencil case that was made to look like a highlighter pen so they could take it to school. E-cigarette money was used to set up the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association.” Well, I could run the ruler down the corporate donors to Labor and actually go well, any decision they make or policy decision they make is compromised. It is available in supermarkets, convenience stores, petrol stations, bars, pubs, clubs, and more. “It’s becoming increasingly clear just how big a public health menace vaping is in this country to the general community, but particularly to our children and adolescents,” he said. “The World Health Organisation has a list of all the different tactics that the tobacco industry uses to further their own interests,” she told news.com.au. Last year, the tobacco company donated $55,000 to the Nationals and $55,000 to the Liberal Democrats, a group that has consistently championed vaping as “the safer alternative to smoking”. This is exactly the model that will make the vaping problem worse, so it is the opposite of the solution we need. “It is dangerous and is guaranteed to commit today’s children and future generations of Australians to lifelong nicotine addiction,” he said. “And we look to look at the flavours that are offered, the packaging and even making sure that we don’t get carried away with the excise and that excise we can put into regional health and making sure that we invest that back into regional health programs. But the push has raised new questions about the Nationals embrace of political donations from tobacco companies and the tactics being used to push for a relaxation of vaping laws. Nicotine vapes could be on sale to adults at supermarkets across the country under a Nationals plan to “protect children” that’s been slammed by experts as “dangerous”.
