A lot of anger but no trophies – how Antonio Conte's Spurs reign ... (The Guardian)

Tottenham fans do not expect silverware but they do demand progress, excitement and unity. This is where Antonio Conte failed.

The Italian would live his usual downside – the acrimony, the fraying of relationships – and, in the end, it was the negatives that were the greater takeaway. It was a calculated move to get more out of the players; with Conte, it always is. [loss of three good friends](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jan/06/antonio-conte-mourns-another-friend-with-death-of-gianluca-vialli) – the Spurs fitness coach, Gian Piero Ventrone, then Sinisa Mihajlovic and Gianluca Vialli – which saw him question his work-life balance, especially the distance to his wife and daughter in Italy. [he could walk out if he did not get what he wanted](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/feb/17/antonio-conte-fears-tottenham-squad-weaker-after-january-transfers) in the January 2022 window. Conte wants finished article additions, experienced players to make an immediate impact and that also explains his indifference towards the academy, where morale was on the floor. At first, it was possible to detect a quasi-religious zeal among the players. This was the basis of the needed mentality. And that has not been the case with other managers of the Levy era. He offered the impression that he understood two kinds of love. The angst and impatience within the fanbase over the lack of trophies that affects the players? Or the players’ inability to cope with the pressure and win trophies that fires the angst and impatience? There came to be an unhealthy amount of reputation future-proofing from Conte, an inversion of the old break-up line.

Mauricio Pochettino is the clear choice of supporters and interested in returning to the club where he spent five-and-a-half exhilarating seasons. As a proponent of tiki-taka, his sides like to get on the ball and he is a huge supporter of youth, both of which would suit Spurs. Luis Enrique is out of work after he was sacked following the World Cup, and the former Spain boss is thought to be open to a job in England. He is a charismatic and forceful character, who should be able to quickly win over the dressing room. Thomas Work has worked wonders at Brentford, establishing the Bees in the Premier League and mounting an unlikely push for Europe with an exciting brand of football. What team is left for them to take over, however, is a big question given the precarious nature of their push for next season’s Champions League.

And will they arrive before the season ends or will Levy wait until the close season? And with the international break upon us, it was ideal timing for chairman Daniel Levy to wield the axe.

Tottenham news: Former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino continues to be linked with a return to N17 following Antonio Conte's exit from the club on Sunday ...

Pochettino being out of the country perhaps indicates Levy hasn't spoken to his former employee about a possible return, but the Argentine is understood to be on his way back from his break in Tokyo. He is also said to prefer someone like Paulo Fonseca, who Spurs were heavily linked to before the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo, over Pochettino. With all of that being said, football.london has taken a look at the latest news and updates linking the 51-year-old with a return to Spurs. Managing Director Fabio Paratici will also likely be involved in the decision-making process, but Levy will probably have the final say. “I still feel that it's my club, my place,” he said. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future. "We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the Club. "We all need to pull together. He averaged 1.88 points per game in the Premier League with Spurs, the second-highest figure for any manager of the club with a minimum of 38 games in charge. The 53-year-old's contract was set to expire at the end of the season and he had remained coy over the prospect of extending his stay in north London. "We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place," Levy said in a club statement issued late on Sunday. With the club out of all cup competitions, at least Stellini can afford to put all of his eggs in one basket. But Sunday's divorce by "mutual agreement", with just 10 Premier League games remaining, is a gamble by the Spurs hierarchy, who are desperate to secure a place in the lucrative Champions League next season.

Sky Sports Jamie Redknapp discusses the situation at Spurs in the wake of Antonio Contes exit; the Italian departed on Sunday night after publicly ...

The culture at the club doesn’t seem to be right in terms of being a winning mentality. I wouldn’t really call them signings that are going to change the culture of the club or go and win that trophy that you need. His negotiators will be talking to clubs and clubs will know the situation. All the managers must think: ‘This is a great laugh coming to Tottenham’. Every year you’re getting a new manager in and he’s probably thinking: ‘What’s the point of this?’ You need some continuity - that’s conducive to success. You’re not really in a strong position to negotiate if you’re Tottenham. If they want to really achieve it will probably be with the next owners. It’s very much controlled by Daniel Levy - he wants to make all the decisions and I think that’s always been a major problem with Tottenham. It was a completely different culture to what I’d been at with Liverpool. He can’t be speaking about the players because those players haven’t really been there that long - you can’t really blame them. If Tottenham are ever really going to achieve then that has to change. I think this is really good news for the clubs around them.
